From a sociological perspective, it is important to understand the struggles that women have and still do face in our society. These struggles are engrained from stereotypes, seeing women as inferior to men. Early on, society defined the expectations of male and females. Men worked and were the breadwinners. They held powerful jobs in society, such as doctors, lawyers, and politicians. Women, on the other hand, were expected to stay home, raise children. If they did work, it was a stereotypically female profession, such as teachers or nurses. History shows that these expectations were constricting for women. Conflict theory of gender stratification would say that inequality is destructive to society because it creates a permanent structure of winners and losers. Gender stratification benefits men at the expense of women, therefore it is dysfunctional and will harm society. Women do not get a fair chance in jobs, wages, duties in the household, etc., which cause continuous inequality. For example, Let’s look at a single mother, a man is going to have greater access to the jobs and better pay than a woman would. This idea does not explain the entire problem. However, women earn less than men even on jobs where all other qualifications are equal. The lower pay makes it hard to earn enough to move beyond a paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle, and the woman has no other means to move ahead. This structure ends up creating and continuing gender
