Self Harm
Self harm is a way of expressing and dealing with deep distress and emotional pain with the result of guilt and shame. As awful as it might sound to those who don't do it, hurting themselves makes them feel better. The only problem with self-harm is that it doesn't last for very long. It's like putting on a band aid when what you really need is stitches. The band aid stops the bleeding temporarilly but doesn't fix the problem and creates its own . I want you to close your eyes and imagine your daily routine going like this:
"You’re walking down the hall, and someone pushes you into the wall. Your first thought? ..Cut. You get home and your mom yells at you for not doing the dishes.
Another thought..Cut. After dinner what do you do? After dealing with your stressful family, or having a fight with a friend, or it was just…one of those day. You go to your room and you turn off your lights but you keep one light on so you can see what your doing. You get up to go to your dresser or wherever you keep it. You grab your box or bag and pull out the razors. Maybe you like to listen to music too. Maybe you have that special song. You hold the razor to your skin. You think about it for a few seconds..."Maybe I shouldn’t”. But then you realize that you know you need it. You slide the razor across your skin and watch as the blood slowly comes out. After a couple minutes of bleeding, you wipe the blood away and you put it back to your secret place, and get under the covers. You fall asleep, sometimes crying but your not sad or mad.
You really feel nothing but you fall asleep. The next day, you get up and take a shower.
The hot water against your fresh cuts kind of burn for a minute but then the pain goes away. You get out and dry off. But now its time to get dressed. You think about putting on a short sleeve shirt and maybe some shorts, but decide not to. You put on your long sleeve shirt, and jeans. You grab your stuff and leave

The rising prevalence of reports of individuals who have self-harmed, and the lack of an agreed-upon definition of what constitutes self-harm, led to the creation of the DHSI, or the Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory (Gratz, n.d.). The inventory does not include suicide attempts. drug usage, ingestion of objects and/or substances, or risky behaviors such as reckless driving. What this inventory considers self-harm is operationally defined as “the deliberate, direct destruction or alteration of body tissue without conscious suicidal intent, but resulting in injury severe enough for tissue damage (e.g., scarring) to occur” (Gratz,…

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (including suicide attempts and death by suicide) are commonly found at increased rates among individuals with psychiatric disorders, especially major depressive disorder, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, PTSD, anxiety, chemical dependency, and personality disorders (e.g., antisocial and borderline). A history of a suicide attempt is the strongest predictor of future suicide attempts, as well as death by suicide. Intentional self-harm (i.e., intentional self-injury without the expressed intent to die) is also associated with long-term risk for repeated attempts as well as death by suicide.…
