Science Fiction Short Story Opening
The uprising

prelude
Let me take you to a time… A time so long ago even man failed to exist. There were no countries like England, China and Russia, just a large district. It was known as Pangea by the animals. It was considered as a forbidden area by them 13 Districts, which contained the most vicious, vile, abominable creatures which were not known to man until they were tamed and captured by 13 men. These men were named the Eidolon and each owned one district to themselves but with great power came great responsibility and for some – this was too large of a task.
Snake Forall marched his army throughout all of District 3. He grinned, “yesterday District 6, today District 3, tomorrow…only I know” he thought to himself

A small, fragile man appeared by his side - “Sir, there are 6 casualties, 26435 deaths and we have Jet Rolendo on standby, his condition… stable” he shouted, due to the stamping in the background.

Jeff Rolendo – the 3rd member of the Eidolon and known best for his age and wisdom. Jeff was the only member of the Eidolon who had lived up to the age of 96 and had reined District 3 since the day it was found. Unfortunately, for Jeff, it was that he would not be able to rule District 3 for any longer.
Jeff swivelled his head… black. Jeff looked into the other direction…black. The pitch was silent – so silent Jeff could hear his own heart beating. He tried to move but in vain, his hands and feet were tied. To a chair, perhaps? Then, a light. The light came as a shock, and burned Jeff’s eyes, but as he flickered his eyes and it became dimmer. He looked at his surroundings; there was nothing but a stick on the floor, the dark, damp floor which looked like it had a thousand tales to tell. He looked up – stone. The floor and ceiling were made out of stone, which made Jeff snigger, “probably so no-one escapes” thought Jeff Snake Forall kicked open through the door. He sniggered and grabbed Jeff – “you really think you can stop me?”

Sammy would always walk the long way home from school to avoid Billy and his gang who would throw rocks at him. He walked this way because it was past a large old house, and all of the other kids were scared of it. The House was two stories tall with a peaked roof that had holes in it. The High school kids had written graffiti on the sides, and the windows were all but shards of glass. The white paint was peeling off and the gray wood appeared behind it. The door to enter was open, and it seemed to look like a black hole, the shrubs and grass were so over grown they covered the bottom half of the house with all but the door covered.…

William sighed happily at the solitude he greatly enjoyed in the mindscape. He quietly hummed to himself. Ever since his brother was busy tormenting some new puppet of his named Dipper Pines, (or as he called him, Pinetree) it has been quiet. The silence never tore into him. In fact, talking tore into the young demon more than the silence. His thoughts were interrupted by black void surrounding him. He looks around, startled. He had no idea what was going on and this had never happened before. He saw a flash of pale yellow light, almost white and felt himself being pulled towards it. He heard voices the more he was pulled.…

The saga of old Geo. Ochenski continues. As Geo. sat on his rock, watching the Cadillac, getting smaller and smaller, until it was just a dot on the horizon before it disappeared over the hilltop. He sat there for some time, with his head in his hands. Contemplating, about what the elderly gentleman had said. As wheels of the mind began to turn the gears of thought, 'old Geo could almost hear them groan' from lack of usage. Suddenly the old 25 watt incandescent light bulb, lite up. Somewhere in the dark shadowy corners of his mind, stirred an almost unheard of phenomenal, reasoning was taking place. In panic Geo almost shelved it in disbelief. Slowly, oh so very slowly it came to the front of his mind. But, in the dim light of the 25 watt bulb, Geo was unable to understand it. Geo shook his head, in an effort to clear it. But, as with most things, Geo tried to do, it ended in failure. In shaking his head, Geo had accidentally turned on, the other 25 watt bulb on the right side of his brain, which he almost never used. As the light became brighter, Geo was slowly able to make out the printing in bold red, black and blue crayon, the words on the jello (sic) paper he was holding. It said, in bold…

In Michael Waters’ poem, “The Mystery of the Caves”, two stories are told: one of a boy lost in a cave, and one of the narrator’s household of domestic violence. The narrator submerges themself in the story of the lost boy, trying to escape from the reality of their home. Through ambiguity of language, Michael Waters’ use of images and symbols blurs the lines between the two stories, and ultimately tells a tale of of how a failed mission can cause anguish within an individual.…

It is undeniable that Plato has influenced generations and civilizations long after his life. Plato has inspired countless philosophers, writers, poets and intellectuals. Specifically, Plato inspired Andrew Niccol to write the script for The Truman Show based on The Allegory of the Cave. The Truman Show puts a modern twist on the Allegory: a young man Truman is unknowingly the subject of a reality show where everyone he has ever known is an actor. He has no idea that everyone and everything he has ever known: his family, friends, job and even the island on which he resides was created by the show’s director, Christof. Truman’s journey to discovering the reality of his situation closely parallels The Allegory of the Cave.…

As her eyes adjusted to the ghostly blue light of the waning full moon, she began to see the room. The walls were marble, speckled with peach swirls; she'd always found it odd, considering the rest of the make up of the building was limestone and granite. She paused at the stray thought Her mind didn’t bother to explain her how she knew the dark streaks in the marble were peach nor did it bother to inform her how she knew it was marble she was looking at. These things were fact to her and couldn't be disputed.…
