SCIENCE Reviewer
SKELETAL SYSTEM consists of all the bones in the body give the body support and shape - for movement and protection 2 MAIN PARTS:
1. AXIAL skeleton- bones in the HEAD and TRUNK - SUPPORT and PROTECTION SKULL : helmet-like case that protects the brain called CRANIUM * The BRAIN is the control center of the body. BACKBONE or SPINE: 26 irregularly-shaped bones called VERTEBRAE Each vertebra forms a ring. All the rings together form a hollow tube which ENCLOSES the SPINAL CORD. The curve in the lower part helps the body have an erect posture. STERNUM or BREASTBONE: long ,narrow , flatbone found at the middle of the chest ,attached to a cage of flat,curved bones called RIBS RIBS: encloses the heart and lungs ; 24 ribs in all 2. APPENDICULAR SKELETON: made up 126 bones SCAPULA or shoulder blade: flat and triangular CLAVICLES or collar bones: joins the shoulder blade ARM BONES: upper arm and lower arm (FOREARM) HIPBONE: bone just below the waist; forms a ring called the PELVIS. The pelvis surrounds some abdominal organs
LEG BONES: attached to the hip bone FEMUR – longest bone in the body KNEE BONE- bone between the upper and lower legs
*Altogether, there are 206 bones in the human adult. BONES make up the skeleton which is the framework of the body.
*The ear bones are the smallest bones in the body.
SKELETON: consists of all the bones in the body
AXIAL SKELETON: made up of the skull,breastbone,backbone and ribs SKULL : set of bones that protects the brain and eyes.CRANIUM- helmet like case of the skull that protects the brain BREAST BONE or STERNUM: bone where the ribs are attached BACK BONE or SPINAL COLUMN: set of bones stacked on top of one another to form a tube

    There are on average 206 individual bones in an adult human skeleton, which are both metabolically active and highly vascularised. Bones have many important roles within the human body, for example they provide structure and support for the fleshy tissue, protection of vital organs eg the brain in the cranial cavity, storage for vital materials eg calcium and phosphorus and also enables movement of the body as the bones provide a surface for ligament, muscles and tendons to attach to.
