School Shooting History

History of School Shootings School shootings have dated as far back to the 1700’s. During the 1800’s there were 38 school shootings. From 1900 to 1979 there were 125 School shootings (History of School Shootings in the United States, 2016). From 1980 to September 28, 2016 there have been 277 school shootings in the United States. Since from 1980 to 2012 there have been 297 people killed (Kirk, 2012). In the last 30 years the worse shooting happened April 16, 2007 at Virginia Tech, 33 students were killed and 23 students were injured.

Why do kids become school shooters? Kids that become school shooters are not a specific kind of student. Many people believe that these shooters are loners in school. But that is not always
In three-fourths of the cases studied by the Safe School Initiative they found that the shooters told idea and details of their plans to friends, family, and fellow schoolmates before committing the act. These kids need help and many people see the signs but do nothing or very little to help them. Some of the signs are behavior, voicing problems/grievances, depression, complaints about bullying/persecution, and being desperate. In many of these cases the shooter planned out the attacks at least 2 weeks before the event. Seventy-five percent of shooters talked about suicide, made suicidal gestures, or tried to commit suicide before going through with the school shooting (Preventing, 2002). Some warning signs would be lack of remorse, violent, obsession with weapons, lack of ethics, no meaningful friends, high family dysfunction, and a history of social, emotional, and mental disturbances. (Healy, 2012) In most of the cases the shooter showed acts of violence in small ways and then worked their way up to a school shooting and they showed lack of remorse for committing those acts. Schools want Police Officers in schools to help prevent incidents that happen in school. In the past there have only been Police Officers in schools to educate the students in the DARE Program and to deal with criminal matters. Now, the Police Officers in the schools have become the first line of defense to prevent or handle school shootings. Law enforcement personnel need to coordinate with school districts to create plans, improve strategies, and examine preventative measures (Farris, 2013).
