Johns are “white males from developed nations” because of the preference for children who are virgins (Jordan, Patel, & Rapp, 2013, p.362). Johns come in three different types of offenders, situational, preferential, and opportunistic. Situational buyers only buy acts because they have access to weak children (Jordan, Patel, & Rapp, 2013, p.362). Pedophiles are the most common type of preferential buyers. The have a desire for a certain type of victim that the search in hopes of finding them (Jordan, Patel, & Rapp, 2013, p.362). This section was amended when David Paterson, the New York Governor, signed the law Assembly Bill, which provides sex trafficking victims with post-conviction relief from charges relative to prostitution when forced to do so (Barnard, 2014, p.1463). This is the opportunity for the individuals to not be treated as criminals, but as victims by dropping charges for acts not necessarily done willingly.
