The Season that Changed My Life

I was a senior in high school. My final softball season had just begun. Our varsity team was the reigning state 6A state champions from the year before and we had very high hopes to win again. However, we were definitely an underdog according to all the preseason reports. The pressure was on for the Broken Arrow Lady Tigers. This would be the season that I changed the way I played softball and would make me work hard to achieve the goals I set for myself. As the season began, our high hopes were decreasing quickly. We had already lost more games than our whole season the year before. Our confidence was getting lower by the

As a team, we played each game with much more intensity and excitement. I found myself hitting the ball with much more focus and power. I hit my first varsity homerun bomb while in a tournament in Colorado. I was fired up for my team. After winning the remainder of our season games, and earning the title of conference champions, it was now time for the regional tournament. As a team, we were now much more confident in our abilities with ourselves and each other. We had a taste of victory and were hungry for more. It was the regional championship game and only the winner would advance to the state tournament. On that chilly October day, I took my place at the plate and as fate would have it, I bombed another one over the right field fence. That was just the confidence our team needed to win that game and become the regional champs. One week later, as our bus drove out of the parking lot headed for Oklahoma City; our stomachs were full of butterflies and anticipation. We were anxious to bring home another state championship to Broken Arrow. We thought our hopes were dashed when we lost our second game and went to the losers’ bracket. We regrouped and went on to win the next game. I set my mind to play my best and did my job as a senior leader to both hit well and play great defense at first base. After two more exciting, exhausting, nail-biting battles, the Broken Arrow

When I was in eighth grade one of my childhood dreams came true. I made the little league all-star team for the first time in my life. As I sat with the rest of the kids at the closing ceremonies of the regular season, I was not at all expecting my name to be called when the names of the select few players who made the all-star team were being announced. When they did call my name, I hesitated at first not knowing what to do. I was overcome by the awe of making the team. One of my friends told me to go up to the trophy stand where the coach of the all-star team was standing and accept my jersey, so I did. It took a while for it to really sink in that I had made the team, but when it did I was extremely delighted.…

And to finish up that inning we just got a couple ground balls and we turned a double play. And for the next few innings nothing really happened both teams were struggling to hit. Now it's like the 5th inning and we have the top of our hitting order up so we had:Liam,Luke,Ryan,Alex as our 1,2,3,4 hitters. And we got a rally going and we scored a couple runs so at this point the score is 5-1 and we have the lead so then I go into the 6th inning to pitch and I can only do ⅔ of the inning so than Ryan comes in and pitches and to finish out the 7th Alex pitches a 3 strikeout inning. So the game was over and the presedent of the league gave me the game ball to keep and bring home and everyone on our team got a trophy to take home after we won we were all so happy that we won the championship because it was or a lot of people the first time they won something. The…

Even though we didn’t win very many games, we always had fun. My coaches were amazing and always made it a great time. Our team was very close. We would hang out after games sometimes. At the end of the season we would have a game of the kids vs. the parents. It was always a great time. Slow pitch softball was my favorite sport i have ever played. It was never competitive or boring. After playing slow pitch for a couple years, i began playing fast pitch. It was a completely different experience. The coaches and players took it very seriously and it was competitive. We would have practice every day that we didn’t have games. We worked on every aspect of the game until we had it perfect. Even though i loved softball, it was not always enjoyable.…

Our second game was against the former coach for UNA, Jason Anderson. Coach Anderson was the original coach who offered me a scholarship to UNA. The tension was high, due to familiar faces. We ended up having to play them twice and we beat them both times. After winning all four games we reached the Championship series. Humbolt, from New York, was our biggest obstacle we had to face. The team with the best two out of three wins was to be named the National Champs. The first game we played, we lost to Humbolt. The loss hit us hard and our spirits were down. All season we had not faced a pitcher that shut us down completely. Walking to the locker room after that loss, felt as if we had already became runner up in the Championship series. Beating Humbolt twice the next day, seemed to be an impossible task. We sat in silence as tears ran down our faces. Our coaches let us cry and let us get our emotions out. She knew the pressure we felt and the adversity that was staring us in the face. After 30 minutes of silence, one of the players brought up the games we had to play against UAH. Another player mentioned the victory against Valdosta, and we were instantly reminded that we were capable of anything. We knew that all of the hard work we had put in was not going to waste. We were not going to settle for anything else but a National…

I was confined to the bench for most of my games and finished with no hits for the entire season. Teammates would cringe when they saw me step up to the plate. Instead of getting discouraged, I looked to the adversity for motivation. That summer I made the commitment to myself that I would turn Laurel baseball around.…

As I stepped out from inside the school into the biting cold air, I looked around for my teammates. I saw the team gathering beside the field and moved to join them. Anyone who saw me coming would have known it was me from a mile away, for I was easily recognizable. I had curly blond hair that flowed down over my eyes. In addition, despite being quite skinny, I towered over most of my teammates. I reached the mill of people on the pitch and spoke to a few of my teammates about the game ahead.…

In seventh grade I wanted to tryout for volleyball. I was very nervous because I had never played it before. I was super happy when I found out all my friends and I made the team. We had a lot of practices in December to get ready for games in January. I was really nervous for our first game. Our first game was supposed to be right after christmas break ended, but we had a snow day so it was cancelled. I wished it hadn’t been so I could just get it over with, but i was gonna have to wait. We were scheduled for another game later that week. I woke up with a phone ringing and an answering machine saying that school was cancelled due to boiler issues. I sat in bed thinking I had once again gotten lucky and we had no game, I was wrong. We were…

“Three minutes left!,” my coach yelled in a panic. It was the big game, we have been here all day fighting and dominating through our sweat and exhaustion for our chance at the championship game. My team and I gave everything we had on the field to get here but now it was time to test our limits and fight for the championship title.…

    The Four Seasons Essay

On 1st September, 1725, I attended a performance of “The Four Seasons”, a concerto by the Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi at the Pieta. The composer, often known locally as the “Red priest” (Heller, 1997) for his ostensibly red hair and ordainment, wrote the piece in 1723 in Mantua; Italy’s music sure seems to be increasing in its grandeur. However, I would doubt the sincerity of Vivaldi’s concertos; ever since Corelli these instrumental pieces are pumped out massively for the aristocracy (Michalik, 1998). However, I trust my colleague at Venice, who states the vivacious implementation of melodies are quite like no other person he’s seen in this style. Henceforth, I shall keep an open mind, as the use of solo instruments should be interesting…

I’m not normally a morning person, usually I can’t stand the heat of the sun beaming against my face as the rays sneak through the blinds the ruthlessly wake me up, but today was a different kind of morning. Right from the get go I knew this was no average day, my stomach was turning as my mind wandered. I was freaking out, my nerves were running like a thundering herd because I knew that today was different, today was the Regional Championship against Catholic Central. I woke up facing a harsh reality, win and continue playing hockey, lose and you have played your last meaningful game with all of your friends. That reality came with a crushing truth, my life for the last twelve years would either continue on as normal or it would face a dramatic truth that hockey was no longer going to be my everything. As nervous as I was, I was also anxious, I wanted nothing more than to end CC’s season and live to play another game with my best friends. I knew there was only one way to do this, I had to be a contributing member of the Spartans lineup, and I had to help my teammates bring the Shamrocks crumbling to their knees to suffer the agonizing pain of defeat.…
