Learning is a lifelong process; it is like a journey with different scenes to explore. From a good to great leader, I believe learning from others’ behaviors and rationale is the fundamental step to understand people dealing in different situation. However one said it might be more effective to learn from the mirror, by asking feedbacks and to improve myself by looking deep into my strength and weakness. This learning journal is interesting, I feel curious and a bit fear in confronting myself in new angles, but on the other hand I understand that it helps me to reflect on how my personal styles influence my interpersonal relationships, particularly in my role as a regional manager. In my working environment, I have to actively communicate with different front line managers both in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. I need to travel twice a week between two areas engaging me to deal with the cultural difference in leadership role. An examination of the literature gives me an idea that leaders are different from managers, Conger’s definition in leaders are individuals who establish direction for a working group of individuals, who gain commitment from these group members, and motivate them to achieve the directions’ outcomes. For me, I believe leadership is the alignment of a common team goal from a group of committed people, to achieve the target interactively within the agreed period of time. Although there are differences between leaders and managers(Kotter 1996), I as a manager aware the importance of self-awareness in relation to leadership, so I’ve choose to emphasis on examine the quiz results on ranking instrumental & terminal values, Rotters’ Locus of control; and the cognitive style instrument. These three quizzes review the core aspects of self-awareness in values, attitude towards change and the cognitive style of me.

I scored an eight in Self Awareness, eight in Relationship Management, and tens in both Self-Management and Social Awareness. From these results, I conclude that I need to learn more about my own emotions and develop confidence, so that I may then become a confident leader who can help others. These two quadrants of Self Awareness and Relationship Management work together, so these results make sense. For example, if I had to lead a department in an organization, and hid in my office everyday because I didn’t like public speaking, then I wouldn’t be a very effective leader. However, if I held daily morning meetings with my department, set forth the day’s goals, resolved conflicts, and gave motivational incentives to my employees, then my chances of being an effective leader are drastically…

The film Higher Learning is a call to action. It is a film that shows people as products of their environment. The film is set on a college campus, a place where most people learn about what they will do in their adult life to try to better the world or simply educate themselves in order to live a better life. However, life on the Columbus campus is not good; it is a battlefield between the races and sexes. I feel it is a bit exaggerated, but it allows people to see some of the issues that go on, on a college campus. The film focuses on three freshman (Malik, Kristen, & Remy) entering college. They enter a less than ideal new world that is filled with tension, anxiety and fear. Although the writer uses stereotypical characters, it is important to point out that although the character might be fictional; students like the ones portrayed in the film actually exist.…

The Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI) presents a series of questions in the areas of personal satisfaction, stress, effectiveness and quality of interpersonal relationships and then collates participant responses into a circumplex identifying 12 specific patterns or styles of thinking, behaving and interacting on a personal, management and leadership level--representing the essence of an individual's effectiveness. The circumplex provides a visual description of an individual's thinking and behavior and then compares results with those of other individuals who have taken the inventory in order to create self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses in order to create awareness of constructive behavior. The results plotted on the circumplex are divided into areas defined by higher order and lower order needs of satisfaction, security, task-centered and people-centered orientations. Within these spheres are 12 separate styles (humanistic-encouraging, affiliative, approval, conventional, dependent, avoidance, oppositional, power, competitive, perfectionist, achievement, and self-actualizing) which are subsequently grouped into three specific patterns: constructive (reflect self-enhancing thinking and behavior that contribute to one's level of satisfaction, ability to develop healthy relationships and work effectively with people, and proficiency at accomplishing tasks), Passive/defensive(represent self-protecting thinking and behavior that promote the fulfillment of security needs through interaction with people), and Aggressive/defensive(describe self-promoting thinking and behavior used to maintain status/position and fulfill security needs through task-related activities) (Human Synergistics International, 1987-2007.)…

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to counsel a character from your favorite movie? Have you ever wondered what approach you would use to try and solve their problems instead of watching it on television? As a mental health counselor, clients depend on us as their last hope for answers to the issues they may be dealing with. However, we don’t possess the answers but only solutions that can help a client themselves cope and deal with their issue. In this essay I will discuss what it is like to counsel the character Remy from the movie “Higher Learning” (Singleton, 1995). I will give an overview of the movie and character, the presenting issues of the character, my approach and role to counseling the character, and the characters cultural framework influence on why I chose to intervene to counsel him.…

In the summer of 1993, the Pepsi scare was one of the most widespread news stories in the entire country. This happened to be negative publicity for the Pepsi Company. There were cases being filed against Pepsi that there was syringes, needles, pins, screws, a crack cocaine vial, and even a bullet have been found in Diet Pepsi cans. The media would start to increase on this story as more reports would come in. “In one week’s time, more than 50 incidents had been reported to the police, the FDA or the media”. Pepsi was not sure of why these incidents were being reported. Pepsi had to research on why these claims were being made against their company. Pepsi was going to defend their company and not recall any of their products. Pepsi wanted to show the country that there was no possible way that these objects could end up in their products at the different factories. In this study there will be many different techniques the PepsiCo uses to explain to the country that this is impossible and these include: identifying the different publics, impact of communication on the public, the different PR communication tools and techniques, benefits and risks using these tools, how new technology would impact this case, and what is the companies status today in reference to this incident.…
