Servant Leadership
Before taking this class I had a very different idea about leadership. When I thought of leadership I thought of power and authority. I usually associated leadership with one gaining power not always out of respect but usually force or seniority of some sort. After reading Leadership On The Line and the many ideas and lessons it presented I found that leadership involves a lot more than previously thought. Also the speech we heard from the man about servant leadership brought forth new ideas on how to lead and how respect is a very important aspect of leadership. The book Leadership On The Line talked about three basic things. The first was the challenge that leadership brings forth and how it affects you and the people you are trying to lead. Throughout the book the authors reference back to technical challenges and adaptive challenges repeatedly. They talk about how it is easier to be faced with technical challenges when your know-how and personal skills can help fix the problem. But the real challenge arises when you are faced with adaptive challenges. These challenges can not be fixed with everyday expertise and know-how, they need experimentation and new innovative ways to fix the problem. Adaptive challenges and the methods they involve are the root of many leadership problems. People who are faced with leaders who must …show more content…
This section is more about you than the people you are leading. The most important lesson I learned from this section was that you have to remember that you are not without your faults. You have to remember that although you are trying to show strength through leadership you can cause many problems yourself. Also in this section it talks about having confidants and a place for sanctuary. I believe these two things are very important if you are to remain sane during the ordeal. Having someone you can talk to and a place to relieve you stresses always helps in times of

Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky’s “Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive through the Dangers of Leading” describes the risks that every leader experiences at one point or another. It explains how no matter what level of leadership you’re in, whether it be leading a small organization or a nation, each leader has internal and external conflicts that they must overcome in order to “stay alive” as a leader. Heifetz and Linsky go through the dangers of leadership by separating the book into three distinct parts. The authors discuss in the first part why leadership is dangerous and how people manage to cave in to the pressure involved with leading. In the second part of the book, there are ideas for reducing the risk of failure…

Health care provision is the largest service economy in the United States and has an inherent servant nature. Transformation of health care organizations into learning organizations will occur only under the guidance of leaders who can amply demonstrate emotional intelligence and ethical behavior, as well as technical competencies. Furthermore, these characteristics modeled by leaders must be successfully transferred across the entire organization. Such leadership will move beyond transactional exchange to engender emotional commitment of the employees and stimulate intellectual capital. Competitive 21st-century health care firms will be characterized as adaptable, creative, relationship oriented, communicative, team driven, having flattened hierarchies, and able to retain employees and engender loyalty in customers.…

Fundamentally, servant leadership entails leaders being servants first. It starts off with a natural feeling that one wants to serve, and goes beyond one’s self interest, where leaders are genuinely concerned about serving their followers. Further, it also involves leaders not using their power to get things done but instead try to persuade and convince their followers. In this way, followers support their leaders and are motivated to become the very best they can become (Dierendonck, 2011). Indeed, servant leaders do care about the development of their employees and even share power.…

The over-arcing theme for each of the leader’s view of servant leadership is that servant leadership is about getting the focus off self and into a focus on stewardship through guidance, with attention, intention, awareness – of self and others – with a large dose of serving versus being served as a leader.…

Thank you for your post. I agree with you that servant leadership plays a vital role in being a nurse leader. According to Greenleaf, Senge, Covey, & Spears (2002), the principles of servant leadership include compassion, honesty, empathy, and serving others. As a nursing leader, I believe that the qualities of servant leadership are essential to the success of not only the department but of the organization. As you stated your chief nursing officer (CNO) possess several qualities of servant leadership principles; is it fair to say that through her encouragement and support, the nursing staff feel empowered and are engaged in thier position and roles within the organization? I also agree that personal values and beliefs provide…

Servant Leadership is a leadership practice and also a leadership philosophy. Servant leadership is a very distinctive style in leadership principles and it does go against the concept of “Me first”. In this paper, servant leadership is characterized by listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to growth, and community building (Spears, 2004). The servant leader as defined in Northouse: An approach to leadership, with strong altruistic and ethical overtones that ask and requires leaders to be attentive to the needs of their followers and empathize with them; they should take care of them by making sure they become healthier, wiser, freer, and more autonomous, so that they too can become servant leaders. The servant leader that I will be discussing in this paper is United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Sonia Sotomayor was nominated by President Barack Obama on August 8, 2009.…

The Servant Leader discusses the importance of leaders who adopt a service oriented attitude in which they care for the needs of others before their own. A servant leader need not be an actual servant or have ever been a servant to become a servant leader. Rather, a servant leader is born with or adopts an "others first" disposition. Climbing through the ranks may help to create a servant leader, though it is not necessary. When leaders choose to see that the needs of their followers or their organizations are the highest priority they become servants.…

Servant Leadership is often interpreted differently by anyone who has been interested in it. However, there are certain traits that are consistent in the definition and most people do agree that the main goal is to empower others. I believe one of my strongest characteristics would be listening and empathy. In my opinion, these two go hand in hand and should actually be considered one characteristic. I have always been a person that others could feel comfortable confiding in. I feel that the reason for this is that not only do I listen, I listen with empathy. In order to be a successful listener, I feel one must be able to show empathy to those they are speaking with. While my son was growing up, our house was the one that all of the kids would hang out at. As a result I was able to get to know all of them extremely well and they grew to realize that I could be trusted and really did care about all of them. I became the person they would confide in when they were unable to speak truthfully with their parents or anyone else. This became a common occurrence and I feel that I had a positive effect on their lives. While studying for my Master’s Degree, I did my thesis on “Drug and Alcohol Use Among High School Athletes”. Most of these kids were involved in sports and had been most of their lives. One part of my research was to survey high school students from various sports programs, ages, and schools. It was important to be able to obtain honest responses and I believe that my ability to build trust with them was a major reason for the success of my research. I did make sure that all of the surveys were confidential, however they were all more than willing to participate and from the answers I received, I believe they were extremely honest.…
