SAMPLE: SPEECH (SPM)

Good morning dear students. I am the President of the Science Club. I would like to warmly welcome all of you here. The reason that I stand here in front of all of you is because I would like to give a talk on a reference book that is useful for all secondary students. I am sure all of you use many different types of reference books for your studies. The reference book that I would like to talk about is a science book. First and foremost, allow me to introduce the title of the book. It is ‘Science Made Simple’. The author of this book is Sharifah Shazana and the publisher is Bunga Publications. Sharifah Shazana is a well-known author for science books. Her books are widely used not only in Malaysia but also in many other countries worldwide. So, there is no doubt that this book is a good book for reference usage. There are many reasons why this book is useful for secondary school students. The first reason is its attractive presentation. The cover of the book itself is so attractive that the moment we see it, our eyes will be glued onto the cover. Apart from the cover, the contents of the book are also presented in a very attractive manner – colorful and with the usage of different type of fonts and sizes. The next reason is clear explanation. Students can easily understand the notes given in the book. Each topic is explained in details and keywords have been given to enable students to remember important facts. The explanations are simplified that even the weaker students should be able to understand well. Other than that, this reference book is also useful because of the various helpful diagrams provided by the author. The diagrams are colorful and clear that students will not get bored and can easily absorb the procedures explained by each diagram. I am sure this is what we will prefer to help us to master science subject without difficulty. In addition to the above reasons, this reference book is essential for every student

Introduction and How to Study Science: These sections include important information about general scientific subject matter and specific information about effectively studying science and conducting science experiments. Read these sections carefully and take them to heart! How to Perform an Experiment and Laboratory Equipment and Techniques: Adhering to the procedures described in these sections will greatly facilitate experimental activities. The laboratory techniques and equipment described primarily apply to full-scale experiments and formal laboratories; however, knowledge of these items is important to a basic understanding of science and is relevant to home-based experimentation. How to Write Lab Notes and Lab Reports: Like all serious scientists, you must record formal notes detailing your activities, observations, and findings for each experiment. These notes will reinforce your learning experiences and science knowledge and provide the basis from which you will prepare Lab Reports for your instructor. This section explains how these documents should be organized and prepared. Safety Concerns: The Basic Safety Guidelines and Safety Reinforcement Agreement are the most important sections of this lab manual and should be reviewed before each experiment. The safety sections are relevant to both laboratory and…

In the article “Put a Little Science in Your Life” the author, Brian Greene, expresses how science is such a magnificent study, but yet is not catching the attention of youth today. In today’s education system students aren’t looking at science in the big picture, but are merely looking at it as another course they are required to pass. Greene expresses to his reader’s that science is everywhere, and that everything created is somewhat made up of science. In the school room, teachers are given an agenda to follow and told to stick to that agenda. This agenda does not catch the interest of all, or any of the student’s in which they leave the class with a cold and/or dull feeling towards science. Greene expresses to his readers that Science is…

So that it‘s very easy to hear what is indicated in the book. But sometimes it‘s not a very effective way to learn something. Actually, we don’t have many books like that most of the books required for my study is a textbook. When I first read a new textbook, I often take a look over the cover page, a quick look on some pages, and the list of chapters including in the book. I really interested in images, and what is the most attractive to my eyes. After that with a sample lesson, at first I read the title, and the topic sentences of each section to catch up the main idea of the lesson. Then I keep going to find out what is indicated in each section. I pay more attention to what is typed in Italic or Bold font or in the square noticed. If I had something which is difficult to understand, I would underline it, and continue to read the next one. I will move back to solve this problem at the end of each section or ask for the help on internet or from other…

Therefore, the ability to acquire and understand science is necessary and important, which is called scientific literacy. In my paper, I would like to talk about why scientific literacy is important for us to survive in contemporary society and in making decision in real work. Therefore, I think everyone within present era should have the ability to understand and acquire science knowledge. Also, when solving problems, we should think in scientific way and then solve the problem. As a result, the audience of my paper is all people, since I think scientific literacy should be equipped with everyone.…

    Organization of Study Time

The examinations are looming large. Suddenly you realise that you do need your notes and experimental work from the last year or two. Are they in good shape? Well...! It is worth remembering that revision is just that. It shouldn’t be the first time that you have tried to get to grips with a subject. Organisation of study habits over a whole course is a vital part of being successful. This certainly means practical things, such as making sure that your notes are intact and readable. But it also includes making sure that you have understood the ideas and connections as you have covered a topic. Nothing can be worse than trying to learn masses of material that you don’t understand. The best preparation for an examination begins a long time before it! This spreads the load and lessens the tension as the examination approaches. Figure 1 summarises various aspects of preparing for examinations. The coursework ‘arm’ emphasises not only the collection of good notes directly from class, but also the need to look at and use material from outside. Reading reference material and taking useful notes from it is a skill in itself. Table 1 outlines different methods of reading and their purpose. The first three methods are more appropriate to using books for reference. However, there is an increasing number of popular science books and magazines for which the last two methods are appropriate. In addition, there is an increasing amount of reference material now available on CD-ROM and, most significantly, the internet. You should find ways of using this material, as it provides a more interactive presentation of the material. The ability to make notes and topic summaries as you work…
