Septimus Gillian From 'One Thousand Dollars'
When I think about someone who was exceedengly selfish and careless, I think of Septimus Gillian from "One Thousand Dollars."
Gillian was always extraordinarily selfish until his uncle passed away and left him one thousand dollars.
For someone who was udderly careless and selfish, Gillian had a hard time spending the one thousand dollars which meant that he was actually thoughtful about future.
Gillian was extremely irresponsible and definetly not trustworthy when it came to spending money, in fact Gillian loved gambling which illustrated that he was one of the people that went to casino just to waste money by playing games. When it came to spending money, Gillian's actions were never about spending it wisely, saving it or helping others

In Lisa McMann's The Unwanteds many characters are used to weave a great story, each with their own motives and personality. Although there are many main characters in the book, two of the most important ones are Mr. Today and Alex Stowe. Marcus Today is the founder and leader of Artimé, a magical place of creativity. He is eccentric, creative, and cheerful, shown by his always garishly colorful clothing. Whenever he meets someone, he does it with a smile on his face, as shown on page 31 “Mr. Today, who had been gazing and smiling and taking in the sights of these new and wonderful people, watching their faces”.…

As Laurell K. Hamilton, a famous American fantasy writer, once said, “There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.” This quote directly applies to the little-dark-puppy-kicked-too-many-times character named Johnny Cade from S.E. Hinton’s timeless novel The Outsiders, who has both mental and physical scars from his horrific beating at the hands of the Socs -which not only linger upon his skin, but also penetrate his heart. In chapter two of this engaging and teen-centered novel, we dig deeper into the past of Johnny Cade’s life, thanks in part to a captivating first-person flashback from Johnny’s fellow Greaser, Ponyboy Curtis. While Ponyboy and his fresh friend Cherry Valance, a Soc…

Another example that illustrates that a selfish deed is not always bad is when Brother takes Doodle to the kitchen in the go-kart for breakfast. Towards the middle of the story, the narrator explains what happen when Brother and Doodle entered the kitchen. Brother said, “At breakfast on our chosen day, when Mama, Daddy, and aunt Nicey were in the dining room, I brought Doodle to the door in the go-cart just as usual and had them turn their backs… I helped Doodle up, and when he was standing alone I let them look” (5). That day at breakfast Brother wanted to show his parents and aunt what he accomplished, and that he would not let Doodle embarrass him anymore because he taught Doodle to walk. Then when his parents saw Doodle walk they couldn’t help but cry and hug Doodle for what he accomplished and Doodle told everyone that Brother taught him to walk and everyone hugged him and cried. The short story written by James Hurst “The Scarlet Ibis” demonstrates a selfish deed is not always…

The body lay in the vineyard, fully dressed in a sharp tailored suit, loose tie and polished shoes. Its hands, stiff with rigor, showed fingers digging deep into the earth. Investigator Louis Deville from the Violent Crimes Investigative Team took a moment to view the scene. Not the murder scene but the surrounding view from where he stood. The brisk November morning brought a blanket of mist across Seneca Lake. Crime presents itself everywhere, he thought. Even in the most serene of places.…

Quite often people seeking belonging see no ultimate value in money. Billy shows us this in the book when he buys Caitlin a ring immediately after receiving his pay. He feels he has no real desire to keep the money, despite the fact that he worked his ass off all weak to earn it. In his mind the work was to cure boredom, and he would much rather spend what was considered rightfully his on someone else; to show how much he really cares. In return this act of kindness towards Caitlin gave him a sense of belonging.…

People’s intentions are sometimes very unclear. It seems like they are doing one thing but are really have some other intention in the end. Like when you ***. In Loraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun, Walter Lee Younger is very similar in that aspect. He comes off very money hungry right from the beginning and seems somewhat selfish wanting to use his father’s insurance check. We can also see Walter lee is a very ambitious character but in the end, really just wants to provide for his family.…

Whenever Brother was being selfish, it was towards Doodle. For example, “When Doodle was five years old; I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn’t walk, so I set out to teach him.” Brother was obviously just being selfish when he offered to teach Doodle how to walk. He just did it so he wouldn’t have to be ashamed of having an invalid brother. That was an absolute sign of selfishness.…

An example is when he writes a letter to Peter about his life, including Hazel. He writes that many people like him want to leave a legacy, but leaving a legacy ends up leaving hurtful scars and spirals into something much bigger and corrupt. “Hazel is different. She walks lightly, old man. She walks lightly upon the earth. Hazel knows the truth: We’re as likely to hurt the universe as we are to help it, and we’re not likely to do either. People will say it’s sad that she leaves a lesser scar, that fewer remember her, that she was loved deeply but not widely. But it’s not sad, Van Houten. It’s triumphant. It’s heroic. Isn’t that the real heroism? Like the doctors say: First, do no harm” (Green 311). The letter continues how the real heroes are people who don’t do, but notice. This shows that Augustus is thoughtful of things in his life because realizes through his experience with Hazel, that leaving a legacy is pointless and a tad selfish if one causes harm, even if that person tries to leave a selfless legacy of helping the many things in our universe. Yet, it is admirable and brave to live a smaller, more humble life with fewer scars and to not be selfish to hurt others to gain anything whether fame, fortune, or again said, leaving a mark, scar, or legacy. Therefore, he is thoughtful of things in his life. In conclusion, in the book, The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green, thoughtful is what can be used to describe Augustus…

Tess' childhood is spent amongst a loving family and this is the reason why she is so inexperienced, which leads to tragedy in her life. Jane had faced hardships which made her more enduring, but unfortunately for Tess, she had no such experiences . Jane, having a good education was cleverer than Tess, who was poor and less educated and less intellectual. This shows the value of money in the past and its advantages and this money made people more greedy and discriminating. This is moreover proven in Tess' case as she is always in trouble due to lack of money and also by Jane's reduced state when she had no money after she fled Thornfield Hall. The advantage of money is with Jane and she too is the one who is happy in the end.…
