School Start Later Essay
Many students across the U.S. are complaining because they need more sleep. There is an easy answer to this and a harder answer that would cost more money. The easy answer is go to sleep earlier. The harder answer would be to change school start times. I believe that we should just go to sleep earlier. This is because we would not have to change schedules, Students aren´t guaranteed to go to sleep at the same time , and after school activities would not have to go into the night. Firstly, changing the school start time would cause schedules to have to change. As Justin O'neill says in his article ¨should schools start later?¨ ¨School bus schedules are arranged not just the needs of not just one school but all the schools in a district...¨ …show more content…
If we were to change start times we would also have to change the stop time. When the extra-curricular activities go later into the night athletes may get tired during practice. Sarah Mckibben´s article also says ¨⅔ of high school students get less than 7 hours of sleep¨ This may not change for some students with extracurricular activities. The homework would also have to be done later in the night. I agree that teens need more sleep, however, I also believe that Changing start times isn't the way to get more sleep. According to Terra Ziporyn Snider, executive director of the national coalition Start School Later, the issue is a ¨political hot potato¨ For several good reasons this is true. There would be much money spent on something we are not even sure would help. And also some bus drivers would have to move. And those aren't all the reasons. while there may be reason to change the start times I believe that some of the benefits are trivial. The main reasons we should keep the start times are that we would have to change many schedules, teens may just go to sleep later, and the extracurricular activities would go later. These are the main reasons but there are still many other reasons. When it comes down to it I believe we should keep the same start

Studies have shown that students on the later start time “ had better grades than students that started with a 7:15 a.m. start time”(Erde) This right here seals the deal and should automatically prove that we need to have these times in place and we need them quick for the betterment of our school and our future. And as parents this seems like an even better answer with a more happy kid that is doing better in school because of this change. We need to get out there and make a change in our society that benefits our kids and our future generations by raising the bar and with all of the negative things that go along with these early start times it will be hard to but with this change it will be even more doable and will be…

Of all the things high school students complain about, being sleep deprived and tired ranks first as most problematic. The issue isn’t that kids simply choose not to get enough sleep; it is that the majority genuinely cannot. Students are constantly being badgered by parents, doctors and school faculty to get at least eight hours of sleep, but with school starting as early as 7:20, that makes getting a decent amount of sleep an almost impossible task. Though there are numerous other reasons as to why students are lacking sleep, the start time of school is ultimately the main contributor and leads to many severely negative results. A policy causing high schools to start at 8:30 instead would greatly improve the number of better rested students.…

Do you feel like school should be started later in the morning? Well, the school should start later. Instead of school starting in 6:30, maybe it should start at 8. If schools delayed the start of the school, communities will have reduced tardiness, sleeping in class, accident rates, improved attendance, and higher test scores. School starting at 8 will most likely decrease the number of students falling asleep in class.…

Schools will reschedule the practices, allow practice to run a little later than normal, and match times are changed to meet the student's needs (¨Eight Major Obstacles to Delaying School Start Times¨). According to the Scholastic Scope article “Should School Start Later?” by Justin O’Neil and the article “Sleepy Teens: High School Should Start Later in the Morning” by Mark Fischetti, many schools are considering starting school later to help students succeed academically. Students have more trouble concentrating in class because they are not getting enough sleep. Some students arrive at school later because they oversleep. One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…

One of the reasons we think the school start time should stay the same is because it will make the time commitment of participating in after school activities more difficult to manage. All of us, like many other students, participate in after school activities. A later school start time will mean that school activities will start later and run even later than they do now. The later in the day it gets, the less energy we have to give 100% effort mentally. We will also be more physically tired which means if…

Many teens in are asking “What is the big deal I am just a little tired?” But not only are twenty-eight percent of those teens falling asleep in there first block class, but they also tend to get a worse grade than those individuals that fall asleep at the same time every night and take time to replenish their body at least one time in every week. I advise the school district take a later school start into consideration because if we do have a later start there will be results. In the essay “I’m not tired” by Alice Park experts said that teens are not getting nearly enough sleep. The video on NBC, teens said they felt overscheduled.…
