The Most Influential Person in My Life

The most influential person in my life has been my grandpa, my abuelo. He just turned 88 years old and no one believes it. He looks and acts so much younger than his years.

My grandpa was born in Ecuador in 1922. He has seen many changes and adapted to all of them with ease. He was born in a little town called Manta. He left school at the age of 7 to help my great-grandfather in the fields. In between harvest he learned to read and write. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the Ecuadorian Navy, where he eventually was sent to Chicago, where he learned English, that helped him out eventually.

In 1968 he was already married and a father of 4, the oldest 8 and the youngest 2, that's when he decided to emigrate to the United States, alone, he settled in Brooklyn New York. In the Navy he has gotten his degree as a nurse's assistant, but when he arrived in the US, like so many immigrants before him, he took a manual job, washing dishes at the Hilton Hotel. In 1969 he had saved enough money to bring my grandmother, uncles and my mom over.

I have had multiple influential people in my life, but I'm not going to say my parents or a great teacher, but rather someone closer to my age. Andrew Calton, a good friend and great influence. Andrew helped me “get back on my feet” when I was scared to kayak. I would stay on the lake and not go on rivers because I had no confidence in myself. Late at night he and Jack White, another good friend, came to my cabin at camp and told me there was a spot on a trip and he wanted me to go. I went on the trip and the fact that they wanted me to go boosted my confidence. We went on harder rivers I had never been on and I did not swim, or bail out of by boat once.…

However, it was a rough start for my great-grandfather. The language barrier was a major obstacle and job options for foreigners were very limited; the only job available to him was working at a laundromat. 10 years later, my great-grandmother joined him in the United States. My great-grandmother was a very intelligent woman, and when she was finally able to contact her husband she settled in San Francisco, she was disappointed to discover him working such a low paying job. Many people say that I am a lot like my grandmother because she and I both have very similar personalities and characteristics.
