Shark-Personal Narrative
I felt my lips swell, as I breathed in the salty beach air at Amity Point. As reached down over the boat, I felt the soothing water gently run through my fingers. It was my first time spear fishing and saying that I felt scared was an understatement. I was about to plunge into the water when I felt a shiver run through my spine; I had forgotten to pack my second oxygen tank. How stupid could I be? Besides the fact that I was as nervous as a fish in a shark tank, I decided not to worry about it as I still had my main tank. Holding the speargun, I leant back off the boat and landed in the water. The water was a perfect temperature. As I looked back up to the boat my grandpa reassured me that I would be fine. Instantly I felt a lot less stressed about what I was doing. Once I …show more content…
In fear I looked behind me to see what appeared to be an enormous Wobbegong shark feeding on the once vicious fish that tried to attack me. Just as I reached the boat I felt a rough pull on the speargun. As I turned my body I noticed that the shark had taken a bite into the speargun, ripping the cord that connected it to my wetsuit. Even though I had in the past been taught how to fend off a shark, I wasn’t sure that I was capable of putting those skills into practise. Instead of turning my back to the shark I stayed in a forward position, so I could be ready for anything the shark tried to do. As the shark worked its way over to me I grabbed the snorkel of me head, preparing myself for the fight of my life. Its mouth was fingertips from my leg, when I delivered a skin piercing jab to the side of its head. To my surprise the shark was stunned. This could be my only chance to get away. As I screamed for help, I threw my arms over the boat. Struggling to pull myself up over the boat, my grandpa quickly ran over to me and lifted me over the boat. As I laid down on the boat’s deck I sighed in relief. After about a minute I finally regained

I almost fell right out of the canoe I was so startled. I casted my line right where I heard the splash and not ten seconds after, I saw a fish jump right out of the water and take my fly. It tug so hard the whole way i was reeling it in and i thought it was going to break but luckily I was able to get the fish to the boat. It was the biggest fish i’ve ever caught and even seen in real life. My dad tried to take a picture of my catch, before he could get the camera out, the fish slipped out of my hand and plopped into the water. That whole night was filled with fishing. I caught at least a dozen more, while my dad only caught three. On our way back to the cabin I told my dad,”That was seriously funny that i caught more fish than you and you’ve been here many more times than I have.”…

    Shark: Blood and Dr. Ramos

by Herbert House Biology Department Elon University, Elon, N.C. It was 5:00 PM on a hot summer afternoon. Eight-year-old Jim Morris, wading in the warm current off Florida's Gulf Coast, swam easily toward his sister Amy and his uncle Robert. But the kids' fun in the shoulder-deep water was cut short by Jim's shouts of "Get it off me! Get it off me!" Amy's screams sliced through the peacefully rolling breakers like a knife, "Help! A shark has bitten off my brother's arm! Call 911!" Nearby swimmers heard the cries as Uncle Robert yelled, "Help us get the shark. It swallowed the arm!" The swimmers converged on the spot, grabbing the six-and-a-half-foot bull shark by the tail and holding on for dear life. The twitching shark was hauled ashore barehanded by the group of men and shot. They pried open the shark's mouth while Robert pulled Jim's right arm out from between its jaws. As the boy's blood soaked into the white sand, lifeguards began CPR and applied a tourniquet. Paramedics arrived to stabilize Jim for transport to nearby Coastal Hospital. His arm was packed in ice and taken along. In the emergency room, Dr. Elaine Rogers, the physician on duty, quickly ordered multiple transfusions to restore the boy's blood supply as the ER team began stabilizing his vital signs. Dr. Rogers began assembling the operating room team that would attempt to reattach Jim's arm. She called Ronan McBane, a microvascular surgeon, at his home. "Ronan, we have a cleanly severed arm due to a shark bite. It looks like it was just chopped off, with not much shredding of the tissue. The sharp-edged teeth of the shark bit through the boy's arm so cleanly it almost seems to have been severed by a cleaver. The boy is eight years old and, although he is still in pretty bad shape, we think that since the arm was recovered and is in reasonably good condition, we have a good chance at success." Further conversation convinced Ronan that reattachment was possible. By the time Dr.…

You would have to deal with not only pain but everybody wanting to ask you questions about what happened. Some people may even make fun of you or be scared. That would be a terrible feeling to have. Everything you do would be at least ten times harder.…

I was with my dad fishing on a Friday during the summer at about 4:30 PM. The day was hot and bugs were everywhere around us. I had on jeans, a t-shirt and a vest to store any fish we catch. My dad had on the same, but i had a smaller fishing rod than he did because I was small and not really ready for a fishing rod like my dad’s. We went out to fish and started at a bridge that was very rundown and poorly maintained and didn’t catch much because of the current and rocks around where we were. We got one fish to bite but it fell off whenever we pulled it up out of the water. We then decided to move to another spot over by the cliffs and ridges because no one was there to get in the way. For a while we didn’t go anywhere too crazy and nowhere that took too much effort to get to. Little did I know was that it’d all change quicker than I thought..…

I have a deep interest in the ocean and marine life, which was fostered when my family and I moved to the Pacific Coast. This interest grew further after I went on a backstage tour to the aquarium at the Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Due to this continuous exposure to the ocean and the creatures that live there, I am focusing my education around my interest in marine life. It's for this reason that I’m majoring in Marine Biology with a minor in Chemistry. With this education, my goal is to become an Aquarist, and build my way up to becoming an ocean or aquarium diver. As a diver, I want to have the opportunity to study coral reefs, and create and implement conservation plans. In addition, I want to study sea turtles and ways to conserve their declining…

I saw the rip current open up a few times that day, but by the time it rolled around noon, it was pulling more because the water was going out for low tide. When I saw the raft, I never really put two and two together until the raft got in the rip current. Two kids and their dad were rapidly moving out to sea. I reacted just like we were taught in class; dropping my flag and calling in on the radio. I leaped from my tower to the sand, grabbed my buoy and sprinted down the beach. I did a perry angle and took off into the water, throwing my buoy to the side as I got knee deep in the surf. I porpoise dove through the shallow water, came up and sprinted out to my victims, keeping a close eye on them as I did. By the time I got to them, the dad had abandoned his kids and swam in saving himself. The kids had jumped out of the raft, which was now upside down and proceeded to try swimming the raft in. I told them I was a lifeguard and here to help. The girl, about my age, looked at me as if I were crazy and told me they didn't need any help. I looked at her younger brother, who was tired and panting, and I asked if he was okay. He desperately told me, gasping for a breath, that he needed help. I wouldn't have been able to bring both victims and the raft in, while fighting a rip current. So I firmly grabbed the rope on the raft, with each of them holding, and started to kick. I soon realized I was getting nowhere and still drifting out to sea. Panicking, I scanned the beach for back up. When the lifeguard truck pulled up, I let out a sigh of relief. There were about 5 guards who came hustling out of the truck with buoys to come and back me up. When they reached me, it took some pulling to get everyone in safely raft…

We must call the Rangers’ office because he cannot support the pain he had that day, and I even had to drive back home. Earlier that day, my cousin Joe, called and talked me into a fishing trip. Normally, it did not take much coercing or twisting of my arm to get me on the water, but it was the hottest days we had in awhile. It was June of 2002 and I lived in Baltimore at the time. Joe came up with the brilliant idea of night fishing, and assured me the monster bass were on the prowl in the cool evening. We gathered our back packs and tackle boxes and loaded them with our favorite fishing gear, filled the cooler with food and beer, and purchased enough bait to catch every fish in the reservoir. This had become a monthly ritual, which usually ended with a lake full of overfed fish and two over indulged fishermen walking through the woods at night.…
