Seattle Prep Personal Statement
Fr. Pedro Arrupe meant that developing a willingness to put others before one’s self for the greater glory of God, AMDG, is the most important role of education. AMDG, a common Jesuit saying, – defined as “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam”, or rather, “all for the greater glory of God” – is a particular acronym taught in Jesuit education to remind scholars that everything they learn, think, and act does not have an impact on just individuals but it also plays a role in a much larger picture. Having the opportunity to attend a Jesuit college preparatory school has drilled the idea of becoming a man and woman for others into my brain. Seattle Prep, as well as other Jesuit institutions across the nation, is dedicated to its students becoming Graduates at Graduation: committed to justice, loving, intellectually competent, spiritually alive, and open to growth. When Fr. Arrupe said, “Our prime educational objective must be to form men and women for others, who believe that a love of self or of God which does not issue forth in justice for the …show more content…
Thirty of those fifty service hours are a mandatory aspect of the junior year curriculum and must involve work with either the poor or marginalized. Personally, I chose to complete my necessary hours with the organization Outdoors for All, specifically working with the marginalized. Outdoors for All (OFA) strives to enrich the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through outdoor recreation by offering programs just as skiing, kayaking, and biking. I participated in their downhill ski program, teaching lessons to people ranging from four to thirty-five years old with a vast array of both mental and physical disabilities. Volunteering with OFA improved not only my teaching skills but my ability to work with all people regardless of their

Spelman College’s motto, A Choice to Change the World, mirrors my goal as a member of this intellectual community. During my first year at this institution, I dedicated myself to several hours of community service. I found that this was a vital part of my intellectual growth as both a student and person within society. This year I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, however I dedicated most of my time to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Before volunteering for this organization I was not quite sure how I would be able to make a significant difference in my community. However, when I volunteered for this organization, I was able to tremendously help people in Atlanta. Likewise, this experience opened my eyes to the increasing…

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

Over the past summer I had the opportunity to go to Deep Impact in Shelby, North Carolina. Deep Impact is a mission camp that is run by The Baptist Men that gathers youth groups throughout the state to help the needy and to spread the Word of Jesus. There were different mission teams at the camp and I was placed on a construction team. On my construction team, we helped elderly and disabled people by building wheelchair ramps for them. The construction team had three supervisors, and they made the kids on the team do most of the work. We would do different kinds of work like digging out holes for posts, saw boarding, or screwing in decking boards. I really enjoyed this kind of work and it really made me feel good that when we finished, we were…

I remember when we hosted the Make a difference day event for Thurgood Marshall. It was a busy day for all of us. It was also a big event. There were a lot of vacant houses in that area. Our job was to make a list of the vacant houses and to measure it for board-ups. Measuring it took about a week. Lighting observation was a challenge for some of us because we had to wait till dark to find out which light works so that we can write down the address. Some people didn’t like how we were going around the same area multiple times because they didn’t know what we were trying to do. After that some of us had to drive around morning and afternoon to find out the most common routes that everyone takes to go and from school. I couldn’t participate in that because I had school the same time. On the big event day, we secured 10 vacant properties, cleared three blocks of trash, removed a block of graffiti from a vacant property, and created visible safe routes signs. We hit some rough patches on the way but we all worked together to overcome it. It was a very long and exhausting day but we all were happy because we all felt the joy of making a difference in the…

However, according to Sally Brown, volunteering brings these groups together and unites communities through bonding and “mutual understanding” (qtd. in Dykhuis 16). In fact, Pappas states that many youth volunteers get started in service work through church or school. Consequently, these closely knit programs encourage friendship and address areas of each community’s concern (Dykhuis 16). This allows communities to come together through a similar cause whether that be “illiteracy, teen pregnancy, high crime rates, or drug abuse” (Spiegel and Safrit 14). Due to the different opportunities for community service, volunteers are able to understand the barriers between affluent and limited resource areas and use their knowledge of these barriers for further personal and communal…

In the NY Times essay “The Very Long Road to Graduation” Ginia Bellafonte profiles the life and educational journey of a community college student named Vladimir de Jesus. Vladimir is currently attending LaGuardia Community College with great aspirations of bettering his life by attaining an associate’s degree and eventually earning his bachelors at Hunter College. Many Challenges in his life have hindered his progress, from the premature death of his mother to becoming a teenaged parent. Bellafonte has written her essay that at face value seems to indicate that de Jesus is a courageous and determined young man but I have to admit I’m skeptical. My skepticism stems from my no nonsense attitude and my own experiences with adversity with my educational journey which has not been easy for me either, my views of de Jesus are quite different.…

Over the weekend of November 5-6, myself and some fellow LEADStrong leaders had volunteer our weekend at the Villanova 28th Annual Special Olympics. The reason why I’ve chosen to do this as my service project because ever since I was high school I’ve always loving to arrive onto campus on cold early morning seeing all the smiling faces of everyone involved with the whole event just puts me a better mood because in the beginning it can be overwhelming. However, once the first hour passes you can’t help to feel like you are a part of something great that words cannot describe how fun this weekend truly is. While spending my service hours at the Special Olympics some of the jobs that was covered the course of the weekend included: proving the…

An educational philosophy is the tool that provides direction, and forms the conceptual structure for a school’s purpose and mission. Thomas Hopkins (1941) noted that “philosophy has entered into every important decision that has ever been made about curriculum, and teaching in the past, and will continue to be the basis of every important decision in the future…” (as cited in Ornstein, 2015). The fundamental and essential basis for my philosophy of Catholic education originated from a strong belief in a duty to serve God, and an understanding that each child is a unique gift from God, with individual needs, abilities and potential. This philosophy underlies the mission I adopted from the Diocese of Arlington, “to serve God by providing for the social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and academic development of each child,” while helping each child develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. As a Catholic school administrator, my philosophy of education reflects the desire to be a servant leader, dedicated to meeting individual student learning needs. In this way, student needs are put ahead of administrator or teacher needs.…

The PURPOSE is to recognize who engage in a high level (qualitatively and quantitatively) of service to the community by earning the opportunity to wear a service cord during senior graduation. Seniors completing the program will receive their service cord, be honored at the Awards Program in May, and re recognized on the graduation program. In addition, at the Awards Program in May, the student in each grade level completing the most hours during the previous 12 months will be recognized. HOURS Hours required are an average of 40 per year that the student is enrolled at George Ranch High School. The number of hours required is a total for the course of the high school experience. If a student earns 30 hours one year, 50 the next, 35 the next, and 45 the final year, the total is still 160, and the student will meet the minimum requirement of the Service Cord Program. Students are responsible for declaring their intent to participate in the program, and only hours earned after the declaration will count toward the required hours. Service hours from the summer are allowed if the Intent to Serve is signed and returned to the Student Service Window NO LATER than the end of the third week of school each year. All forms are available at the Student Service Window, Ms. Harmon’s classroom (1610), and on the George Ranch website. Students are responsible for returning all completed Service Hour Record forms to the Student Service Window. Student hours will be recorded and an update will be posted periodically during the year. In the case of misplaced information, the student is solely responsible for keeping personal copies for verification. Students are responsible for submitting their completed service hour forms in a timely manner according to the schedule given in the deadline section found below. GUIDELINES Students may not receive payment or compensation in any form for service performed. Hours performed…

The Special Academic Convocation showed me people who have lived their whole lives in service of others. Ateneo graduates who have made their school proud before the whole country because of the differences they've made. I realized from them that Ateneo is one of the top schools in the country not because its graduates can be found in the magazine's list of the top richest people but because their lives and works can be found in the progress of this country. They have spent a lifetime serving the people because as Edmundo F. Nolasco, one of the speakers, believe that there can be no greater expression of gratitude than to dedicate their lives to change the world for Christ except maybe to die fighting for a cause.…
