Self Control And Grit: A Literary Analysis
I’d like to think I have a lot of self-control and grit, but let’s be honest, I’m sure the rest of my class could say the same thing. Though many can attribute their hours spent tediously working on a task and call it grit, or stick with an idea and say it’s because they have self-control, what are these two ideals referring to? These traits that are necessary in every writer’s toolbox are key to producing successful pieces of work, yet have very different means of discourse. Grit is produced by using passion to magnify determination to sustain efforts on a difficult task in hopes of reaching a high goal. It stretches beyond the boundaries of one assignments and has been praised as being associated with lifetime educational attainment (Duckworth & Quinn 2009) and professional success (Baum & Locke 2204; Locke & Latham, 2013; Vallerand, Houlfort …show more content…
Since his establishment in the novel, he has been seen as a powerful tool in the fight against Nazism and evil as he is in the hands of people who are believed to be the protagonists. His very nature suggests competence of self-control as he differs from his devilish looking ways to make an impact in the fight against evil. Beginning with his adoption to the US Army, he became accustom to the morals of integrity that would help him withstand a long career in fighting for good in the world. Over the course of fifty years, his service with paranormal investigation tested and tried him until he became the best in his trade and faced his ultimate challenge at Cavendish Hall. His grit allowed him to literally save the world as he persevered to defeat frogs. His battle with these monstrosities proved Hellboy’s super hero qualities as his self-control brought him to the mansion and his grit enticed him to fight on despite the difficulties he faced as he got

    Through his many struggles, Ponyboy ultimately becomes a hero. His heroism helped him to decide right over wrong. His heroic decisions helped him stand by his friend’s side and help save kids from a burning church. Ponyboy shows extreme loyalty by sticking by his friend Johnny’s side when he killed Bob. He defies the law by going to Windrixville with Johnny to hide out from the cops instead of turning themselves in, but they eventually make the right decision to turn themselves in (pg. 56-87). He had two choices he could make; one he could risk his life by saving the kids or two he could just let the kids die in the church. At the end of the book Ponyboy chooses to help his friends fight in the rumble even though he is not feeling very well and is not in very good shape (pg.131-145). It could have been easy for Ponyboy to change any of the decisions he made, but he did not. So in the end the decisions Ponyboy ultimately made define him as the hero that he is.…
