Self-esteem and Or/non-verbal Communication Difficulties
Describe the potential impact of speech, language and communication difficulties on the overall development of a child, both currently and in the longer term

Some children may have speech, language and communication difficulties that may affect their development, including their ability to communicate and interact effectively with others.
For example:
Autistic spectrum disorders, behavioural and/or emotional difficulties affecting the ability to process language, hearing impairment, physical disabilities affecting articulation of sounds.
The potential impact of the wide range of communication difficulties varies greatly from severe mental impairment to slight problems with social interaction. The potential effects on each child’s development depends on the severity of their speech, language and communication difficulties.
Children should always have plenty of opportunities to join in activities this is to express their opinions and to interact with other children. Practitioners should focus on each child as a unique person with individual strengths rather than focusing on the child’s particular difficulties. Always focus on what children can do and not what they can’t do. Potential short-term impact | Potential long-term impact | Difficulty in communicating and interacting effectively with others e.g. making friends Difficulty with the articulation of sounds Cannot articulate thoughts into words quickly enough Poor social skills Difficulties in using verbal and or/non-verbal communication Difficulties with structuring languageDifficulties understanding languageDifficulties using language Difficulties learning to read and write Difficulties in acquiring communicating skills Easily distracted and inattentive | Difficulty in relating to other people e.g. establishing and maintaining relationships Inability to understand the thoughts, feelings and needs of others Unable to express their own thoughts, feelings and needs effectively to others Social
