Sandwich Blitz Case Study
Unit 7 Assignment

In Unit 7 we learned about self-managed teams. I believe that Sandwich Blitz would benefit from a self-managed team because that would take a lot of pressure off of Dalman and Lei. I think that the one that they should go with would be the Semiautonomous Work Group. I think this because it would give the person or persons Dalman and Lei put in charge a lot of responsibilities that they are currently taking on themselves.

In a Semiautonomous Work Group the person or persons in charge make the majority of the decisions and carry out the day to day things and would only get Dalman and Lei involved if they needed support for certain things that would need their approval. I think this is what Dalman and Lei are implementing

Potbelly Sandwich Works is a privately held restaurant chain that sells submarine sandwiches in the United States. Potbelly Sandwich Works began in 1977 founded by Peter Hastings. The original store is located in Chicago, in a retail space that was previously an antique store, Hindsight, also owned by Hastings. Many of the items that decorate the store were taken from the former business. Despite the fast-paced, never-a-dull-moment world of antique dealing, the couple decided to bolster their business by making sandwiches for their customers. What began as a lark, turned out to be a stroke of genius. Soon, people who couldn't care less about vintage glass doorknobs were stopping by to enjoy special sandwiches and homemade desserts in this unusual atmosphere.…

Each Sandwich Blitz location is situated on very small parcels of land. This original strategy has contributed to somewhat lower operating expenses for the business and both Dalman and Lei view this as a competitive advantage. Based on new local health codes, new laws have been issued requiring trash dumpsters be a minimum distance of 30 feet (9.144 meters) from the rear entrance of the building. New land-use laws require that all out buildings be at least 6 feet (1.8288 meters) from the property lines. The enclosure that houses the trash dumpster is 5 feet (1.524 meters) from the property lines, which is in violation of those laws. The government inspector has told the unit manager that he would be willing to approve this if Sandwich Blitz provides the food for his department's holiday party. The location manager has conveyed this information to Dalman. Each Sandwich Blitz location is situated on very small parcels of land. For my Unit 10 : Discussion posting, I have chosen to use the country "Mexico". A business group from this country has offered to purchase a franchise of Sandwich Blitz. Although both Dalman and Lei are overly excited about this idea, they must both learn about "Mexico's" cultural norms, business and meeting practices, and its values. As I understand that a meeting has been arranged for Dalman, Lei, and three representatives from the business group, to discuss the idea of "Mexico" purchasing a franchise of Sandwich Blitz. With this being a very important meeting, and it involving networking with individuals who will influence the outcome of this transit to expand the business of Sandwich Blitz, Dalman and Lei should both begin reading, reviewing, and learning…

Self-managed teams are autonomous work groups in which workers are trained to do all or most of the jobs in a unit, have no immediate supervisor, and make decisions previously made by first line supervisors (Snell, 2013, p. 285). Implementing such teams within Sandwich Blitz could potentially prove to be advantageous by promoting empowerment, increased employee commitment, better customer satisfaction, and improved quality control. Cross training every team member to do the job above and below them would mostly eliminate the day to day struggles of each location in that they would more easily be able to deal with personnel shortages and overall workload could be distributed more evenly. Given Sandwich Blitz past successes, Dalman’s knowledge of business operation can be passed to each team member so they better understand why things are done a certain way. In passing this knowledge, doing so could spark interest in team members to develop better processes since they have a better understanding of how the business should look. With everyone on the same sheet of music, all the little issues that Dalman has been tending to could potentially be eliminated with the occasional larger issue that requires his expertise.…

I feel a team would help Dalman accomplish his goals in having more time with the business. Dalman spends all his time with Lei to try and keep the business up and running along with the franchise that he does not have time to do everything. This is why a self-managed team will help them both run the business. By using a team Dalman can allow his team to work on many projects to digitally enhance and help make his company perform better. The team can also oversee, while helping building different franchises. While hiring a team Dalman and Lie can allow them to devote their time to the business more. The team can help with training managers. The team can also oversee financial matter along with other business issues that Dalman and Lei can’t juggle at the moment. Dalman can also use Project and Development teams to help work on long term projects in the company but use them to disband when they have reached their goal. Dalman and Lei can also use something called Parallel Teams. Parallel Teams teams can work from inside the structure to help build projects and help them move along because they could be a form of managers from inside the organization to help with there, financial issues or other issues they may be struggling to complete while having too much other stuff to handle in the organization. By using these forms of teams Dalman and Lei can use more time to help devote to the development and structural growth of their business. Dalman and Lei when they do not have time to head overseas to oversee the franchise growth of Sandwich Blitz they can use Virtual Teams to communicate electronically instead of face to face that way they don’t have to stop what they are doing and leave the country to have a meeting, when in fact they can set up a manager meeting and see them virtually face to face by web cam online. This also means that they now have Transnational Teams that spread to multiple countries.…

The story is called “The Sandwich Factory”. It’s about a man, who finds a work at a sandwich factory. Everyone has their own thing to do in the factory and go through the same routine every day. We only hear that they go to work, get locked in and go home again when they’re done. It’s why I’ve chosen to focus on the mechanization of human beings. It pretty much describes the world we are in today. Maybe a little too extreme but true in many ways. We, people go to work every day. Usually do some of the same things and then go home again. Many people go to work, to earn money, not because they like it. So does the guy in the story. He works with a mad kid, who shows up with a knife all the time, a woman described as a whore and a boss, who locks in the workers, if they are behind schedule and I don’t think any human would enjoy working there.…
