Sara Blakely Case Study
2. Does hindsight bias affect the factors to which you might attribute Blakely’s success? Why or why not?

Sara Blakely has always shown a strong character. From her childhood on she exhibited her management skills, for instance by manipulating friends, so they would take care of her household chores or by listening to Wayne Dyer to build up her personality. Showing a good performance appeared to be important for Sara Blakely throughout her whole life. However, giving up seems to be no choice for her at all. Taking this into account it is not remarkable, that she started her first business at age of 19 after receiving two rejections by law school. What would have destroyed other people because of self-doubt, led Blakely to change her objectives.

Later, after coming up with the idea of specific pantyhose, Sara Blakely had not been distracted by the fact of not knowing how to apply for a patent and started to gain certain knowledge to handle this situation. Her effort is not a surprise at all as her previous behaviour already made the reader believe that she will be successful this time as well. After this barrier, Blakely also managed to get financed even she had to suffer several exclusions by potential shareholder. Once more, the feeling occurs that this career was predictable, as it is due to her big courage and ambition. Considering Blakely´s success story, it feels obvious that she has the ability of forming a small business into an international company. The big breakthrough came with Blakely´s idea of involving Oprah Winfrey. It worked out and today her company earns billions of dollars and is ready to grow. At the end the expectations to the reader got measured up. But …show more content…
But analysing feelings and thoughts after reading this short story, hindsight bias may have affected the reader. The following definition will help to understand the potential perception of someone by reading Sara´s life story: “ [Hinsight bias is the] tendency to believe falsely, after an outcome of an event is actually known, that one would have accurately predicted that outcome.” (Judge/Robbins 2013, p. 181-182) To clarify, that Blakely´s success was hard to forecast, there is a need to look at the factors which Blakely´s success get attributed to: character, work attitude, self-gained expertise, attitude towards life and somehow luck; Looking at the variety of different influencing factors it may be possible to have assumptions, but by reviewing Blakely´s life, her success was not secured at all. Without reading the headline of the story and knowing about the result the tendency of thinking would possibly have led into a totally other direction. Blakely´s attitude seemed to direct to enormous success but looking deeper to the matter there were many interruptions and failures. From this point of view the reader would maybe have had developed a different opinion about the outcome, at least if he would not have known how everything worked out for Blakely at the end. To underline the fact that characteristics, know-how and other personal

High expectations and overconfidence can almost always lead to disappoint. Hindsight biases shed light on the show the clues and signs that made a certain outcome occur before it happened afterward. The hindsight bias is that “I knew it all along” phenomenon that is only ever stated after all the facts have been presented. The basic example of the hindsight bias is when after seeing the outcome of a possible unforeseeable event a person then believes he or she "knew it all along". Historical events upon deep review all show many signs of the ticking bomb that slowly led to what seemed like a spontaneous explosion that underneath have a complex expansive list of motives that provoked it. For instance, Great Depression in review wasn’t one bad stock market crash that spiralled into a huge economic shut down but the result of many factors. Over Speculation of stock and land, overproduction of goods and unregulated banking were just some of many factors at play that now in hindsight seem like obvious red flags but at the time they went unnoticed by most. World War One may seem to have been immediately caused by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand but the long term background of imperialism, militarism, nationalism and intense alliances were really the factors that led up to war, historians and students alike can review information from that time and scholarly work and create a hindsight biased of each factor and what it actually led to yet at the time leading up to actual war it was much harder to tell because the future as so unclear.…

    Grace Blakely Motivation

The first impression that is made by Grace Blakely shows that she is a strong character, both physically and emotionally. Also, with her headstrong personality, she enjoys taking situations into her own hand, such as finding her mother’s killer. Finding the “scarred man” who murdered her mother years ago is one of Grace’s main motivation. Starting with the first impression, which is the impression which lasts throughout the story, the author makes sure we as the reader understand that Grace is no weak lamb, but is actually the exact opposite. For example, “when I was twelve I broke my leg jumping off the wall between Canada and Germany…. My brother said that the fall would probably kill me…. I totally showed him,” (pg. 1). This introduction…

Rationality and reasonability are inseparable from decisions (Sibley; 1953). Every decision an individual makes is made, perhaps unconsciously, in the belief that it is rational and reasonable in their current environment as we would not make them otherwise. Their rationality and reasonability comes under scrutiny from third parties, after the decision has been made with the benefit of hindsight (Sibley; 1953). The opinions I express on every case study that follows is of course one with hindsight, it is impossible for me to put myself in exactly the same situation as the individual who made the decision due to different life experiences in the short (on the day) and long (that month or the rest of his/her life) term. We believe there is a rational explanation for any decision’s success of or failure (Mankiw & Taylor; 2006). As we analyse the outcome of a decision, we are uncomfortable unless we can find solid evidence to explain what happened. We have difficulty in accepting the chaos of life as an answer (Hoffer; 1985).…

Sara may be well-intentioned, but she and St. Gregory’s are going about things the wrong way. You’re not supposed to let just anyone who wants to, take communion, much less pray the words of consecration over toast when your friend and former lover is dying, you don’t baptize people after they take communion, you don’t baptize children just because they ask, you don’t baptize people after they take communion, you don’t baptize children just because they ask, you don’t marry a person of the same sex and you don’t lay hands on people and pray for them without having received the authority to do so. And the pantry is not church; you need a valid liturgy and authorized clerics for that. Sara has simply allowed her leftist politics, concern for outcasts, and the ‘liberation theology’ of Jesuits like Martin-Baro to overcome her good sense. People need rules; that’s why we have them in the first place. If we don’t have rules, people will do whatever they want, and then where will we be?…
