~Mahatma Gandhi. Service is to help others in need or not in need. I am excited to try to do even more service in the future. I have many ideas for the school when it comes to service. One idea is to help children in hospitals by just making them something like a card or decoration. My dad is working with a company that is rebuilding St. Peter’s Hospital and I know that some of the kids in the children’s section of the hospital would love something to cheer them up. Right now for service I give my old clothes and toys to my younger cousin and if she doesn’t want them, we take them to the Salvation Army. Also like I had mentioned in the first paragraph we donate over three or four hundred dollars a year to the WGY Christmas wish organization. That money goes to poor families so the parents can buy presents or food for their children. I know I need to work on this skill in particular but I have many good…

The service users at my work placement would also be benefited because I have enough knowledge from college and experiences to provide adequate care and support to them as well as meeting their needs. For example, I have been able to learn about equality, diversity and rights which have helped me realise the importance of anti-discriminatory practice and promoting equal opportunity. Implementing this into practice would have maintained the self-esteem of the service users as well as making them feel respected and valued. I have also learnt about effective communication and how to implement it into practice. One time during my placement at a special needs school, I was asked to work closely with a student who is not very good at speaking English. Being patient and using effective communication motivated her to work better and…

Think back to when you were a kid and you waited anxiously for the whole school year to be over with so you could do that one special thing. For my friends and I it was going to the big, red bricked church down the road and getting free sack lunches. There is no question that my Service-Learning is going to be beneficial to my future and my career, as it is intended to do. However, at times it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly how it will affect my future. By preparing for my St. Ambrose visits through rehearsals and the singing of secular music, it is becoming more apparent that this experience is going to be beneficial to my future endeavors, especially ones involved in teaching and performing, by increasing my people skills and helping me to become more comfortable in showcasing what I know to all types of audiences.…

Service learning is an education method that is used to provide the student with the ability to discover themselves, become productive and helpful citizens, and to gain academic knowledge while doing so. I think service learning is included in this course because it helps us to become more connected with our surroundings. Great teachers are active in there community and know the struggles that the community faces and wants to help. When a teacher understands her community she can better understand her students. Also, I think it is included to teach us that we can always find time to do what is important. Quite often we trick…

In a society where individuals are interconnected like never before through the use of social media, it is still all too easy to forget about others who struggle every day from the impact of bullying. People, most often school-aged students, suffer in silence as they are relentlessly tormented, with seemingly no helping hand in sight. This issue, which is all too common in educational settings, was what I chose to focus on throughout my service learning experience in both my observations and my activities. Bullying in any of its forms, whether it be sexual harassment, cyberbullying, or its “traditional” manifestation of generalized harassment, relates directly to the topic of health and one’s physical and mental wellbeing. The impacts of bullying…

Our first SMART goal was to increase the sets or repetitions for the participants each session, but it unfortunately was not achieved. We noticed they were bored with the repetitiveness of the same routine, which brought us to devise a plan to get them better motivated. Instead of traditional weightlifting and cardio, we implemented sports equipment, such as soccer balls, volleyballs, and kickballs, and changed the workout routine a bit. Once we changed it and made a new SMART goal, we measured the progress by making sure the participants were actively motivated for at least thirty minutes of the session. We started with making sure they could stay active for fifteen minutes, and then the next session for twenty minutes, until we reached our goal of thirty minutes. Each week we saw an increase in their motivation and performance after we gave them encouraging remarks for their accomplishments in games that we took part in as well, like…

The course concept that I’ve been thinking most about is Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development. The four stages, including sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational and formal operational, are very interesting to me. Sensorimotor is the infant stage, from birth to 2 years old, and preoperational is about 2 to 7. Concrete operational follows from 7 to 12 while formal operational is 12 to adulthood.…
