Scout's Lessons
In the novel to kill a mockingbird, there were many knowledgeable lessons to be learned. At the end of the novel, Scout thinks that “Jem and i would get grown but there wasn’t much else for us to learn”. Some of the important lessons that jem and scout learned from atticus defending tom robinson were that people could be rude and spiteful to someone with no reason behind it.They’ve also learnt that standing for what you believe in is always better than doing what others want you to.
People could be spiteful with little or no reason behind it. This is a lesson learned by scout, in the beginning of chapter nine, the novel states “Cecil Jacobs made me forget. He had announced in the schoolyard the day before that Scout Finch’s daddy defended

To help get his point across, atticus tells scout “You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat.”. This reveals that atticus is teaching scout that no matter what happens, she must stand and ground and to not let anybody push her around or try and sway her thinking. Secondly, another lesson that helped influenced scout, stated in eleventh paragraph ,“"You aren't really a nigger-lover, then, are you?"
"I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody... I'm hard put, sometimes—baby, it's never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn't hurt you."” Besides showing how people can be rude, this proves that atticus is able to stand his ground and stand in what he believes in. Atticus is also telling scout that despite what others may say about you, you must always try and treat people equally and with respect. To conclude, Scout and jem have learned many valuable lessons from atticus defense of tom robinson and the events surrounding it. They’ve learned to stand for what you truly believe in, that people can and will be crude and spiteful just because they do not agree with your opinions and that you must not let them sway your

Scout asks Atticus why he is going to defend Tom Robinsons case if everybody will be unhappy with him and he'll lose. Atticus replies, " They're certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions... but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience" (139). He is teaching Scout two lessons at once here. He is telling her that even though you were going to lose before you started, you have to be brave and try anyways. If Atticus didn't take this case and work for it, he couldn't live with himself because he would be cheating a black man to save himself. Also, he teaches Scout that following society is not always a good idea. Society has some evils in it and if nobody tried to make a change, they would never fall. Scout learns that this is something Atticus has to do and not to give up when you think you'll lose. In the end Atticus did change people's minds. He didn't truly lose. When Scout and Jem are told that they helped Ms Dubose overcome her morphine addiction, they still question Atticus why he wanted them to help. He says, "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" (149). He is telling them that Ms Dubose was…

Atticus is a white lawyer who lives in this racially prejudice town yet he is willing to stand up for a black man. A prime example of Atticus’ ability to help Scout mature is his advice and teaching Scout to not be judgmental of other people based on their appearance or actions. Atticus tells Scout, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 30) This quote teaches Scout a life lesson that changes her personality throughout the rest of the novel because Atticus is telling her to not be judgemental differs her from everyone else in Maycomb. Nobody in Maycomb considers a black person’s point of view. Everyone else is willing to judge people solely based on their skin color. On the other hand, Scout does not judge people and is accepting of everyone. Another example of Atticus providing Scout advice that influences her development is his reference to killing mockingbirds. “Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something…” Miss Maudie responds to Scout by saying “Your father’s right….Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy….but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill…

No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” (Lee 101) This is a quote mentioned by Atticus. This quote was mentioned when the Finch family was being made fn of due to Atticus’ defense of Tom Robinson. He told Scout that no matter what people say, because they are going to say some mean things, that Scout should not let it affect her. She should use her head and not her fists. I chose this quote because it is helpful to everyone. There are going to be times where people will make fun of you. However, you cannot let this get to you, as you know what is best for you. Atticus is not willing to let this get to him, and neither should anyone…

Atticus does, however, prove to be a very good father. Whenever someone talks badly about her father, Scout will stand up to them and sometimes even do it violently. Everyone in the town, it seems, makes fun of Atticus because of the black American he is defending. They feel that he is a disgrace to his family and to the rest of the town. However, Atticus never lets that get to him, and he doesn’t want it to get to Scout either. When Scout asks her father about all of the bad things people are saying about him and the trial, he says “You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change… it’s a good one, even if it does resist learning.” (101)…

That however, was just one life lesson Scout had to learn. The quote, “Never judge a book by its cover is quite similar to the quote that is needed for Scout to learn this life lesson. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. (Atticus, pg.30)” The life lesson and the meaning of the quote is that you should never assume, always be considerate, and try to feel someone else’s feelings. Scout had learned this when complaining to Atticus about her new teacher. Ms. Maudie also had part in this when she said, “Still think your father can’t do anything? Still ashamed of him? (Ms. Maudie, pg. 98)” In this situation, Scout is feeling ashamed that her father is not like the rest, until she learns Atticus was gifted with marksmanship, unlike some other men in Maycomb County.…
