Saturday At The Canal By Gary Soto Summary
Have you ever wanted to get away from your normal everyday life? In Gary Soto’s poem, “Saturday at the Canal,” the poet tells of a seventeen-year old boy who is leading a very monotonous life and one that he wishes to get away from. Using First-Person, the boy feels that his life is boring and by leaving his home town he will find happiness. He also feels that his life lacks purpose and going away will show him that his life has worth and purpose. Gary Soto uses personification, metaphors, and rich imagery to convey a deep sense of restlessness in a young man’s soul.
In lines five and seventeen the narrator uses personification by saying “the hallways stank of poor grades and unwashed hair.” This means most of the kids in that school were

Imagery is used in line twelve, “Hitchhike under the last migrating birds.” This paints an image of going to San Francisco during the spring and hitchhiking under the birds that are migrating to the north just after winter. The poet uses, “But our hair was shoulder length, wild when the wind picked up,” to give us an image of what the boy looks like. His hair is shoulder length because he does not clean or care for himself. There is no one he cares to impress in his town. Imagery is also used in line nineteen, “We wanted to get out. The years froze as we sat on the bank.” Soto uses this to give us an image of how long the boy has been wanting to get out of the town he has grown up in. When he says, “we wanted to get” this makes it sound like the boy is frustrated. Soto uses personification to emphasize the hopelessness and loneliness of the boy in the poem. Metaphors are used in the poem to convey the dreams and thoughts of the boy in the poem.
Soto uses rich imagery to paint a picture of how the boy is thinking and the type of environment of the boy is

As the narrator, Melinda Sordino, awaits her first day as a freshman at Merryweather High she describes, “the school bus wheezes to my corner” (pg 3). The authors’ use of personification describes the heaviness and panic that is set into the setting. When Melinda arrives at school, she describes, as others’ talk behind her back, the feeling that “words climb up my throat” (pg 5). This personification describes the want to speak up but is silenced by her feelings of anger and disparity. Melinda’s experience so far at high school hasn’t been perfect, but has rather worn her out “my bed is sending out serious nap rays… The fluffy pillows and warm comforter are more powerful than I am” (pg 16). This passage shows that she would…

In poem the imagery job was to put reader in the shoe of the young white narrator. Imagery allowed reader to come to a conclusion of why would narrator think like she did. An example of this were in line nine through ten, where narrator claimed that IQ the African American man had a casual, cold, alertness in his eye as if he planned to may her. Another examples is line twenty six through thirty one, as she explained how man can break her back like a stick maybe for vengeance on people that are breaking his.…

Imagery is used in multiple points around the text and is possibly the most important poetic element. For instance in the text the speaker uses imagery such as “the boys stamp, the girls shriek, and the drum booms…” by adding this imagery the author is showing how caught up in the action everyone is. As the two young men drive through the desert, Alexie applies significant imagery to show the isolation and importance of the situation. There is a certain tension in the air when the two old friends reconnect after their falling out. They are alone in the middle of nowhere: “Victor looked around the desert, sniffed the air, felt the emptiness and loneliness” (159). Alexie uses imagery to encapsulate the situation that the two young men are in. To help the reader feel the tension of the isolated experience, imagery is used to describe the spacious and lonely desert. As they trudged through Nevada they “had been amazed at the lack of animal life, at the absence of water, of movement” (149). Alexie’s imagery in this particular scene shows us the fog of tension between Victor and Thomas and gives the readers the feeling of tense isolation. As they travel the sixteen-hour-journey back home, they have hours and hours of desert to think about their shared past. The desert is vast and stripped, which forces them to either be deep in thought or forcibly converse with each other. All of this tension is shown through the description of the desert.…

The poem includes “the clouds assemble and mumble their messages” (6) and “the grass, in its green time, bows to whatever moves it” (11). The clouds must have been given the chance to “assemble” (6) and converge through the use of the same wind that swayed the grass. Personification does well to develop a sense of connectivity that all life has on Earth. Such examples are examples of personification namely because clouds cannot innately “mumble their messages” (6) and the ground does not innately shudder as an ant walks upon it (3). These non-living entities are given human characteristics in the form of sentiments and actions not natural to these entities in real…

Soto uses positive diction and vivid imagery to describe himself and the cause of his actions. In the beginning of the passage, Soto portrays the image of himself being a good and proper boy by using allusions from the bible and childlike diction. Soto uses phrases like “holy in almost every bone”, “shadow of angels, and “flowery dust” to further the contrast between this act of sin and the true character of Soto as a six year old. This also sheds a light onto Soto’s ways of looking at life, and how his morals, even as a six year old, tell him that stealing is wrong. Soto specifically uses the phrase “holy in almost every bone” to show how innocent Soto originally is, as holy is a…

Hernando Tellez used imagery to express some of the mood in the story. “I would have to close the door, and the blood would keep inching on the floor, warm, ineradicable, uncontainable, until it reached the street, like a little scarlet stream,” plotted the barber. This serves as an example of Tellez’s visual imagery.”Just Lather, That’s All” also provides auditory imagery such as, “ The razor rasped along, making its customary sound as fluffs of lather mixed with bits of hair gathered along the blade.” This last quote is one of the story’s examples of tactile imagery to express and add to the reader’s conflicted perception of this story.…

At the beginning of the poem, there is a use of cacophonic sounds of “branching vines.” “Burred faintly belching bogs” are used to describe the ugly sounds of the swamp as the character takes a step forward; which only add more to the misery and struggle of the speaker. The repetition of the word “Here”” is also very unique because it is emphasizing the location of where the character is being tortured by having to walk into this swamp of misery and struggle. There is another sound the speaker describes “that sink silently on to the black slack earthsoup” (lines 20-22). This diction considered as imagery, because it is making a comparison between the swamp and earthsoup.…

Throughout the narrative many allusions are present. One of the most prevalent is the allusion to God. Sota refers to God several times to demonstrate he was a religious child. This also shows the he knows the severity of his sin, and consequences for it. Another allusion Soto uses is to Adam and Eve. Soto says “I Knew an apple got Eve in deep trouble.” He knew he did not want to end up like Adam and Eve, spending the rest of his life roaming the desert. By using allusions the author helps to recreate the harsh felling of guilt he felt as boy, stealing the apple pie.…
