Discrimination is an action that denies participation or human rights to a person based on prejudice. Different types of discrimination include; age, race, disability, religion, gender, and sexual harassment. Discriminating for any of these reasons is illegal. However enforcing and preventing discrimination is very difficult. One of the most controversial discriminating categories is sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is harassing an individual because of their sex. Sexual harassment can include requests for sexual favors, unwelcome sexual advances, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. There are two different types of sexual harassment. Quid Pro Quo and Hostile environment sexual harassment are the two different types. Quid Pro Quo harassment occurs when job benefits, salary increase or promotions are exchanged for sexual favors. This usually happens when a supervisor, manager, or boss abuses their power and authority to receive a sexual favor. The employee is basically in fear of losing their job or promotion so they are forced to comply or file a claim. An example of Quid Pro Quo sexual harassment would be if a supervisor told an employee that she would more likely be promoted if she dressed sexier. Hostile environment sexual harassment is when a co-worker or supervisor makes sexual advances or comments to an employee that make the work environment offensive and hostile. This type of harassment however doesn’t affect the progression of the employee in the company, but does affect their ability to perform their job. Some instances of hostile environment sexual harassment can be personal questions of a sexual nature, vulgarities and other offensive language, sexual conduct that is degrading to a reasonable person, and any sexual explicit pictures or literature that is in plain sight of other employees.
