Sethe In Beloved
"You know as well as I do that people who die bad don 't stay in the ground."(188) Beloved as a character is Sethe 's baby girl who has returned to her in the form of a fully grown woman. Beloved rises out of water like a baby being born, and from the first moment the reader is introduced to her, they get the feeling that she is much more than she seems. Here it shall be explored how Beloved 's physical characteristics, along with the way she acts, show us that she is Sethe 's murdered baby girl, that has risen again.
From the first moment that the reader is introduced to Beloved, they are given the impression of a supernatural being. "A fully dressed women walked out of the water." This has an unnatural feeling to it, almost like that of

As Beloved becomes more confident she begins to treat Sethe as her mother, while she herself acts like a toddler. This again makes the reader think of Beloved as Sethe 's baby. Sethe 's baby was just crawling when she was killed and therefore may have already been talking, but was still a toddler and yet to mature. Proof of this is seen with in the novel, "she made demands. Anything she wanted she got, and when Sethe ran out of things to give her, Beloved invented desires."(204) Another signal is Beloved 's sibling rivalry with Denver. Although Beloved loves Denver she claims Sethe as her own and seems to be jealous that Denver has gotten more time with Sethe. The reader finds evidence of this when Beloved claims Sethe as her own and states, "I am Beloved and she is mine"(210). Beloved also gets Sethe to exclude Denver from their games. Her similarities with a toddler and the infatuation said toddler would have with its mother, in this case Sethe, are also seen in how angry Beloved gets when she does not receive all of Sethe’s attention, she has “anger that ruled when Sethe did or thought anything that excluded herself.”(118). However it is not just Denver that Beloved drives away. Beloved also gets Paul D to leave by seducing him, and due to her constant need for attention ensures that Sethe loses her job and has to spend all of her time at home. She even …show more content…

Sethe would have done almost anything to protect her children and provide for them. The reason she has so much live for her children, maybe even a hint of obsession, is because her own mother did not care much her and she wanted to do what she thought was best for her children. She wanted them to be fed. Her mother instincts kicked in and all she could repeat was that she could not give her children milk, the food to keep them from starvation. But this quote contradicts the reason she killed her daughter and attempted to kill all of her children. Sethe wanted to give the baby her milk to keep her alive, but then begins to reason why keep them alive? To make them endure the same dehumanization she had endured? Sympathy is earned for Sethe for all that she had to sacrifice and endure, but it made her more protective and loving. Which can connect to present situations. People are who they are through the experiences they go…

The three opening stanzas are spoken by a narrator-type voice. This speaker sets the scene and tone of the piece: that of Petrarchan love, with the topos of an unattainable beloved, whose love burns and pains the Lover. He introduces the characters: Damon the mower, and Lover; and Juliana, the cruel beloved. The narrator expounds Juliana 's character and Damon 's perception of her, she is one to behold, “Like her fair Eyes the day was fair;” (3). However, the short-lived compliment of her eyes is accompanied with words like stung, complaint, scorching, and fear that exemplify Juliana who is scornful and one to be feared, and scornful.…

The institution of slavery was the murder of equality, and the birth of dehumanization. In Beloved by Toni Morrison, the use of rhetorical devices conveys this point indefinitely. On pages 175 to 176, Morrison focuses in on the most antagonistic character of the novel: Schoolteacher. In portraying his perspective, Morrison is able to achieve her purpose within the novel, and about society as a whole. The effective phrasing of diction and imagery allows Morrison to give the reader a holistic view on the state of mind behind the ultimate supporters of slavery.…

In gothic literature, love can be presented as a transgressive emotion – one which crosses the boundaries of life itself, as exhibited in Wuthering Heights. There are however different interpretations of the presentation of love within this novel, whether it be love as an emotion provoking violence or love as an emotion which provokes tenderness. Although both presentations of love are arguably illustrated in Wuthering Heights, it may be fair to argue that Bronte portrays love more as an emotion which provokes tenderness rather than violence.…

She feels that she is a “burden” to him because of her “nervous troubles”. John seems to treat the narrator as if she really does have something wrong with her even though her “case is no serious”. He tells her that “nothing was worse for a nervous patient than to give way to such fantasies”. He puts the narrator in a “nursery” as if she is a small child. He refers to her as a “blessed little goose”. He also tries to keep her away from all contact with people. He tells her that her baby makes her “so nervous” and when she wants her cousins to visit he tells her that “he would as soon put fireworks in my pillow-case as to let me have those stimulating people about now”. The narrator describes the wallpaper as “torn off in spots and it sticketh closer than a brother,” which talks about her relationship with John which is strong but they still have a few problems. Also she says, “must have had perseverance as well as hatred” which means that she believes in John and thinks that he is doing what’s best for her however she does have a feeling of hatred sometimes for him because he keeps her locked in and doesn’t treat her as a normal…

Due to Sethe’s enslavement and immense regret of the past, she gives too much of herself to Beloved and loses her own sense of identity. When Sethe realizes that Beloved truly is the reincarnation of her infant daughter, she begins to lose the ability to differentiate between herself and her daughter. Sethe’s poor mental health and love for her daughter causes her to blur the line between herself and Beloved until she feels that they are a part of each other: “I am Beloved and she is mine. I see her take flowers away from leaves she puts them in a round basket the leaves are not for her… I would help her but the clouds are in the way how can I say things that are pictures” (248). When Sethe states that she is “Beloved and she is mine,” she is confirming that she still…
