A Summary of The Nature of Philosophical Inquiry
A Summary of Robert Johann’s “The Nature of Philosophical Inquiry”
Philosophy has made progress through the development of specialized methods that fragment the knowledge that philosophy eternally seeks. Johann seeks to elaborate on the nature of philosophical inquiry through the method of Pragmatism, more specifically Ontological Pragmatism. This method will measure the truth of philosophical inquiry through what it leads to in experience or practice. Inquiry can be either scientific or philosophical, depending on what it questions. Scientific inquiry questions the world outside man, while philosophical questions the world inside man. Philosophical inquiry, though implicitly stated, can be summed up to this statement: It is the transcendence of common knowledge through the entire involvement of the other through discourse and sharing of common experiences with the hope of giving birth to new knowledge through shared reflection. What is meant by this is simple, philosophical inquiry involves another person in order for it to occur. There must be a tension between one and another, a question must be asked regarding the common knowledge that in which is comfortable to one or the other.
Logic, Phenomenology, and Meta-Pragmatics are the three modes of Philosophical Inquiry given by Johann. Logic deals with the rational and sensible organization of experiences. Phenomenology is the process of making these rational and sensible organizations of experience practical and applicable to daily life. Logic must contain phenomenological adequacy so as it to be pragmatic. Lastly, meta-pragmatics is making this phenomenological adequacy useful to man and his community. It is transcending the sphere of knowledge that has been set by society. In short, philosophical inquiry starts in oneself, when he chooses to be part of another.     Descartes took an extreme skeptical position by asking, “What is impossible to doubt, even when trying to believe that everything is false?” His answer was: "I think, therefore I am"; which is Descartes ' most famous one-liner and is the one that explains his understanding of the dualism argument. The term ‘dualism’ has a variety of uses in the history of thought. In general, the idea is that, for some particular domain, there are two fundamental kinds or categories of things or principles. In the philosophy of mind, dualism is the theory that the mental and the physical or mind and body are, in some sense, radically different kinds of thing. The main discussion about dualism tends to start from the assumption of the reality of a physical world, and then ways of considering arguments for why the mind cannot be treated as simply part of that physical world. According to substance dualism, our minds and our bodies are two distinct substances capable of existing apart. Descartes substance dualism was based in the belief that the universe consisted of two different kinds of substances that he called res extensa (physical things) and res cogitans (thinking things). In other words, the essence of mind is thought while the essence of body is extension. This belief also leads to his assumption that Free Will is self-evident. In other words, if one is capable of doubting the existence of things learned through experience even when some of these may be true, then it is obvious that we have the freedom to disbelieve, thus free will.…

    In the modern period of philosophy, around the 16th and 17th century, after the fall of Rome and the rise of the dark years, three major events had occurred. The first began with the scientific revolution, where many philosophers were becoming scientist, such as the philosopher of science Francis Bacon. The next event was the resurgence of skepticism, where one questions everything until they discover the truth. For instance, the philosopher famous for saying the phrase “Cogito, ergo sum,” (translated as I think, therefore I am) was the skeptic Rene Descartes, who came up with this quote by doubting everything until there was nothing else to doubt except doubting. The final altering event in the modern period was the split in epistemological perspectives, the study of knowledge and justified belief. Though the methods of such men have varied in time and space, those who have achieved any notable plateaus of illumination have done so through systematic and unbiased reasoning. This organization of rational progression has been called many things, though for the sake of uniformity within this composition, it shall be given the label “scientific investigation.” The steps used in a scientific investigation are ordered to follow a universally logical and coherent process, which can be applied not only to the sciences but also to logic, philosophy, mathematics, and all other pursuits that require a solid cognitive basis. To be worthy of the status attributed to scientific investigation, the execution of such methods must include clarity of mind, openness to refutation, patience, and review, though the exact phases of different applications may vary. Two perspectives on the role of scientific investigation in human enlightenment that hold evidence of truth but present seemingly conflicting theses are those of Immanuel Kant and John Henry Newman. These great thinkers respectively maintain the opposing positions that the achievement of enlightenment is possible if one is allowed to utilize reason to explore a subject freely and publically and, conversely, that enlightenment can only be attained through careful analysis and a limitation of deference to human involvement.…
