SAMSUNG VS APPLE-BATTLE OF THE GIANTS

Samsung and Apple are the two biggest smartphone companies with a combined market share of more than half the global smartphone market. Every year both the companies bring in new innovations in their smartphones, which greatly increases their smartphone sales. But in today’s market where there is cut throat competition it is given that each company will try to outdo the other in every possible manner. Hence I would like to discuss the fierce battle raging between these smartphone giants-Samsung and Apple. Apple created a boom in the smartphone market by launching the iPhone, which had more features and was the most advanced smartphone at that time. The company made a huge profit and Apple became a household favorite. But with the rise of competition and the growth of Asian giant –Samsung, Apple’s success was not to last forever. Samsung came up with the Samsung Galaxy S smartphone with identical features as that of the iPhone and slowly but steadily the sales of Samsung smartphones rose.

Over the years there have been many new versions of the Apple iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy smartphone series and to surpass each other both these companies have been guilty of imitating the technologies used in their smartphones and have also filed for various lawsuits against each other. Samsung has been accused by Apple of violating patents and: - 1) Copying their icon arrangement display pattern. 2) Accused of imitating the iconic iPhone’s shape which in official terms is called as “tradedress”(e.g. smartphones resemble the iPhone 3g and iPhone 3gs in shape). [One such example of tradedress is that Apple on conducting a survey with “BestBuy” found out that there were many people who returned the Samsung phones because they thought they were iPhones. This Apple accuses was Samsung’s strategy for increasing their smartphone sales against the iPhone and also to tempt buyers into buying Samsung phones which look identical to

One major similarity between the iPhone and Android phones is their shape. For example, all models of the iPhone have been similar in shape, which can be noted in their rectangular shape and rounded corners. This exact shape can also be seen in many of the Android phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy and HTC Evo. iPhones and Android phones have also been noted for their large touch screens occupying the majority of the front space of the phone, and their job in navigation in place of traditional buttons seen on non-smart phones. Though the trend of this rectangular shape, rounded corners, and large screen has lead to many disputes regarding who had originally designed the structure, manufacturers continue to use this as the basic structure for their smart phones.…

Othman Aldhfeeri 2/20/2013 English 091 Jordan Case/Effect Paragraph Apple makes among the best phones in the world. The iPhone is their flagship product and it outpaces sales among everything they offer. Apple is at the forefront of the newest technology. The iPhone uses the state-of-the-art designs, such as touch screens and aluminum casing. The main industrial designer, Jonathan Ives, is famous for his concept of how it should look, function, and feel. Ives is a world renowned designer and his input took the iPhone to a completely unseen place that smart phones had never seen before. Apple’s use of such a great designer demonstrates that they will spare no expense to making a great phone. Additionally, the processing units (dual core, ARM A6) that come in the iPhone are incredibly fast. They are always releasing the fastest phone, while other competitors only release faster units months after the newest iPhone release. This demonstrates that other companies are simply trying desperately hard to keep up with the iPhone. The iPhone is the most widely used and widely recognized phone in the world. Everyone I know uses an iPhone and everywhere I go, I see people carrying one. It’s so hard to believe that only 4 years ago, Blackberry dominated the market. Now if we examine every age group and every ethnicity, almost everyone has the iPhone. Children who have not yet reached high school and the elderly, as well as everyone in between seems to have an iPhone. Even back home in Kuwait, the iPhone is second to none in popularity. Its widespread reputation can be seen in Apple’s sales revenue, as it is the most profitable company in the world at the moment. The phones are reasonably also priced. Comparing the price of this phone to that of the next best competitor, the Samsung Galexy, the prices are almost the same. In fact, among all data-driven phones, the iPhone seems to have the most standard pricing in terms of what comes with a contract. So even on a level playing…

As soon as the iPhone was released, Samsung went to work tearing it apart and now claims that it “infringes on two of its standard patents and six feature patents”. Papers were filed and submitted on October 1, 2012 to the U.S. District Court of Northern California for review. Samsung is appealing to the court’s decision on the basis of that the jury was too fast in their decision by only taking one day for the verdict. The court date for the hearing is set for some time in 2014 and will come before the same judge as the first case between Apple and Samsung. If Samsung wins this case they may recoup some of their losses in the previous lawsuit, but this leaves many wondering if this is the beginning of a never ending battle between Apple and Samsung, as well as other major electronic companies who just want to sell their products.…

With smartphones having a multitude of similarities, how does a consumer know which one to buy? The major aspect a consumer looks for when picking a smartphone is quality. Quality is always present in good products, but that quality could be in the marketing techniques, not the actual product. Samsung and Apple are two major smartphone companies, and they both have similar marketing ideas. Samsung created the commercial “Graduation Party” to promote the Galaxy 8, and Apple created the commercial “Barber Shop” to promote the IPhone 7. Both commercials are trying to promote camera quality by using pathos, ethos, and logos. Both Apple and Samsung are strong in pathos and ethos, but Apple is weaker in logos than Samsung.…
