Introduction This Spring 2017 semester, I get to do student teaching at Jack and Sharon Rhoads Elementary. Rhoads is a public elementary school in Kay, TX, in the Katy Independent School District. There are 1,128 students enrolled in grades PK to 5th. It is the 43rd largest public school in Texas. In 1st grade, there are about 150 students. The 1st grade classroom that I am observing has an average of 20 students and is very diverse because it supports a large variety group of children. There are students that are learning in different ways such as at an advanced level, an average level, and some that would need in-class support. In Mrs. Gwen 1st grade class, she teaches her class many subjects. The teacher have lesson plans made in subject

In the particular classroom that I observe, the teacher does a good job of meeting the diverse needs of the students. Lesson by lesson, she alternates from doing hands on activities to verbally giving children the information. This allows for students with auditory strengths along with those students possessing visual strengths to get a chance to make sense of the material. She goes out of her way to make sure that every child's way of learning is being accounted for in one way or another. She will not move on to a new lesson until she alters her instruction enough times so that every child understands. This is very important in a kindergarten classroom when children are at such a young age. If we don't provide differentiated instruction, those students whose way of learning is not being accounted for may become frustrated and give up. We can not afford for children to feel this frustration at such a young level in their education.…

With small class sizes a teacher can have one-on-one time to get to know the students better, learn what the child can do academically, assess how a student interacts socially with other students, and determine how the students learn best. When a teacher is able to spend more time with a student they can identify the student’s strengths as well as their weaknesses. This type of learning environment is only possible with a small classroom size. Teachers with smaller class sizes are capable of giving students more individual attention that helps these students to better succeed in school. When a teacher can establish this type relationship with a student they can design an educational plan that is beneficial to all students. This is not possible in a large, crowded classroom because the larger classroom is often affected by discipline problems that consume much of the teacher’s time.…

Picture a classroom full of interactive activities, decorations, and young minds having fun while working with a partner on the whiteboard. Picture a first grade classroom with a teacher who is greeting her students at the door every single morning.
