Shane Koyczan's Poem 'To This Day'
To This Day
Shane Koyczan

“We grew up believing no one would ever fall in love with us that we’d be lonely forever that we’d never meet someone to make us feel like the sun was something they built for us in their tool shed.” The poem ‘To this day’ written by Shane Koyczan revolves around his and others’ experience with bullying while growing up, it sheds light on the deeper and long-term effects of the worldwide epidemic and raises awareness to the ignorant bystanders and predators. Through his poem Koyczan also showed the impact of unsettled, unstable and unbalanced family lives. Overall, I think that Koyczan effectively used language techniques that enhanced the meaning of his well written poem, I also believe that the issues and personal

I believe, that these were used to heighten the emotional intensity of the composition by creating a poignant atmosphere, furthermore, this led the reader to believe that the effects of bullying are much greater than what is seen, and through Koyczan’s poem we were able to look beyond the stereotypical outcomes: self-harming, depression, anxiety… of the life ending torment that is, rapidly and increasingly being experienced by many. In my opinion, the writer focused his poem on the growing issue of bullying because of its personal and societal relevance, this was clearly displayed during the start of the poem wherein he wrote “When I was a kid, I used to think that pork chops and karate chops were the same thing” this was effectively used to convince the reader that the writer is talking about a personal experience, as a result, readers felt more connected to the poem thus making it more relatable. Lastly, I think that using the issue of bullying as a predominant topic is really appropriate because it raises and helps the readers gain an insight on the …show more content…
It also produced valuable information on the effects of childhood experiences. In my opinion, this poem should be read by everyone because it sheds light on the many issues that our world faces. In the essay ”Bully Pulpit” Rachel Giese puts the question “Is anti-bullying hysteria harming our kids?”, and shares how the nemesis of bullying has matured over the years. She is of the opinion that the way it is being tackled exhibits generational obliviousness. Rachel starts off by sharing her personal experience over the past six months during which period her 8 year old son was reprimanded by the school authorities on many occasions for being a bully. The difference in bullying in her and her son’s generation has been that the line between the aggressor and the victim has been drawn thicker. Rachel explains that over last one year, because of bullying and extreme torment from their peers, several young people have killed themselves.…

In the visual poem To This Day by Shane Koyczan is about bullying. There is a picture in the video of a girl with a lion head, a skull and a lot of lines around her head. The lion head represents what she thinks she looks like because of what the people call her. The skull represents all the people thinking about harming themselves because of the names they’re being called. The lines around her head symbolize everybody bullying her and she cant get a break. In conclusion these symbols symbolize the overall effect bullying can have on a…

In the poem, “To This Day” By Shane koyczan he shows a bibliography about bullying and how it affects people. And how he got bullied as a kid. People need to understand that what they say doesn't just go one ear out the other. People can be extremely hurtful without knowing it. One thing that kids said from the poem is, “kids used to say she looks like a wrong answer that someone tried to erase but couldn’t quite get the job done”. That is just one of the many things kids said. The quote shows that even if people think i can't get worse that is usually when it does. But the problem is that people dont understand the scar that they leave when they do those…

The true beauty of this poem for me, and what makes it so enigmatic, is the mutual recognition in a person, between two moments past and future, of one's frame of mind at the other moment. We are so long in time, that such connections are very, very rare, and to have a moment of empathy with one's future or past self is both to gain a momentary insight into the nature of life and aging, and to momentarily gain a new internal context to how we perceive the aging of others, and what it really means to…

In the poem Shane Koyczan shows that bullying will never go away like from the poem, it says “to this day despite a loving husband, she doesn’t think she's beautiful because of a birthmark that takes up a little less than half of her face” (Koyczan), she became sad because she believed them that she was ugly from when they put “... a sign to her desk that read beware of dog” (Koyczan), that happened in grade five, but it all started in“... grade three where she got called ugly” (Koyczan),…

I've seen some bullying in this school before and these lines explain similar things to bullying. I used to be cruel to my woman/I beat her and kept apart from the things that she loved/Man I was mean but I'm changing my scene/And I'm doing the best that I can. The man is being cruel to his woman and he tries to change his ways. In this school I saw someone bullying a fellow student and a few months later. I saw them again and saw that they were friends. This shows that enemies can become friends.…

Throughout high school, victims of bullying faced many psychiatric problems, but unfortunately for them, the mental effects of bullying did not end as their high school days did. In the first study of its kind, led by Laura Bogart, researchers found that “At any age, bullying was linked with worse mental and physical health, more depressive symptoms and lower sense of self worth” (“Bullying Affects Children’s Long-Term Health”, Study Shows 1) The likeliness of whether someone would develop a mental disorder depended on who the person was, the bully, the victim, or the bully victim. In William Copeland’s study on the long-term effects of bullying, he found that pure victims had a higher risk for panic attacks, anxiety, depression, and agoraphobia, about four times more (Pappas 2). The greatest problem that victims are prone to is anxiety. Copeland stated that, “victims report the greatest anxiety problems. They might be successful later on, but they still think about the event and hold onto it.”(“Bullying Exerts Psychiatric Effects Into Adulthood”…

Before, in the 20th century, bullying was a regular thing in everyday life. In this time, no one paid attention to effect that bullying had on kids because no one at the time showed any serious reaction to bullying. In 1999, two seniors at Columbine High School killed a total of 13 people which brought attention to the world. With a link of aggression and bullying, this became more serious issue. Entering the new century, many of those who have had a personal connection with bullying or some one who has been bullied have been speaking out and against this issue while others stay silent against this cause. Those who advocate against bullying and those who stay silent, both participate in this way because of personal experiences and personal fears.…

The lack of understanding towards the concequences of bullying. Suicide. It's a touchy subject isn't it? But it happens; it's a fact of life. Did you know that every 90 minutes, somewhere in the world, a teenager takes their own life? There are over 5000 teenage suicides every year. Half of those, that's around 2,500 lives, are taken not due to family issues, not due to depression or abuse, not due to pressure at school, but due to bullying. There are various types of it, but most have three things in common; it is deliberately hurtful behaviour, it is typically repeated over time and often there is an imbalance of power, which makes it hard for those being bullied to defend themselves. There is a certain type of bullying which is becoming more of a social problem; cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is the act of causing harm to others using digital media like email, mobile phones, social networking sites, and the general internet. This is one of the most common forms of Internet abuse because of its supposed anonymity and instant power. Users say and do things they would never do in public or real life. Did you know that over 58% of adolescents and teenagers have been bullied? And around the same number have been engaged in cyber bullying? Did you know that more than 1 in 3 young people have been threatened online? Whether it is an empty threat or a violent threat, it's still a threat. Cyber bullying leads to people having low self esteem and a damaged view of the way they see themselves. Those people who are subject to such cyber bullying are up to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than those who haven't experienced it. Do you have any idea of what it feels like to be bullied? Well let me tell you. Being bullied is almost like being dehumanised. It's like feeling you've got nobody, it's like feeling you're alone, isolated, without anybody to turn to. It makes you feel small, like you're worthless, like nobody in the world cares.…
