Schenectady Community College Composition Course Analysis
According to the course description at Schenectady Community College “ College Composition is a course that provides a foundation in academic discourse by developing effective communication skills with an emphasis on expository writing.” The course is offered to students’ in the Technology, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood, Hospitality, and Culinary program. RCCC plans on eliminating the ENG 123 course as a requirement. As a student taking this course I find it to be very helpful, therefore, it should be required for all students to take.
Sean Slade, the director of Outreach at ASCD ( Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) said “ the ability to communicate effectively and skillfully is fundamental to students development.” Even as adults this quote describes how communication skills are necessary. For example, we often make simple mistakes like using the words “is” or “are”; which is one common mistake that we frequently use incorrectly. As stated above, as future professionals in each program listed the field requires an individual to communicate with others.
As a future teacher in the Early Childhood field I would like to improve my communication skills in order to embed them in my own students. Communicating plays a role in our daily lives through the many interactions that we encounter on a day to day basis from shopping at the grocery store, to making a presentation, and even interacting at a job interview or with peers. College Comp serves as an informational course that enables learners to inhabit positive communications skills. It also helps students to avoid being held back from jobs and personal relationships due to lack of communication
