A True Hero Heroes can be defined in numerous ways. There are heroes like Superman and Batman, but then there are the men and women that fight for our freedom. There are also individuals who are your friends or family that may seem to be your hero. In Tatiana de Rosnay’s Sarah’s Key, Sarah expresses her heroic self by exhibiting bravery, determination, and trustworthiness. Whether you call it daring, bold, spunky or audacity, Sarah had it. Bravery is a way of fearlessness, which she embodied. Sarah displayed courage by putting her head up from feeling despondent and continued to proceed with her mission. “’Be brave, my sweet love. Be brave, as brave as you can.’ She could not cry” (Rosnay 23). When Sarah had her head shaved she acquired great valor unlike the other children. “When it was her turn, the girl did not struggle. She felt sobs welling up in her throat but forced herself not to cry. Never to cry in front of these men. Never cry. Ever” (Rosnay 81). She didn’t distress who they were, Sarah saw everyone as equals. “She realized she was not afraid of him. She felt a sort of strange pity for him, which puzzled her”(Rosnay 90). Anyone and everyone can be fearless, it just takes an inner ability to show the courage that you contain. Rosnay 2
To have determination, there must be an inner desire to achieve one’s purpose. Sarah exhibited great tenacity when trying to escape with Rachel from the camp. “With Rachel, she had made up her mind. They were going to escape”(Rosnay 87). Trying to find her brother, Michael, this keeps her fighting to get out of the camp. “’ I’ll come back for you later. I promise”’(Rosnay 9). Sarah wants and will keep her promise with Michael. She has the inner strength to eventually kill herself by crashing her car into a tree in her adulthood. Determination can be an admirable trait, but it can also back fire and cause dreadful actions. It is ashamed that throughout history we define “loyalty” as a trait found in dogs. However, in the book, Sarah possess the rare trait for an individual. Sarah’s little brother, Michael, trusted her with his life. He allowed her to lock him in a cupboard, so that the police would not take him with the others. “’I’m going to our secret place”, he whispered. The girl could see her brother’s small face peeking out at her from the darkness. “Are you afraid in there?” she asked softly as the men called out for them. “No,” he said. “I’m not afraid. You lock me in. They won’t get me”’(Rosnay 90). After mothers’ and their children had been separated, Sarah was trusted by many of the children of the camp. “Little by little, she came to know their names, their ages, but some of them were so small they could hardly answer her. They were thankful for a warm voice, for a smile, a kiss, and they followed her around the camp, dozens of them, training after her like bedraggled sparrows”(Rosnay 80). Rachel, a tall eleven-year-old girl with black hair, also trusted Sarah. They escaped the camp together and succeeded. With Sarah’s trustworthiness, this influenced many in a positive way.

With a willingness to preserver and a determination to accomplish ones goal Sarah Starzynski in Sarah’s Key exhibited bravery, determination, and trustworthiness. In spite of the many obstacles thrown at Sarah, she still came out strong. There might be a barrier in your way throughout life, but just keep your head up high and continue to make your way through it. Heroes personify a way of life that only the chosen can achieve.

Imagine a world without heroes, no one to guide the helpless citizens that roam about from the terrible evils that poison the world. A hero is someone who is idolized for their actions or qualities, someone who acquires the qualities of strong leader, who will guide society away from the evils of the world. Two great heroes are Odysseus, a made up character, from Homer’s The Odyssey, and Tris, the main character, from Veronica Roth’s series Divergent. While Odysseus may have been an original hero, Tris has blossomed like a flower to become a much better hero than Odysseus.…

What is it to be a hero / heroine? Is it just a matter of goodness? Is it possible for someone whose character is flawed – or suddenly revealed to be flawed - to still retain this status? Geraldine Brooks’ novel, ‘Year of Wonders’ leaves us with such questions and reminds us that these are complex considerations. A ‘hero’ (or ‘heroine’) can be defined as, “a person who is greatly admired for their noble actions and nobility of spirit”. In terms of ‘Year of Wonders’, we can flesh this out more clearly – those we deem ‘heroic’ are seen as such because of their selfless devotion to the welfare of others. They serve others without…

Even after all of her experiences in the concentration camps, she still had faith in God. She said, "God does not have problems — only plans." Without her faith in God, she wouldn’t have been able to be as resilient as she was during the Holocaust, and she wouldn’t have been able to minister to all of the people she did. All through history, society has reflected on what accurately defines a hero. More recently, individuals have considered Alek Skarlatos, Spencer Stone, and Anthony Sadler - three American friends who helped thwart what could have been a mass shooting on a packed high-speed train bound for Paris – as the chief example of a hero. They cared not for themselves, but for the individuals aboard the train, and although they have resisted the designation of a hero with vengeance and vigor, people around the world continue to think of these three men as heroes. It, in a way, makes individuals wonder, what can they do for other people, whether it’s giving their lunch to the woman down the street or giving up their seat on the bus for an elderly man? This all may…

    How Is Scout Brave

An example of this happening in the book is when Jem is telling Scout to go home but she didn’t want to show that she was being a ‘scaredy cat’. “Scout, I’m telling you for the last time, shut your trap or go home-I declare to the Lord you’re gettin’ more like a girl every day!’ With that, I had no option but to join them.” (Lee 69). This shows that Scout is brave because in these times it was difficult being a girl and Scout didn’t care what other people thought about her. This takes a lot of bravery to do. Another example of when this happens in the book is when Jem is telling Scout that he is going to go back to the Radley house to get back his pants but Scout doesn’t want him to go alone. So she insists on going back with him but Jem convinces her to stay where she was. “It’s not like he’d never speak to you again or somethin’... I’m gonna wake him up, Jem, I swear I am-’ Jem grabbed my pajama collar and wrenched it tight. ‘Then I’m goin’ with you-’ I choked” (Lee 75) This also shows that Scout is brave because even though she is really scared of the Radley house she wants to go back with Jem to get his pants. Most girls would never even think about going back to the house because a lot of the girls then wore dresses and used manners and were also pretty much scared of…
