The first thing that caught my eyes was the colorful and unique dance regalia or outfit worn by the dancers. Bright colors such as yellow, orange, red, and light blue wrapped around the dancers beautifully. The older looking male dancers were wearing the feather warbonnets on the head and bustles on the back. Dancers with striking multicolored beaded and fringed outfits were crowding the dance floor. Some of the female dancers dressed simple with their colorful fringed shawls. I noticed that some dancers even had bells attached to their ankles or dance outfits that they wore. I also was told that the feathers and leathers used were inherited from their father up to their great grandfather. The sight was so magnificent – it made me excited to stay for the show.…

However, for the sake of our future, there is strong importance in the need of these traditions endurance. Therefore, contemporary dance has the aptitude in defying these unjust cultural judgments. We see countless contemporary choreographers, today, merging momentous techniques of contemporary with traditional aspects of cultures; for unerringly that reason.…

Ballet “Cry” simply showed to us real life of all African women. Every single American people know what kind of life they went through. Therefore it touched their heard. Alvin Ailey’s “Cry” presented wonderfully combined movements, technique and emotion. Ms. Donna Wood uses tragic face, a mask of sorrow. It is a face born to cry, but when she smiles it is with an innocent radiance, joyfulness that simple and lovely. She never tries consciously to please an audience. He was not only concentrating in movements and physical performance, but also using flowing white gown with a long white scarf for the dancer. A long sleeve white blouse is slim, to show the dancers body. Especially her movement and technique. It made dance more interesting to audience. This beautiful piece of modern dance consists of three sections. Ms. Donna Wood performed solo dance for 16 minutes from section to section. Her ways through the dance are different in movement quality that she gives to each passage. In this tribute to black women, the free sprit or the African women comes through in the energy of her dancing.…

In attending Entrances and Exit presented by Grossmont colleges dance program, I found there to be many interesting routines. All of the performances were well put together, although there were a few times when I was just like “What?” Every performance I found to be dreadful was always followed by a performance that would grasp my attention again. There were a couple pieces that I found extremely magnificent like “My name is Sam” choreographed by Nancy Boskin-Mullen, “Toy Makers Can-Can” choreographed by Colleen Shipkowski, and “In the wild” choreographed by Melissa Aldo. Though, there were many entertaining performances, these three stood out to me the most because with all of them I found myself very engaged in the dance.…

This dance consisted of three men; all of them break dancers and krumpers, they formed a hip-hop number that made everyone stand up for applaud at the end. They all had different styles and show cased one another’s talents. The different moves they did defied gravity. From standing on their head and sliding, to jumping over one another. This dance was mainly displaying what each dancer could do. The different tricks they could do really impressed me, having know idea how they can do some of the stuff they do without breaking their necks. They all used the stage and definitely moved around frequently. It was an entertaining piece that made the audience pumped. They popped and locked everything on the base of the music, which made their movements look bigger. They worked together to pull off some surprising tricks like throwing one six feet in the air and were careful when they all jumped over each other at the same time. Their costumes were normal street clothes, which is appropriate for a hip-hop number. The sound was loud, had a high base, and could feel the vibrations under my seat, which makes the dance more exciting. They used many different colored lights on the stage and many visual effects were used, it was a crazy dance that matched the tricks they…

Attending the Spring Dance concert was a fun learning experience. I am glad that this was a required assignment for this dance class because if it was not required I am sure I would not have attended . The variety of dances have taught me different things, and one of them is that you do not have to do complex moves in order to dance. The dance I have decided to write about is Voicing Acceptance choreographed my Nancy Sorensen. There are many reasons why I have chosen to do my paper on this specific dance. I will discuss how the sound or movement, lighting, movement and females/males contribute to the overall success of the dance piece.…

When I thought of dance for the first time, I believed it was just simplistic movement and structured choreography. However, dance can be interpreted as a story versus just following a beat through its unique body language, musical composition, and set of props. The Fall Dance Theatre demonstrates these traits extensively within its performances specifically the pieces “In Sleep, We Dream” and “I’m Still with You”.…
