A Comparison Between Samsung and Nokia
Thinking Broadly about Innovation
Samsung is well known for its technological innovations, and Samsung Corning is no exception. The company, a joint venture between Samsung and Corning of the U.S., is a leader in core electronic materials and manufactures differentiated products for fl at panel displays.
We produce high-defi nition PDP fi lters, ITO targets and ultra-slim CRT glass, and are constantly developing next generation materials and components. These state-of-the-art products are only the most visible innovations.
Samsung Corning extends the art of innovation to how we make products, resulting in greater productivity and production that is faster and more cost competitive.
There is great synergy here. By producing ultraslim
CRT glass that is 30% thinner, we are offering customers a more attractive product that is lighter, less bulky, stylish and space effi cient. At the same time, Samsung Corning can reduce raw material and packaging costs.
“Innovation previously was more about technology,” says Lim Swee Ee. “Now, however, the focus has shifted toward how fast it can be developed. At Samsung Corning, we are emphasizing a Six Sigma mindset to drive productivity improvements. Also, we are shifting from manufacturing-oriented to businessoriented management.” These innovations are driven by our employees.
For example, in our polishing process, an expensive piece of equipment called a diamond wheel is used. By applying creative ideas and innovation to the process, Samsung Corning was able to adjust its equipment specifi cations to reduce diamond wheel usage by 25%.
Another example involved collecting unused monitors and TV sets and recycling them, which reduces material costs while decreasing waste and protecting the environment. “Our process area can be a source of many innovations if we can think outside the box,” says Mr. Lim. This is the mindset of all Samsung Corning employees.

    In the National Geographic magazine, there are two advertisements for similar cameras: a Nokia Lumia 1020 and a Nikon D800. Although both devices were made for the same purpose, they differ in at least three ways. The first difference between a Nokia camera and a Nikon camera is the appearance of each device. A Nikon D800 camera has a bulky rigged built to it giving it a hard to use vibe. The brand name is engraved in big white bold letters on the front of the camera. In contrary, a Noika Lumia 1020 gives an easier to use appearance because of its smooth touch screen display. Their company name is shown in small white letters on the back of the device for users to percevie. The second difference from both ads is the intended audience this advertisement intends to attract. In the Nikon ad there are more descriptive features that the camera has, therefore reaching out to a more mature audience. On the other hand, in the Nokia Lumia 1020 the ad is more testimonial rather than giving multiple features within the camera. The final difference between a Nokia Lumia 1020 and a Nikon D800 is the intended use. In the ad containing the Nikon camera, the ad is straight forward in giving specifics features advertising a higher quality camera for professional purposes. On the other hand the Nokia ad tries to persuade their audiences with testimonies rather than features. Even though the Nokia ad claims to “take photos like a pro” it’s meant to take high quality pictures for amateur reasons.…

The main point that can be inferred from the Case Study is that Corning has a high probability of having a competitive advantage in the innovation process, which translates in good R&D results. At the same time, it seems evident that Corning is able to create markets for its products, which usually lie in specialized niche market, difficult to be assaulted by low-cost manufacturers. Corning’s history also shows that the company has been nimble in leaving commoditized markets, pursuing premium opportunities created by its R&D department. The analysis tells us that Corning has a high probability of keeping creating innovations that translate into products and growth, there is no evidence that this is degrading and therefore in terms of strategy, strictly speaking, it is believed Corning is a healthy company.
