Schools Out For Summer By Anna Quindlen Summary
AMERICA'S FOOD CRISIS
How would you feel if you couldn't afford to feed your kids? Wouldn't you feel like a failure? I know I would. In Anna Quindlen's essay “Schools out for summer” she writes about the struggle that is putting a meal on the table for your kids and how many kids' parents depended on school to put a meal in their child's stomach. She also says we need to step up and take action on the matter rather than basically look past it. But how effective was Anna in her essay?

“Some kids don't get enough to eat, no matter what people want to tell themselves” when Anna said This she didn't just make an opinion, she backed it up with facts that will probably get the attention of people who are concerned about the matter. During the school

food bank reports that most of their clients are minimum wage workers who can't afford enough to eat off of their salaries. Can people really live off of minimum wage? Especially if it is a parent who has two or more kids?

“For a significant number of Americans, the cost of an additional meal for two school-age children for the eight weeks of summer vacation seems like a small fortune”. this really makes me sad simply for the fact that some people are really hard times right now. some parents struggle and don't seek help simply because of the perceived stigma or sign of shame or disgrace. But I believe that no matter what happens later on in life I will do everything in my power to put a meal in my child's stomach.

In conclusion, Anna Quindlen was very effective on her argument. She made good indications and she backed it up with evidence, statistics, and facts. She also drew emotion and emotion is what gets people to really open up and listen to a subject. All In all anna's argument was very persuasive and will almost definitely get something done about the matter at hand. All i know is I don't want the children of our great nation hungry what will you do to help hinder this from

In Lynda Barry’s essay “The Sanctuary of School” she talks about how her school taught her how to “build a life preserver that she could carry home”. This statement at first glance seems extremely ambiguous but if you look at it carefully it is only slightly ambiguous While this statement is ambiguous I believe it means that school taught her how to find or make something good in her hectic life that helped make life worth living and that she was able to take her love of drawing home and even do it there.…

On the other hand the weakness of Jamie Oliver’s approach is that many children don’t eat school dinners because of his healthy campaign but buy junk food from local shop. According to Prue Leith, the restaurateur and former Government food advisor, has said Jamie Oliver's school dinners campaign inadvertently drove children away from school meals to less healthy packed lunches Stats shows 60% are sent to school with packed lunches and 13% still buy their lunch from a shop or vending machine. Also some parents pass their children fast food through the railings of their children school. In addition a 2009 study shows the number of children taking school…

Have you ever had to wonder where your next meal was coming from, if you were going to get anything to eat at all that day? Well there are many families and various people of all ages and races who experience this tragic, from day to day. I had the opportunity to help families and people without a family cope with this tragic. For my service learning project I helped out at the Raleigh Rescue Mission, Which is “Hope for the Poor and Homeless.” During my time at the Raleigh Rescue Mission, I helped prepare and serve the homeless. We served various families and those single, spaghetti and meatballs with bread, a salad and a cup of water or punch. Being able to speak with the people and react with them they really expressed how thankful…

In Michelle Obama’s speech “Remarks to the NAACP National Convention,” she laments that childhood obesity is a serious issue in America today, back when she was young children were always out playing and being active, nowadays children would rather sit inside and play video games then do anything else. Since most children are seldom most of the time and spend hours upon hours watching television “every extra hour of TV they watch is associated with the consumption of an additional 167 calories.” (423). Children aren’t just becoming lazier, they’re actually becoming more and more unhealthy as time goes on developing “diabetes and cancer, heart disease, asthma.” (420). In an effort to try and help fix childhood obesity Obama launched the “Let’s Move” campaign, which even features commercials on Disney Channel showing the Disney celebrities outside playing some kind of physical activity. The four main points to this campaign are; The first one consists of giving parents knowledge to give their children healthy food not fast food. The second point states that the government is attempting to replace fatty foods in schools with healthier options, regardless of how the children will feel about it. The third part of the campaign is just trying to show children that being active actually is fun, it doesn’t just have to be challenging. The final point Obamas’ campaign states is that all families no matter what their income is, wealthy or struggling, should have the ability to get fresh and healthy food without breaking the bank.…

Imagine trying to make yourself lunch everyday using only $2.95 This is what schools are forced to do on a daily basis in order to feed thousands of children. Schools have to be able to create a lunch for children that will satisfy their hunger, using only almost $3 per child. How can we expect our children to be getting the proper and nutritional food with such a small budget? Why aren't we doing more to to make sure the kids in our country are eating healthy meals while away from home? How can we make sure the students will react positive to healthier school lunches after being exposed to such unhealthy food for so long? There are so many questions to be asked and many answers to be given. I think we need to focus more attention on this dilemma because these kids are our future, and we need to make sure our future is as healthy physically and mentally as can be. (Cavendish) I think that if you want to keep your child safe, then don’t give them money for food at school, don’t even give them money for the extras you can buy later on throughout the years of schooling. The best way to keep your kid safe is to not give them money, or even try to convince them not to eat school lunch and try not to get it in any way. Some parents think that if their child goes to school and eats the lunch there, then their child will be as healthy as can be since schools have to follow the rules. Others even say that it is better to eat at school because some don’t have food provided at home for them. " The United States is the richest country in the world, and yet 11 percent of U.S. households are "food insecure," meaning…

Have you ever walked through parts of life then suddenly one day you realize what you were doing could have been detrimental to yourself all along? Most of the time you won’t even realize what you had been doing was wrong until somebody points it out to you, or you look in the mirror one day, and it hits you. This is my story about the realization of what could have been the stereotypical American health problem for many children in this country today. We’ve all seen this play out, the kids with the monstrous bellies opening their new toy from a McDonald’s happy meal. Looking back, I would have never known it was going to shape such a large part of who I am today. Inside the blue walls of Thornydale Elementary was where I realized I was becoming an America’s poster child for the war against childhood obesity. First lady Michelle Obama would have been paralyzed with fear for the rest of her days had she spent one day with me back when.…

A child will not starve his or herself just because he or she does not want to eat when you want them to. There is also the factor of sugar in the diet. Children are exposed to more sweets than fruits and vegetables. The biggest thing is that children spend more time eating fast foods than a well-balanced meal. I want to make the parents see that this is their responsibility. Maybe putting the pressure on parents now will be the first step in emphasizing prevention in our health care system. If parents can’t lead by example, then children are only going to take on their parents unhealthy habits. I want parents to admit that their children have a problem and take the necessary steps to correct this problem. I have seen so many overweight children in the last 2 years that it breaks my heart. Parents are going to have to be more active in helping prevent obesity among their children. Children need role models and this starts with the…

School lunch is an issue in schools throughout our country. Many parents, teachers, as well as students tried to tackle this problem; but it still remains an issue. Dana Woldow, who’s been involved with this school lunch problem since 2002 once said to congress “Try school cafeteria food in your district. Then see if you continue to make the same decisions about how you fund the program.”(Dana Woldow) Schools serve lunches that lack all the nutrients we need as children for your typical breakfast and lunch. Children in school should be served freshly cooked meals, but are served pre-cooked re-heated meals. Nearly all schools have vending machines or snack bars; the snacks available are chips, cookies, sodas, pizza, etc. Students are surrounded by unhealthy food options. Every child has to eat at some point throughout the day, if you’re not packing your child’s meals they are bound to fall into the unhealthy food choices.…

What is your take about schools serving the students high calories, high fat, and low nutrition meal? When we drop off our children at school, we are under the impression that they are in good hands and receiving a good education. Nevertheless, are the schools negatively affecting the development of the students with unhealthy processed meals? Prepackaged, frozen meals, high in calories, and low in nutrition such as cheeseburgers, pizza, and chicken nuggets are some of the meals our children are eating nine months out of the year. In my child’s school menu, “Taconada” is served on three separate times this month. My child could not describe it nor does she like it. Nutritional deficiency in school meals has affected students’ academic performance, health, and emotional development; this problem can be solved by implementing a school garden and a mandatory nutrition education.…

People in the world are faced with many health problems because they are not feeding themselves right, not being provided the nutrition they need for their body to strive. Mrs. Obama making it a priority to start enforcing good healthy diets at a young age, and she is right for practice makes perfect. Getting a kid to eat vegetables is hard enough, using one of her daughters as an example; not wanting to eat tomatoes. But once Sasha created her own concoction, she finds herself enjoying the red veggies this being one of the things parents should start involving their kids with, cooking. Not only are they learning to cook at the least but in a healthy manner and having fun at the same time too. Making healthy home cooked meals can also be seen as cheaper in cost for getting more of a bargain from the buck and extra food can be eaten as leftovers too adding to the savings and just maybe those can help other children who cannot afford the food they need, making a healthier world.…
