Shark Vacuum Experience
"Many will travel to hear you speak". I saw this on a fortune cookie from Panda Express, during a time in my life when I was unsure of what I wanted to be and what my talents were. I always had a passion for public speaking, but this seemed out of reach especially since most of my family members never favored professions that were outside the medical field. But I knew that I had another life to lead.
Growing up without my parents watching over me, I had to learn things on my own. I recall using books to fill in the gap; this established a solid vocabulary. The books that I read were not intended for my age group, I just read for fun! This knowledge that I grasped from books translated into my everyday vernacular. Even my teachers took notice of my elevated vocabulary and would refer me to even more books to read. Books allowed me to convert my thoughts into words, they helped me get through life, and taught me the importance of words.
Words; the most powerful weapon. People often go about speaking words

One of my chores as a kid was to vacuum the entire house. Our vacuum was old and heavy, and I thought it was about time for new one. In order to change the situation for the better, I watched Shark Vacuum Infomercials every Saturday (staying up late at night) in order to convince my parents to buy a new vacuum cleaner. I had to watch these boring infomercials for weeks until I was able to get my parents on board. And it didn't help that I wasn't only allowed to watch T.V. Monday through Friday, but this was a sacrifice I had to make. Using my words wisely I often had to reiterate that the price of a Shark Vacuum was three easy payments of $39.95 plus shipping and handling. Due to my persistence, my parents purchased the Shark Vacuum and chores didn't seem like a chore anymore. But I also took note how words can comfort someone during a

Dr. Russell Conwell’s “Aces of Diamonds” speech was very impactful. A man with a fortune right in front of him, and failed to realize it. Conwell's message is that we should acknowledge that fortune can be anywhere. His tale of his struggle and success. Fame, Focus, and Fortune are the key to this journey. Reading is so important because it can expand your vocabulary. A study released earlier this month suggests that enjoying literature might help strengthen your “mind-reading” abilities. Another piece of evidence is, Even if it’s been decades since you had to worry about the SATs, you can still use books to expand your mental dictionary. In fact, researchers estimate that we learn five to 15 percent of all the words we know through reading. These examples show how reading every day can really help you to grow your vocabulary. In all, reading everyday can really help you expand your vocabulary.…

A lot of books I can remember reading made my childhood so great. Growing up as a child, going to the library was one of my most favorite hobbies to do. My mother would always take me there and she would read to me anything from Junie B. Jones to Arthur books, Dr. Seuss, Charlottes’ Web. Dr. Seuss was one of my most favorites. Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham will always be a childhood favorite. At the library, my mother would read word by word very slowly to make sure I’d understand what she was reading. Age 3-5, I would take part in a summer program at the library that involves reading. The volunteers who were…

Although there is much I can’t recall from my early days of reading, there are some momentous flashbacks. When I was beginning elementary school my parents were very eager to introduce me to doing a great deal of reading, they wanted me to enjoy reading for a while and they succeeded. We lived within walking distance of the public library which allowed us to frequently visit the library to read and check out books. I always remembered the vast shelves of books that seemed like they never had an end. In addition to reading at the library we checked books out to bring home to read, this allowed me to read as much as I wanted to. Correspondent to the amount of reading I did, the more I enjoyed it and improved at reading.…

Literacy was not something that I grew up seeing at home. Both of my parents, neither read nor wrote, but, one thing that I can recall was that my mother would sing nursery rhymes in Spanish and would even teach me the hand gestures that went along with the song. For example las vocales ( the vowels), la Escuelita (the school) and so on. Even though both of my parents were not active readers, they always told me the importance of higher education.…

Although I don’t remember exactly how I learned to read, I guess it sort of came to me as a little child when my parents used to read me prayers and stories from the Bible. In middle school, reading was essential in getting a good grade for English with the "Accelerated Reader" system being implemented at our school. Basically, it was a online program where you would be able to take tests on books once you have read them, and each book had a certain amount of points based on its difficulty and length. Every semester, you needed to have a certain amount of points in order to get an A in English, and I always made sure too reach the point goal every year. My parents are the main reason of my success, and I will be forever thankful for the books they made me read and also for my success of…

My literacy journey has been going full speed since I was able to comprehend the words that my parents spoke to me. Growing up I was a swift learner, so the concepts of reading, writing, and spelling came quick to me. My perfectionist tendencies assisted me in my motivation to learn to words, how to spell them, and how to use them. My parents took notice of my accelerated learning ability, so they pushed it fully. Going to the library was a fun activity that usually occurred once or twice a week, where I was encouraged to explore all of the books and figure out what I liked the most. They would challenge me by assisting me in figuring out things on my own, instead of babying me through everything that I found confusing.…

At a very young age, I found my love for reading. I learned to read at age three, and I read to myself nightly ever since I went into preschool. My reading level progressed very quickly. I loved the feeling of being able to finish a challenging book on my own at that age. Going into preschool, I can remember being one of the only kids who could read, so clearly, I felt like I should show off my skills to the other preschoolers. After preschool, I was thrilled to go to kindergarten so everyone in my class would…

Over the years, my interest and awareness regarding reading and writing have varied from time to time. I remember my mother reading bedtime stories to me as a child and actually painting my personal pictures to what she was saying. Once I was old enough to read the stories myself, I would go back and compare my mental pictures with those that were in the book. During my elementary days, I found the novice level of reading and writing to still be interesting. Everything from transferring imaginary stories I had thought of onto a sheet of paper to tell the entire class about my church league team winning the basketball championship the previous Saturday, I thoroughly enjoyed writing and felt I had a personal connection to it.…

The mom and her son had this very irritating habit of leaving dirty dishes in the sink. I really tried to ignore the inconvenience. I had to constantly remind myself that it was a temporary situation. However, when the son started to steal the children’s food and snacks, I decided to have a talk with him. Sadly, he didn’t listen to me and carried on with his thieving ways. Eventually, I had to tell his mom what was going on, and that made things a bit awkward for a while. O well!…

Two of the people that have had the biggest influence on my literacy education are my parents. When I was young, around the ages of 4-6, I have faint memories of my parents helping to enrich my literacy. They accomplished this by reading to me starting at a younger than average age. They did all sorts of things to further my education, not just helping to build literacy skills. However, some of the fondest memories I have from when I was really little are about reading. My parents helped improve my literacy by reading to me, buying me a lot of books, taking me to the library, and answering my questions about words/reading.…
