Sex plays a major role in today's society. From television, radio, music, and advertisements, to video games, the Internet, and even art and pictures, all forms of media use sex to help sell their products. With the public being exposed to so many different types, the overuse and exploitation of sex is common. Is sex a useful tool, or a ploy to get the attention of the public? Before discussing sex in the media, one must understand why it has come to be that people use sex as a gimmick.
"The writing of modern history has resulted in a viewpoint that is nothing short of a stag party. The history of women is ignored, hushed up, and censored in the most literal sense of the term. This method of eliminating the social and political destiny of half of humanity is the most effective form of supremacy." (Janssen-Jurreit 189)
The world as it exists today, is still man-made, no less now then in the nineteenth century. Alice E. Courtney states, "Women's self-awareness as females has until very recently reflected the world's (mostly men's) image of them; how well their personal performance matched male expectations." These individual roles, as described by Oneill and Leone in Male/Female Roles: Opposing Viewpoints as the relationship of a man or woman to society on the basis of gender, became essential in shaping male and female attitudes towards one another. Over the past twenty years remarkable changes in these traditional male and female roles have been witnessed. The subsequent impact on men, women, and families due to these changes is believed to be, by many social historians, caused by the re-emergence of the women's movement. (Oneill and Leone 138) Though a positive alteration of roles has occurred, how is it that children of this century still may obey stereotypes? "A baby is born knowing nothing, but full of potential." (Oneill

In the last one hundred years, advertisers and film directors have gotten lazy in their fields. Even the writers and directors of commercials have started to lose their talent. Have you noticed that whatever product you are looking into, from burgers to perfume, scandalously clad models and actresses crowd the shot, while the actual product is touched or used once or twice? This is due to the idea that’s been sweeping the offices of writers everywhere, that “Sex sells”. A lack of moral values has been polluting our television channels and commercials between shows, and it’s gotten to the point that women are so overly sexualizxed a new mother can’t even feed her infant child in public without unnecessary criticism and insults. Gender roles are constantly changing, but there is not enough progress in the gender identity chosen by society for women. A woman being depicted in the media as weak or lesser than a man is not tolerable. Just because these femininity performances have been repeated for so long in history does not make it natural that women should act and be represented in that way. (Alberts, 2007) It is the twenty-first century and women should be considered strong, independent and equal to men. This is still not the case as women are often also over sexualized in the media, which causes real world…

Throughout history, the roles of women have changed dramatically. Women have been enslaved, been stripped of their rights, been given more rights, have been put down in society and been brought up. Women slowly, but surely have evolved into individuals one sees today: in public office, law firms or even the five o'clock news. However, this evolution did not occur overnight. It took time and effort to attain the position in society they have today. A major era in which the growth of a woman's place took hold was during and after the First World War.…

Everyday people are subjected to some type of unwritten restraint because of ethics or censorship in their daily lives. This oppressive way of life represents how we have grown up and what we have been taught by generations before us. Freedom is achieved through the fight for liberties and rights, and in today's generation, censorship is an ever-growing restriction and constraint put on society, primarily with the usage of a natural occurrence, sex. If we want a truthful and honest society, be truthful to children. Let them know how we are all created, teach and inform them about sex, don't keep them in the dark by talking about storks, birds, and bees.…

Why do our Disney Channel teenage idols turn to exploiting their selves in a sexual matter to better their careers? This is what sells in American society; this what sex in the media brings about. With the increase of technology in the past decade we are viewing and listening to more sexually explicit material then ever. The traditional roles of men and women can be described in terms of their responsibilities and tasks. Men are the head of the family; the breadwinner, they are career-oriented, strong and powerful. Women, on the other hand, are responsible for preparing day-to-day meal, cleaning the house, sewing dresses, bearing children and staying home to look after them. Changing the traditional roles has resulted to different behaviors and perspectives. A mother who pursues a career may be criticized for leaving her children in someone else’s care. If a woman actively seeks a promotion at work, she may be called aggressive. If a man cries when he is upset or sad, he may be ridiculed as a sissy or coward. If a father enjoys feeding or playing with his baby, he may be considered less masculine.…

A landmark study published by the Rand Corporation in 2004 found that watching television shows with sexual content is associated with earlier teen engagement in sexual activity. Gender Discrimination

Around the mid-nineteenth century until nowadays, three beliefs about women and men have prevailed as part of biology or evolution. “One, men and women have different psychological and sexual natures, two- men are inherently the dominant or superior sex, and three – both male female difference and male dominance are natural.” (Bem, 1993). Considering these three beliefs, women experience gender inequality in different environments, stereotypes, and occupations. For example, women are stereotyped to be only a stay at home wife and to be in an environment where they are responsible for cleaning the house, cooking dinner,…
