Scholastic Book Fair
During my elementary and middle school career I remember being excited about the Scholastic Book Fair. Looking at all the books, notebooks, pens, and other stationary made me excited to read and write. During the Ivy Tech Scholastic Book Fair I saw many books and other items that would make my future classroom excited as well. The book fair not only has grade level appropriate books for all ages but it also has different subjects in each level. Some of the subjects I saw that intrigued me were science, fantasy and mystery.
The science books were particularly interesting because most of them included hands on material like tools and rocks. These kind of books not only get the students engaged in reading the book but engaging in what it said. This kind of hands on learning activates can help promote students to comprehend the information. Making reading and learning fun can help

These kind of books catch a reader’s attention and have them engaged on what comes next. Some of the books that go into this are for older readers but can be read-a-louds to younger students. Harry Potter books are great read-a-loud books and have mystery behind every corner. Another book collection is The Boxcar Children. I would choose any of these books to read to my classroom. Reading to your students gets their minds and imagination going. The book fair also had many mystery picture books for students to read alone. These books will have the student reading the whole thing to find out what happens at the end. Mystery books are great for all ages, especially in the classroom.
The book fair was not only a learning experience to see all the different books, but I found some books for my own library at home along with a book to add to my classroom library. My favorite book was The Board Barnacle. This book teaches to not complain about what you have but to be grateful. It also was a funny book for the

The artifact that demonstrates the type of reading program I want in my future classroom is the book “Don’t Laugh At Me” by Steve Seskin, Allen Shamblin and Glin Dibley, and the song that goes with it. I learned it can be harder than it seems to find a book you think someone else would enjoy reading based on questions you ask them. Also, it is harder to find a book for someone who states they do not have much time to read and find it hard to read a book that is not something they absolutely enjoy reading. In the classroom, I can use interest inventories by giving one to my students then helping them find books they would enjoy reading. If the students can find books they actually want to read, it will make them more likely to love…

    Educating Esme Summary

The book I chose was Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher’s First Year by Esme Raji Codell. I chose this book because I honestly judged it from the title on the book review assignment page and found this to possibly be something that might help me in my journey into becoming a teacher. I found this book to very amusing and very touching. I thought that Esme's attitude and writing style was funny and easy to read and understand. One of my favorite stories in the book is the one when Esme made Billy Williams teach the class for a day because he was misbehaving. Esme threatened suspension to Billy for cursing and being disrespectful, so he accepted the punishment of teaching the class for the day instead of suspension. I thought it was great that he was able to mimic and recite specific lines that Esme used even though he didn’t always seem…

The book I decided to read was The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards. I chosed this book because it demonstrated real life situations, teaching us lessons that 9th graders can use in their later future while creating fascinating storyline to keep the story entertaining. This story is about a couple who had a twins but one came with down syndrome. So the husband who is also delivering the babies decided to send the baby away before the gas on his wife wore off. He had the nurse take the baby girl to a institution, but instead she kept the baby left the city and raised the child as her own. In my opinion i would highly recommend this book for 9th graders to read, it has…

Most of the girls have a high interest in mystery novels. Novels that left many unanswered questions seem to be the type that they like best. Most surprising is that thrillers and science fiction novels were among the top favorite reading materials among the girls. All but one of the books presented during the booktalk fell into the categories of mystery, thriller, and science fiction. Ironically, the books chosen for the booktalk were the types of materials that these students may self-select. It may have been valuable to elicit student preferences before the booktalk to ensure that students’ reading interests were met. On the other hand, it may also be beneficial to present types of materials that are not usual preferences in order to introduce them to new authors and…

In science, the use of trade books is a literacy strategy that is being used more commonly in the classroom, such as informational text and nonfiction trade books. (Atkinson, Matusevich, and Huber, 2009; Mantzicopulos and Patrick, 2011; Rice, 2002). The use of nonfiction trade books has become a crucial part of elementary education because they help students understand science concepts better (Atkinson, Matusevich, and Huber, 2009). By using trade books, teachers are able to build upon the understanding of science that the students gained while introducing other scientific concepts. Trade books can make it easier for students who have difficulty or reluctance to read can help teachers connect to them with science topics (Atkinson, Matusevich,…

Every day hundreds, if not thousands of families look forward to their local upcoming weekend activities. For some, it is the local fair that rolls into town with the rides for their children. Others, it is a walk on the water front with good food and drinks. For most, it is time to relax, have a cold drink, and enjoy things like Seafair in Washington State, or the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach for Southern California residents. Without local non-profit organizations, most of your favorite weekend activities would not exist. Non-profit organizations support many local events, as well as community programs that would not normally receive assistance. For a non-profit organization to flourish, it must have organization, structure, income, volunteers, a location, and events to move it forward. However, sometime with the fluctuation of the economy, it can make things difficult for the non-profit to move forward or even survive.…

My Math teacher made a difference on my reading life. He always had good books to lend me. My appreciation for reading increased with many books he suggested. I’m very glad he was in my life to help to develop my reading skills. Although, I had to learn a new language when I moved to United Sates. I still enjoy reading. My favorite books are the fiction books. I still enjoyed the feeling of traveling to different worlds and be part of adventures. If a book has a kingdom, king, historical pieces, new languages, weird people, villains, and a hero, that it will be a book I’ll…

They never asked me what do I want to read about or what I want to learn about until my 7th grade year when we had to read a book, take a test on it, and then write a book report on it. When I was listening to my teacher describe the assignment I was waiting for the circumstances. Then she said anything we want to read and do a book report on. I was dumbfounded when I went to the library because I had no idea on where to start. So I just started going to random areas of the library and seeing anything that just popped out at me and begged me to read it. Finally one did, and to this day still my favorite book I have ever read, “Iron Marshall” by Louis L’Amour. I fell in love with this book. I read it every night before I went to sleep and every day during school when I had down time during class. What drew me in was that there was action in every chapter and the story was in such good detail. I now know the saying that the book is better than the movie. And it is all because of “Iron Marshall”. After reading that book I had to see what else Louis L’Amour had because of how much I fell in love with the first one. Oh he did and to my surprise I can’t pick a favorite one! I read every single book he had in the library by the end of my sophomore year in high…

She also bought numerous cassettes and CD’s with read books on them. When I was little I wrote a small book for a book fair at my last school, Valley Oaks Charter School, for which I earned a participation ribbon. I participated in several other extracurricular activates; for instance, Odyssey of The Mind, International day, and The Science Fair. Odyssey of the mind is a team of five to seven people and the team has about ten months to complete their problem. We got the “Not So Hounted House” problem where we had to build a building that looked hunted but was not and we had to write a skit about nine minutes in length. International day is a group of children from Valley Oaks Charter School got together and each did a report on a forgen countrys. Science fair is where children reascherced and created interesting math or science. My sister and I once made it to the state cience fair and I enjoyed it very much. I know that doing all the public speaking helped me a lot not only with reading and memorizing but also my…
