Sexual Violence In Prison Essay

As a warden, I already know that discovering a program or strategy that will address sexual violence in my prison is not an easy task. Today’s prisons and predators are not as bad as the horror stories that might have been told to us when we were younger. Today’s predators, can be compared to pedophile in that they groom their victims (i.e. new prisoners) in a series of predictable stages to get what they want or desire. For some new inmates, this can go undetected for quite some time which can be a reason why many inmates continue to have reservations about reporting any acts of sexual violence to correctional staff. Other reasons include inmates doubting that the prison staff will not take such reports of sexual violence seriously, fear of retaliation or not being protected after an inmate reports an incident. To begin handling the sexual violence in my prison, I would first attempt to instill in everyone that any inmate or staff member found guilty of a sexual act, will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Inmates come to prison to carry out a sentence not to be victimized. Second, I would implement some type of inmate education program. Meaning that before PRE, little to no information was known about how a prison system prevented, detected or investigated reports of sexual assaults. Today all that has changed and continues to change with more response or sex of victim’s categories being added for the 2013 collection year and more inmates reaching out for help. Since PRE’s implementation, sexual assaults in prison have dropped dramatically which is a good thing. What I hope is someone will come up with a successful strategy to use throughout every prison system that will eradicate sexual assaults or come
