Lack of self-discipline A lack of self-discipline can be problematic to one’s education and career. However, most people don’t understand the true meaning of self-discipline. Therefore I will write this essay to paint a clear picture of what self-discipline is, and what measures one can take in having a lot more self-discipline. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines self-discipline as; correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement. Self-discipline is basically taking control of one’s conduct, usually for personal improvement. The reason a lack of self-discipline can be problematic to one’s education is because, instead of completing a required task you would rather be doing something else that is more enjoyable. For example, studying for exams or playing video games, finishing up a particular report or meeting with your friends, and exercising at the gym or watching television at home. Self-discipline is also similar to ‘self-control’ because you are basically controlling yourself to do something you don’t want to do. To become self-disciplined one must learn how to become the ‘disciple’ of themselves. To become a ‘disciple’ of your-self means to become responsible for your thoughts, actions, and maintaining self-control in doing so. A lack of self-discipline can be problematic to one’s career because, with absent leadership or bad perceptions things seem to get done half-assed. I mean if you see other people not performing tasks in the right or proper manner, you then get the perception of ‘if he doesn’t do it right’ than I don’t have to do it right. A prime example of this can be a friend that you work with not working to standard, and you then get the perception that since he did it I can do it. Another example can be in the absence of leadership, will you do the right thing? Or the thought of how much can I get away with? What it all boils down to is having the ability to make your-self do the right thing whether you feel like it or not, and without anyone telling you to get it done. This also consists with the ability of being able to control your feelings and overcoming your weaknesses and limitations. Despite the writing of this essay people will still find a way to argue their point that self-discipline is not the matter in their case. In any case I will now write some tips one may take in helping with the development of self-discipline. 1. Be clear on why you want to do the task. 2. Indentify the contexts or stimuli which lead to your decision. 3. Reinduce your desires by replicating the contexts. 4. Channel into your inner desires. In conclusion, a reader can use this essay to pre-determine whether they have any signs of lack of self-discipline, and what measures can be taken to help improve self-discipline.

    I have really excellent self management. I feel I manage my time and keep things organized very well.
