Science influences what we eat
Science and technology affect people’s everyday activities. As the world population is dramatically increasing, more food is needed to be produced due to the people’s enormous consumption. Therefore, science plays a crucial role in producing and examining nearly all most kinds of food. However, the influence of science on food is not always a good thing. Science can lead to making wrong decisions on kinds of food people buy, influencing the way people eat and producing more artificial food which contributes to making people unhealthy.
Food manufacturers are now producing many different kinds of food. People find it really hard to make any decisions to buy food products whenever they visit markets or supermarkets. Of course, there are many choices to one type of food product, and shoppers do not know which is better than another. For instance, milk product can be found in many different brands, sizes and flavours. Some of those products can sometimes be misleading since they are not manufactured in the standard way. As a result, too many choices of food make people confusing.
Because science influences the way people ingest, more and more people believe in scientific food studies. So far scientists have done a lot of studies on each single vegetable and fruit, and they discovered many useful components in them which make people healthy. Plus, the results of the studies are often spread out through the media, and people follow. However, they can sometimes be confusing. The result of different research about the same food can be completely contrasting.
Furthermore, most people nowadays do not eat real food. The foods they consume are kinds of artificial ones. Coke is an example. Coke cannot be forgotten in nearly all meals. Despite the negative effects on people health, people cannot stop drinking cokes for their refreshment. Apparent in the audience of his lectures on the decline of farming, American citizens are unable to recognize the existence of food beyond the food industry—the world of fake, processed food.     When Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma was published, many readers began questioning him for advice on what they should eat in order to stay healthy. In his more recent book, In Defense of Food, he responds with three rules, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants"(Pollan 1). This seven word response seems too simple for a relatively complicated question, but as he further elaborates these rules into specific guidelines, this summary turns out to be surprisingly complete. Using inductive and deductive reasoning, he debunks the ideas behind nutritionism and food science, and proves that the western diet is the cause for food related diseases. Inductive reasoning is when a general conclusion is drawn based off observations, and deductive reasoning is when specific conclusion is drawn based on general concepts (Griffith 269-270). In Michael Pollan's book, In Defense of Food, his reasoning is sound because he makes strong inductive and deductive arguments which are supported by studies and research from credible sources.…

    Reading Michael Pollan’s book In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto has surprisingly helped me in becoming a better consumer and to make healthier choices in what I eat on a regular basis. As the title suggests, throughout the book the author tries to get the reader to take common sense approaches in improving the way they eat. The main argument he points out is that having science incorporated into the way we eat (especially the additives and chemicals put into foods) has vastly decreased the quality of our food and increased diseases and health complications in America.
