Sex Ethics

Good Essays
In the Western culture we are a very sex negative society. For example looking at how kids are taught about sex its always a very negative way. Classes are typically oriented around avoiding sex (abstinence) and how it can be potentially harming to how people view them. The topics of masturbation, prostitution and pornography are very much frowned upon in the Western culture because live in such a sex negative secluded society. These things shouldn’t be looked on as unethical because it is every individual’s choice with their sexuality and how they want to perceive it as. Masturbation is frowned upon by many religions and in many cultures as well. In the 1600’s it was illegal for men in China to masturbate because they were putting their potential offspring to waste. Reality is, it is not likely to find a person that does not masturbate. It’s a natural activity done by humans to reduce stress, help them go to sleep or just doing it for the sexual pleasure they got out of it. Sex is a natural act and need for people. It’s a drive and motive; it’s not something that should be looked at as unethical. People masturbate in the sense to help their state of mind. Not everyone will do it and might find it odd but its ethical value should stay that it’s okay to do. Alongside the unethical issue of masturbation, prostitution is also a problem that many people have with individuals. The idea of selling a person’s body for money and sexual purposes comes off as a little off and not very ethical. Many people think in this perspective because they could not imagine living in someone’s shoes being a prostitute and selling their body’s to act of sex. Prostitution is a choice of one’s own and how they want to lead their lives. Whether it is ethical to most people, probably not. In my eyes I think it is ethical in a respect to if the man or woman is being safe about their acts and understands the consequences of what they are doing. Many people lead to prostitution because they need to put food on a table, raise a family, pay bills and simply need to something other than work a low paying minimum wage job to help support their family. How does that make prostitution unethical? Every person has his or her own way of getting by life. Another taboo topic that emerges in the western culture is the topic of the porn industry and pornography. With the progression of technology and how film gets around, pornography has become one of the easiest accessible things in today’s age. With a click of a button and the typing of a few words anyone can have access to porn on the Internet. The ethical issue with pornography is exposing ones self and being recorded as an occupation. Many people find pornography like prostitution unethical because a person is throwing their body out in the open like a pile of skin with no other value but sex. I don’t think this is unethical because everyone plays a role in society. Whether the role be a janitor, a shop owner or teacher, some peoples potential and calling was to be a porn star. Pornography shouldn’t be looked as unethical but in a positive way in order to help some couples and individuals not only improve their sex lives, but also their relationship with a spouse. Porn can be used as tool to help relationships and sex lives. Its not unethical just a different method of how to help relationships. These three issues of masturbation, prostitution and pornography are all ethical in their own sense. Each of these holds a natural quality to them in how individuals express themselves sexually and how they go through with their days. Some people have different methods of how to hold up a family and unfortunately many people look at them as unethical and immoral.

In Linda Pastan's poem "Ethics," the speaker recounts a moral dilemma that her teacher would ask every fall, which has been haunting her for a long time. The question was "if there were a fire in a museum / which would you save, a Rembrandt painting / or an old woman who hadn't many / years left anyhow?" and the speaker tells us through the theme that ethics and moral values can be only learned from the reflection which comes through experience and maturity. In this poem, imagery, diction, and figures of speech contribute to the development of the theme.…

There are several different viewpoints on the subject of masturbation it is even mentioned in the bible as, early as the Book of Genesis. This religion viewed masturbation a sin and deemed it to be something that you would be punished for. At one point it was only acceptable if it was performed by a doctor or a midwife as part of a medical treatment for “hysteria” but was still condemned as a form of sexual pleasure. Another point of view is that any expression of sexuality is wrong before an individual is married. A final point of view is that it is psychologically and physically dangerous that it creates an unrealistic view of sex and may make it harder for an individual to perform and in some cases render a person infertile.…

Prostitution is said to be “the world’s oldest profession” (Ramchandran par. 1). The Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines prostitution as “the act or practice of engaging in promiscuous sexual relations especially for money” (“Prostitution” par. 1). Many people argue that prostitution should be legalized, but it hurts people more than it helps. Legalization of prostitution condones sexual behavior for profit. Not to mention, the increased risk of illness or infection via sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs), or death. It also does not “enhance women’s choices” (Raymond par. 45). This means that whether legalized or not, prostitutes are going to continue their activities for the simple fact that they feel they have no other choice. Lastly, prostitution and the sex industry promote sex trafficking, more specifically human trafficking. For these aforementioned reasons prostitution should remain illegal.…

A 19 year old college student and addicted gambler was pulled over for erratic driving on the Long Island Expressway. He pulled out a toy pistol and pointed it at the officer, he was then shot and killed. Another incident involving a 45 year old cancer patient had the same ending in new Jersey. He walked into a Pizza Shop and pointed a gun at the officers inside eating. Experts believe that they force the cops to kill them as a form of suicide. Suicide is difficult to commit and forcing an officer to kill you takes away the pressure of completing the task. Some insurance companies don’t cover suicide and religions forbid it so it is away of taking the guilt and shame away from common suicide. 10% of fatal police shootings are brought on by people seeking to die.…

Masturbation is a pressure release, a natural sleeping pill, and a plain old-fashioned good time ( as if we need to sell you on it). Choking the chicken, ticklin the pickle, beating the meat, spanking the monkey… whatever you want to call it, masturbation is a pretty common habit these days. No one in their right mind would admit to masturbating in private, but the truth of the matter is majority of people does it. While America frowns upon masturbation others embrace their sexuality.…

Whether or not conscience is the best guide to making moral decisions on sexual ethics depends on one key thing, what conscience is. There are many different views of this, with many different philosophers taking a point of view on the definition. Freud, an 19th Century Austrian Neurologist said that conscience is the conflict between our ‘ego' and our ‘super-ego', which depends on our upbringing and societies rules as to how it imposes of what we do, known to us, as guilt, where obeying our super-ego rather than our ego resulted in guilt.…

The value of a code of sexual ethics is one that is extremely important to hold close to ones mind and soul. Human sexuality is a broad topic in society and everyone has different views on what is important to them as individuals. My view of human sexuality has been shaped with many influences. Growing up, my Mother always taught me to be comfortable with my sexuality, and I watched my older siblings show the same confidence that my Mother was teaching me. She taught me to respect others and myself equally, no matter what label of sexuality that they hold. Basically; “Treat others how you want to be treated”. I hope to teach my children in the same effective way that my Mother taught my siblings and I. I feel as though having this code of sexual…
