School Lunches
A Disappointment
School lunches today are not as hearty and delicious as they were back in the day. When I was a child my lunches were prepared at school by the cafeteria workers. Today, the cafeteria workers heat up the already prepared food. Today's food is prepared by means of "nuking" it in the microwave, or heated up in the oven. This could maybe be the cause of obesity with the unhealthy choices at lunchtime in the dining halls.
When I was a child the mashed potatoes and turkey dinner were on of the best foods. I remembered all of my friends and I being so excited when turkey dinner day was approaching. The mashed potatoes were real with potatoes mashed not that power that you put milk in. The turkey was a real turkey, not fake or processed.
That is not the case today. Just the about the weekend before Thanksgiving, I saw that turkey dinner was on the menu for school lunch. I thought yummy! I went down to the Miller Dining Hall for the turkey Dinner. I went to the front desk and the lady scanned my card. When this person started to tell me about the dreadful turkey dinner. She said, “This is not the " Turkey Dinner" that we had as kids." I just laughed at her thoughts and went in to try for myself. The turkey was a processed chunk of whitish colored meat. This meat was floating in brownish colored gravy. This gravy tasted like it was mostly water with maybe brown food coloring added in. Potatoes are not what this white fluffy stuff tasted like. The food tasted horrible, and the portions were limited.
I can remember when I was a young boy in school; I never was hungry at any point throughout the day. The portions were healthy portions. You were given healthy portions of all the food that was offered for lunch. There was more variety in our choices.
We had a choice of two vegetables and two of something else. I can remember when chicken nuggets were served we received six nuggets. The nuggets were along the size of the nuggets served at McDonalds.

Back in elementary school, I would eat school lunches. The school lunches consisted of a main entree with a side of fruit, crackers, and milk. The lunches weren't all that appetizing. They had strawberry, 2 percent, and chocolate milk. My favorite was chocolate milk and still is. The crackers were usually honey graham crackers which tasted alright, but occasionally they would have chocolate teddy bear crackers which taste great with the chocolate milk. I avoided fruit at all cost because I didn't really care for them. The main entree was always something highly questionable. It always lacked flavor and proper texture. There were only two school lunches that I actually enjoyed. The first was the grilled cheese sandwich. It came with two perfectly…

I walked into the kitchen and spotted a turkey and prime rib, chicken, smoked ham, macaroni and cheese, corn on the cob, candy yams, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and greens. The delightful scents of turkey and prime rib, cheese, buttered corn, sweet yams, and gravy filled the air. I hear a timer go off, an oven opening, a microwave beeping, barbeques grilling, and family talking. I taste all sorts of things such as turkey and prime rib, macaroni and cheese, corn on the cob, candy yams, mashed potatoes, and greens. I touch my fork and spoon, the glass full of water, my napkin, my plate, and my food. I sight, smell, hear, taste, and touch many things during my Thanksgiving dinner.…

Close your eyes and think about the school lunches you’ve had through the years. The nasty, runny, cheese on your nachos; the over cooked pizza, fries, and hamburgers... Now think about how it would feel to waltz into lunch knowing you could have Taco Bell, Mc Donald’s, or Pizza Hut everyday. It sounds pretty fantastic, right? Wrong. Children, and quite a few adults, sadly don’t realize what fast food can do to your body. The easy availability of fast food in school lunch rooms would cause a large increase in childhood obesity.…

Next, there needs to be better lunches at the cafeteria at HMS. First of all, the lunches need to be bigger so the students can eat more. Before it was stated that students need food to focus in class. The current lunch sizes are for elementary schoolers. Middle schoolers are growing and need more food. Some people believe that the lunch sizes are fine but they are wrong because the kids will still be hungry. Ask the students, make a survey they will be hungry after lunch. They don’t have enough food and the little food we get is not even filling. For example, they have five small chicken wings that cost four dollars. The amount of chicken wings that we get is worth $1. Next, more kids will eat and it will be good for health. The school can…

Imagine trying to make yourself lunch everyday using only $2.95 This is what schools are forced to do on a daily basis in order to feed thousands of children. Schools have to be able to create a lunch for children that will satisfy their hunger, using only almost $3 per child. How can we expect our children to be getting the proper and nutritional food with such a small budget? Why aren't we doing more to to make sure the kids in our country are eating healthy meals while away from home? How can we make sure the students will react positive to healthier school lunches after being exposed to such unhealthy food for so long? There are so many questions to be asked and many answers to be given. I think we need to focus more attention on this dilemma because these kids are our future, and we need to make sure our future is as healthy physically and mentally as can be. It is a YouTube sensation. A video made by high school teens titled We Are Hungry is an exaggerated but necessary cry for a change. In the tune of hit song We Are Young the video depicts teens falling asleep during class and slumping to the floor during sports practices. As silly as the video gets at times it boils down to one thing. There needs to be a change. School lunches need to have more calories and bigger portions to support the growing bodies of the children and teens eating them.…

School lunches are almost always inadequate. More than half the students leave lunch hungry. They give choices of vegetables but when they don't taste good they'll just be trashed. If they eat eight hundred calorie meals and they only eat one fourth they only get two hundred of those calories. That's possibly for a high school student that plays three sports a year that won't be home until after six or seven o'clock.…

    Salvadoran Culture

Back then, I was very picky about what I ate. I only ate white rice, chicken nuggets, and pizza, which were all very bad for me. But now that I am all grown up, I am not as picky than I was as a child, and I feel more in touch with my culture now. I am Salvadoran, which people mistakenly think I am Mexican or some other race, and one food I love from El Salvador is pupusas. They are like a very thick tortilla stuffed with beans, pork, and cheese and you put hispanic coleslaw on top and pour red sauce on top of, yet I only the pupusa by itself. I remember my mom tried to make pupusas and it wasn’t like the ones we had at Salvadorian restaurant because this one had love. The first time she made it was awful, it was very dry and the beans were leaking out off the tortilla because she did not have that right corn flour to make it with. Though the food was really bad, all I remember was having fun and making a mess in the kitchen. But the next couple of times, they turned out a lot better. Also recently during Christmas, my mom has been making my great grandmother’s turkey recipe for that last five years, which consists of twenty tomatoes! I love this recipe so much that I wish one day that I could replicated.…

The mother looks at her children before she sends them off to school and thinks about how they’re day will go and if they will be eating right. She had packed them lunches while she apprehensively thinks about the school cafeteria food. Can you believe that so many children in elementary schools do not bring their lunch to school because parents feel that it’s more convenient or a time saver in the mornings, so their kids eat the school cafeteria food? This topic is fascinating because little do most parents know what kind of food their child is being fed. Everyone should be aware of the many risks that are involved when sending their children off to school with the expectation that their kids will get a healthy meal. Along with knowing that their child is getting a healthy meal, many can agree that eating the school cafeteria food is a leading cause in childhood obesity. First, when parents make their children’s lunches many will have a sandwich, which will contain the nutrients of carbohydrates in the bread and protein in the meat. Along with a healthy sandwich many will also pack a fruit as well as a simple desert, such as jello or pudding. This lunch for a child is a very healthy and satisfying one because it contains food from almost all of the food groups. Schools should start allowing for some healthier choices of foods inside their cafeterias because of the unhealthy effects and serious health risks it has on students in grades K-12 and because most schools have only made matters worse by including competitive foods such as fast food and other nutritionally inadequate foods on their menus in order to meet the wide range of tastes of the students.…

    My Perfect Thanksgiving

The mouth watering smell of homemade thanksgiving dinner fills the air. From every room in the house you can smell the sensational delicious thanksgiving aroma. When its time for dinner, the shuffling footsteps of my entire family can be heard miles from the house. As we all gathered around the rectangular table covered in a cream cloth, a sudden warm feeling is felt. Although there were a lot of candles lit, it was each others faces that light the dining room. In the centre of the table is the large turkey. Surrounding the turkey were other diverse dishes. There was several mountains of potatoes, fluffy marshmallow/sweet potatoes. The pale coloured mountains of rich, creamy deliciousness is next to the boiling gravy. There was also stuffing. The dish had various foods including chopped meat, vegetables and a variety of spices. The amazing dinner was followed by an ever more yummy desert. The brownies are always the best. The brown, baked batches have a hard chocolate shell on the outside and an overflow of chocolate in the inside. When a bite is taken from it a waterfall of chocolate oozes into your mouth. But the true superstar of deserts is my aunts fresh from the oven apple pie. The thick and crunchy bread, guards the sweet cinnamon syrup and apple custards on the inside. This thanksgiving dinner was surly a memorable one. The food was not the best part though. The best part was sharing not only delicious dinner but the whole night with the loving and good cooking family.…

    What Food Means to Me

Food is a part of everyone’s life whether it is a big or small part. It can affect people differently, and sometimes not at all. For example, David Sedaris cannot tell a difference in the quality of food, and sometimes can’t even recognize what is on his plate. Food to him is just colors, and about having enough to eat. While on the other hand, Anthony Bourdain loves all food, and can definitely appreciate the quality. He is a chef, and appears on some culinary shows. His life is ruled by food and the kitchen. For me, food is more about the experience than about the taste. When I think about food, I think about my family and friends in the milieus parties, holidays, Sunday dinners, baking with my mom, and eating out. Food is my way of connecting with the people that I love.…

In order to live, we must eat. Somewhere in our history, we stopped eating to live and started living to eat. This obsession with food has led to not only obesity in adults, but a rising obesity in children. This has lead to poor eating habits for children.Children have access to all types of food. There are snack vending machines, soda machines, and fast food restaurant counters in school cafeterias. At one time, kids took their lunches to school, but now most kids buy their lunch.
