    1. In different cultures, people have different traditions. Most of which seem pretty harmless, unless a virus is introduced amongst the population. In the film, the Ebola virus was spread unintentional in 3 main ways: handshaking, burial rituals, and selling and eating infected animal meat. When people greet each other in Zaire, a handshake is usually the method that is used. However with the Ebola outbreak, handshaking spread the virus too easily amongst the community. It is also custom to have a special burial ritual for those who die. In this ritual, a lot of people tend to touch the dead corpse exposing everyone to the virus. Since the virus was originally hosted in fruit bats and was then passed on to chimpanzees, gorillas, antelope, and even porcupines. Many of the meat in Zaire is hunted down, most the meet they eat are gorillas and bat meat, spreading the virus even more.…

Consider a very hot mug of coffee on the countertop of your kitchen. For discussion purposes, we will say that the cup of coffee has a temperature of 80°C and that the surroundings has a temperature of 26°C. What do you suppose will happen in this situation? I suspect that you know that the cup of coffee will gradually cool down over time. At 80°C, you wouldn't dare drink the coffee. Even the coffee mug will likely be too hot to touch. But over time, both the coffee mug and the coffee will cool down. Soon it will be at a drinkable temperature. And if you resist the temptation to drink the coffee, it will eventually reach room temperature. The coffee cools from 80°C to about 26°C. So what is happening over the course of time to cause the coffee to cool down? The answer to this question can be both macroscopic and particulate in nature. On the macroscopic level, we would say that the coffee and the mug are transferring heat to the surroundings. This transfer of heat occurs from the hot coffee and hot mug to the surrounding air. The fact that the coffee lowers its temperature is a sign that the average kinetic energy of its particles is decreasing. The coffee is losing energy. The mug is also lowering its temperature; the average kinetic energy of its particles is also decreasing. The mug is also losing energy. The energy that is lost by the coffee and the mug is being transferred to the colder surroundings. We refer to this transfer of energy from the coffee and the mug to the surrounding air and countertop as heat. In this sense, heat is simply the transfer of energy from a hot object to a colder object.…

The biophysical interactions between the hydrosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere and biosphere lead to diverse ecosystems. Through the interaction of the three nonliving spheres, the hydrosphere, lithosphere and atmosphere a variety of different conditions are created for the biosphere. Location of a ecosystem determines the characteristics of the nonliving spheres it is through their interaction that the foundations of an ecosystem are made. For example deserts are usually located between 20 and 30 degrees north and south of the equator. In these locations we find that the interaction between the hydrosphere and atmosphere lead to dry and extreme temperatures. The sandy soils in the desert mean water drains quickly leaving no water. The lack of water in these areas means there is no precipitation. Therefore there are no clouds that hold warmth from the day through the night slightly. Water also acts as a moderator of temperature as it warms and cools slowly, as there is very little water the desert has high daytime temperatures and cold nights. Due to the hardy climate there is little biodiversity in the desert. Plants and organisms must adapt to suit the conditions. Widely scattered shrubs and water conserving plants are found in these areas.…

In my house there are several rooms and spaces that vary in use. There is the main living room that is where most social interaction takes place. There is plenty of seating for everybody in the house as well as guests, and there are several forms of entertainment. A lot of social interaction also takes place in the main kitchen, it is where we cook, eat, and often times just hang out. In the warmer seasons the outside porch is also a popular spot to have social interaction. Some of the more private areas in the house include bedrooms and bathrooms. The bathrooms are private for obvious reasons, and the bedrooms are spaces that are used mainly for sleeping or studying.…
