“Save the Girl Child”

It is said that god created mothers because he could not be present everywhere. It is unbelieveable to realize that a god's representative is countinuously killing someone beautiful even before she can come out and see the beauty of nature. Let us consider some facts -

In india , she is the goddesses to be revered , in the form of Laxmi ( Goddess of wealth ) , Saraswati ( Goddess of knowledge ) and Sita ( ideal consort of Lord Sri Ram ) and even in the form of Durga ( Killer of evil ) but does that happpen in real life ? The picture in real life is quite different.

India is growing dynamically in every field. Today , the boom in economy , innovative technologies and improved infrastructure has become nation's pride. The country has witnessed advancement in all fields but has the country given equal opportunities to the boys and girls?

India has examples of woman who have risen from ashes like phoenix and done the country proud. There are numerous examples to mention, The country had an able prime minister in Indira Gandhi and now H.E. Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil , the first female president of India. India's first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi, who had braught great laurels to her profession in the country, Kalpana Chawla , the first female astronaut from India. The list is endless. then Why the girl child is denied the basic human right of taking birth through female infacticide and female foeticide?

Jawaharal Nehru , the first Prime minister of India has said - “ You can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its woman”.

As regards status of girl child - “It is believed that every year 12 million girls are born in the country but unfortunately only 1/3 of those survive. Some are killed in the womb , some at the time of the birth, some die due to ill health and some due to poor nutritional status. Only a few number of girls are able to survive till their 15th birthday”.

Worst to say -

– Number of girl child in Delhi (865) and mumbai ( 898) is much below the national ratio of 927 girls per 1000 boys. – Every sixth girl childs death is due to gender discrimination. – 3 lac more girls than boys die every year.

If these practise contines , then the country and the region as a whole is likely to witness increased gender biased voilence , trafficking , discrimination and general vulnerability of woman and girls.

Why is the status of woman so degraded ?

The status of woman in a society can be determined by their education , health , economic role, presence in the profession and management , and decision making power within family. It is deeply influenced by the beliefs and values in society. A whole range of discriminatory practises including female foeticide , female infancticide , son idolisation , early marriage and dowry have burried the future of nation . In india , discrminatory practises have greatly influenced the health and well being of a girl child , resulting in a higher mortality rate.

Female feticide and infacticide are the most popular social evils prevailing in the country. This evil is the outcome of poverty , illiteracy and gender discrimination. It is painfull to confess that the trend still exists in various parts of the country . States like Maharashtra , Harayana , Rajasthan , Tamil Nadu and Panjab are most popular for pactising female foeticide and infacticide. Islam permits polygamy and gives woman fewer rights than man. Among hindus, preference for male child is likewise deeply enshrined in belief and practise. The birth of a son is regarded as essential in Hinduism and many prayers and lavish offerings are made in temples in the hope of having a male child.

Religion operates alongside other cultural and economic factors in lowering the status of woman. The practise of dowry has spread nationwide , to communities and caste in which it had never been the custom , fuelled by consumerism and emulation of upper...
