Schools should be year-round because of many factors like the fact that year-round schooling can generate strong feelings. A 1994 report, “Prisoners of Time,” argued that “a departure from the traditional school calendar could better meet the needs of contemporary society and result in increased student achievement.” Research has also shown that year-round schooling does have an effective on students. Reviews of existing literature on this subject generally contend that the achievement of children in year-round schools is as good as, or slightly better than, that of their peers in traditional schools (Palmer & Bemis, 1999; Kneese, 1996). Another example would be a study on six elementary schools where year-round schools posted overall-test-score increases that was higher than those of traditional schools (Kneese, 2000). One of the major benefits of year-round school is that it aids students in a way that they can increase their overall grade. Students are less likely to forget what they have previously learned in school due to the lack of large breaks in the school year. Most importantly, there is more time. Extra staff and transportation may be needed which therefore makes the price skyrocket. There is also an increase in administrative costs for new creating the schedules. Operation costs increase because of the higher use of air conditioning during the summer. In “Counterpoint: Year-Round School Causes More Problems than it Resolves” it says “Although YRS programs have not been shown to significantly improve academic achievement, they do add to costs. Schools north of the Mason Dixon line often do not have air conditioning. They do not need it on a conventional schedule, but they do on a year-round schedule. Other costs include extra burdens on administration, facilities upkeep, and possible extra costs to keep cafeterias and school buses running throughout the year.” (Pearson) As stated in the Article there is a lot to pay for and it is not good for those who are already on a financial budget, it just causes more problems for the family that the student is part of. Not to mention, summer camp/childcare would be less expensive at this point if the parents of students have to pay all that money to the School. In the article “Point: The Benefits of Year-Round Education” it says “The shorter vacations provided by year-round education and intersession class opportunities during the short vacations (often a less-expensive alternative to childcare or summer camp) are helpful to today's working parents. Additionally, parents and teachers enjoy the option to schedule vacations during off-seasons, when travel costs are lower and many destinations are…
