The path of the unsafe, independent thinker
Have you ever done something outside of your comfort zone to please the needs of someone else? Conformity is a dominate factor in everyday life. Although it is easy to follow the flow of conformity, solutions are hard to find. Fortunately, there are two sides to conformity. The positive side to conformity is it allows people to have a laid back mindset because they know someone will make the decision for them. But "the reward for conformity is that everyone likes you but yourself” - Rita Mae Brown
Growing up, conformity was never a factor in personal happiness .there was no trends to follow, everyone was equal and opinions didn't matter no changed how a person felt about themselves. But through the transition from a child to a young adult leading into adulthood, personal happiness went from being a priority to an option. Therefore changing ones thoughts and diminishing self-confidence. Currently, in society, we as humans tend to create a "perfect" person and strive to be like them. Although this person is a figment of imagination, because there is no perfect person , looking , acting, and being like this person engages how one feels about themselves. “Now I am a lake. A women bends over me, searching my reaches for what she really is. Then she turned to those liars, candles or the moon" this problem introduced in Mirror by Sylvia Plath is that humans tend to mask their true identity and strive to be a "perfect" person due to the pressures of society. In Emerson's self-reliance, an essay consisting of problems and remedies to conformity. Reading through to this essay Emerson states "let a man know his worth". (Paragraph 18 page 140). By this he means that no person should feel that they're not as important as someone else. Everyone has a set purpose in life, some people find their purpose quicker than others but that doesn't mean giving up and not maintaining self-confidence is the answer.

It is often said that conformity can be a horrible thing in today's society, but I have always believed that conformity was and can be a dangerous thing in life. In the article “Sociology of Leopard Man” the author Logan Feys states that, “Conformity can be seen as the world's most common but dangerous psychological disorder” (par. 6). In other words, he believes that being in a group surrounded by uniqueness is “unsafe” because we will not be able to think by ourselves and we as humans will follow the group and be a follower in life. Honestly it is a good thing we have uniqueness because we would all be doing the exact same thing and we need different people that can show us it is okay, without them we would all be thinking the same.…

Conformity is like a virus that you are bound to catch, and there is only one real cure. People conform to society because society has strength and power over us. People delude themselves into believing that majority is society. If someone’s views go against society then society will pounce upon them like a hungry lion to eat them alive. Rather than going against it, people follow along even if it isn’t always right. People must do what is right, but the question is what is right?…

Why are some people highly motivated than others? I think about this question often because I have some coworkers that are driven like myself whereas others lack ambition. I specifically chose articles that focused on psychological needs and individual differences within an organization because I wanted to understand the motives behind my behavior as well as the behavior of coworkers. In addition to this, I wanted to understand and know from a manager's perspective on how to shape a worker's attitude to enhance job satisfaction. Of course, the above statements have puzzled motivational scholars, psychologists, and individuals such as myself for many years, but I will examine these concerns in this paper.…

Some people are pressured to lose their identity to society’s demands everyday and this is called forcing one to become a conformist. They are coerced to act, look, and be a certain way to please the public eye. An example that can be seen easily these days are kids who wear the same style clothing as their friends, and behave a certain way to fit in with other kids even if they are not being true to themselves. This is because no one likes the feeling of being an outcast and lonely, so most tried their best to convince others to like their counterfeit personality. However, one should recognize the value of every imperfection and perfection aspect of themselves. Society tends to pressure people to change themselves due to the fact that there is too much pressure to fit in, which causes one to lose their individuality and become a…

    Why Do People Conform?

    • 1372 Words
    • 6 Pages

The causes of conformity among individuals have long been debated and researched in recent decades. It is for this reason that conformity is an intriguing psychological concept. It causes sound-minded individuals to go against their best judgement, to engage in behaviour which they usually would not engage in, even accept and welcome an idea they internally disagree with, all in order to not be a deviant from the group. It is thus interesting to look at the factors which cause people to conform, to do what they see others doing, to rely on the judgements of the group, and to ignore their own senses and perceptions. It is the reasons for the individual's desire to conform that I will be discussing in this paper.…
