Science and Man
The TV alarm switches on automatically in the morning belting our breaking news that stirs me out of my slumber. I lazily go about my ablutions, the electric shaver, and a hot water bath followed by steaming hot coffee from the percolator. My cornflakes and breakfast are ready within a minute thanks to the microwave oven! Without a thought to spare I am a slave to the inventories of science.
Be it the flicks of a light switch, the oscillation of the ceiling fan, the automobile I drive in are all the boon of science that has made life easier to live in. One needn't go all the way to a pilgrimage to pay ones tributes. Today it's done on-line by our personal computer. Be it booking of travel tickets, paying of bills, sharing a comfortable conversation with a friend in another city or country, science has given it all to man.
Innovations in transport and communication have shrunk global boundaries making it easier to communicate within no time. Rivers are harnessed by dams, hydel electricity being generated. Food grains are grown self-sufficiently by reducing the risk of pests and diseases with drought control. Textiles are produced with much modernization bringing a revolution in fashion and designer wear.
Scientific remote sensing predicts weather modulations more accurately thus giving us a timely warning of earthquakes, floods and tornadoes. Cultural exchange has become possible, where one can listen to Pundit Ravi Shankar's recital in London or anywhere in the world with the flick on a TV remote or even listen to Michael Jackson back here in India. Tabla maestro Zakir Husain can delight viewers sitting in their drawing rooms all over the globe.
The heads of nations may even conduct political affairs, formulate policies and process their execution whilst away from their national capital. He may be in a remote rural area but never once away from matters of state thanks to science. There are tractors to till the land, pumps to irrigate it, fertilizers to increase

Agricultural as a whole was given a jolt, when the plow was invented. This changed the way the agriculture field produced to meet the growing demands of larger populations by increasing the yields. Transportation capabilities in the 18th century were given a boost with the unavailing of the first steam engine. People and materials were able to be transported across larger distances at record speeds. Again meeting the demands of an increasingly growing population. Transitioning from hunting/gathering mode to a pastoral society changed by abandoning previous migratory practices in favor of establishing fixed residences. This led to plants and animals becoming domesticated to conform to the new “home=based” needs of people. Lastly, computers have most recently changed the societal course in mostly every way possible. To a great extent, however, the human sciences do encompass natural facts and are based on knowledge of nature. If one were to imagine purely spiritual beings in a realm of persons which consisted only of such beings, then their coming-to-be, preservation, and development, as well as their extinction - whatever representations we may form of the background from which these beings appear and into which they disappear - would be dependent on purely spiritual conditions. Their well-being would be based on their relation to a world of spirit, their contact with each other and their interactions would be effected through purely mental means, and the lasting effects of their actions would be of a purely spiritual sort. Even their disappearance from the realm of persons would be grounded in the spiritual sphere. The system of such individuals would be known by pure sciences of spirit. In reality, however, an individual comes into being, survives, and develops on the basis of the functions of an animal organism and its connections to his natural environment. His feeling of life is, at least partly, based on these natural functions; his impressions are conditioned by his sense organs and the way they are affected by the external world. We find that the abundance and liveliness of his representations, the strength and direction of his acts of will, are in many ways dependent on changing conditions within his nervous system. His volitional impulses induce contractions in the muscle fibers when effect directed outwards is bound to molecular changes in his body; lasting results of his acts of will exist only in the form of changes in the material world. Thus the mental life of a man is part of the psychophysical life-unit which is the form in which human existence and human life are manifested. Only by means of abstraction is mental life separable from that psychophysical life-unit. The system of these life-units…

The term ‘science’ has many different definitions and components that are used to define the term. Most people however can all agree that science is gathered knowledge about the universe through observations and experimentations. When I think of the word ‘science’ I think of men in white laboratory coats with wild hair going in every-which direction and carrying beaker glasses full of liquids that have smoke coming out of the top. Now what I just described is more of the mad scientist look but the truth is is that there are countless individuals in this world that either work in a pharmaceutical company, some large corporation, or just a high school science lab, all of which dress and perform experiments in this way. The point I’m trying to make is that scientists come in all different shapes and sizes. One does not have to go to a prestigious university to have to become a scientist, although it is helpful. If I wanted a first hand account of what science was then my first step would be to think of a prompt for argument. Say, for example, I was to believe that red-shelled M&Ms were thicker and stronger than blue-shelled M&Ms and I wanted to find a way to test this theory. First of all I would have to gather some M&Ms for the experiment. Next, I would place a single M&M at a time in between a pair of tweezers that had a pressure bar attached to see how much force is being applied everything the tweezers close and the shell begins to crack. After doing this experiment over and over until I felt confident I had a large enough sample size, I concluded that the blue-shelled M&Ms were stronger than the red. Now say over people get the same idea as me and try the same exact procedure out as well. If their findings prove to match up with mine, and were talking trial after trial, and every single person keeps getting the same results as me, my findings can be turned into a law or rule.…

It is a natural tendency for humans to seek for patterns to explain how and why certain things work. However, the fact that the universe has infinite complexity makes it beyond our abilities to make sense out of it; this is why we employ mapmaking to break things down to get us closer to the reality ‘out there’.…
