Think of the world without music. Without it, there is no dancing, nothing to sing along to in the car, and life as we know it isn’t as fun. There is music for everyone. There is pop, latin, rock, jazz, hip-hop, country, and metal. With the large amount of music, there is a large amount of singers that provide us with the music that adds spice to our life. One of these singers was Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, or better known as Selena. She was one of the most influential hispanic musician, and she is still remembered today because of the tremendous effect she had on the world. Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was born April 16, 1971 (Selena Biography.com). She started out with music at a very young age. Her father, Abraham Jr., was a rock and roll artist that incorporated a Mexican influence. Selenas’ father owned a restaurant and they played there on weekends and for special events (Selena Biography notablebiographies.com). Her father was the main contributor when it came to songs and most of them were in Spanish. Selena was taught English as a first language and learning the songs in Spanish proved to be difficult at times. Playing at the family restaurant became very hard when it closed due to a recession. The family then moved to Corpus Christi, Texas for a fresh start. This is where they started recording and experimenting with different types of music, but mainly Tejano, which was dominated by men. At first, things were not going well. Finally, in 1989, Selena figured it out. She recorded “Buenos Amigos” and “Donde Quiero Que Estes” and they were huge hits. Selena had another huge hit, “Amor Prohibido” that went gold (Selena Biography.com). Her popularity grew and she was able to find love with a band mate.
