I. Lisa is a 19 year old college student at the University of Minnesota. She is going to become a physical therapist. Until one day, she became increasingly paranoid and began acting in bizarre ways. But that was just the beginning; Lisa dropped out of school, ignored her personal hygiene, lost her job, and cut off all communication with her family and friends. Then she started hearing voices, these voices were telling her that the people she surrounded herself with were out to get her. II. Lisa has developed a serve mental disorder called schizophrenia. III. Schizophrenia is a misunderstood illness that affects more people than we realize. IV. Today I will cover what this mysterious disease is, what causes it, the different types of schizophrenia, and the treatment options available. Transition: So what exactly is Schizophrenia?
I. 2.4 million people in the United States have this mysterious disease, and the number is rising. a. World Book Encyclopedia states, that the word schizophrenia means the splitting of the mind. b. Helpguide.org explains it better that schizophrenia is a brain disorder that affects the way a person acts, thinks, and sees the world. i. Often time’s people with schizophrenia lose contact with reality. ii. They see or hear things that don’t exist, speak in strange or confusing ways, or believe that others are trying to harm them. c. Schizophrenia makes it difficult to tell the difference between what is real and not real. Transition: Now let’s turn to the causes of schizophrenia. II. There are many factors that lead to schizophrenia.
