The activation energy obtained in Part C, 138.6 kJ/mol is not too far below the theoretical activation energy of 148.526 kJ/mol[6], while Part A confirms the theory that k is dependent on the initial concentration of reactants, since it is a first order reaction. This is clearly depicted in Figure 3, where the alteration of the amount of t-butyl chloride being added to the reaction vessel clearly produced a different rate constant. The findings from Part B of the experiment proved that the reaction followed the SN1 mechanism, with the increased concentration of water in the water/acetone mixture causing the reaction rate to increase due to the usage of polar solvents to stabilize the carbocation being produced during this mechanism in the slow, rate-determining step [5]. However, there were errors in the experiment, which led to the results being slightly off from theory, such as the lower than expected value for the activation…

The purpose of this experiment was to find the boiling point of an unknown solution in order to find its identity from the chart of substances. Also the unknown substance was compared to distilled water on viscosity and on surface tension. The unknown solution letter was D and 25 ml were obtained in a 50 ml graduated cylinder. We also obtained 25 ml of distilled water in a 50 ml graduated cylinder. The unknown solution’s viscosity and surface tension were compared to those of the distilled water, and the unknown solution scored lower in both categories compared to distilled water. The initial temperature of the unknown solution was 22.2 degrees Celsius. The boiling point of the unknown solution in the first trial was 82.3 C; second trial was 80.3 C and third was 84 C. These boiling points could not be exact measurements because the measurements were not completely accurate to one another, and the solution is not 100% pure. Isopropyl alcohol is the unknown according to the results. The percentage yield of the experiment was 102.34% and the percent error was .06. Boiling point is the temperature in which the vapor pressure of a liquid becomes equal to atmospheric pressure; this is the reaction that Isopropyl alcohol had in this experiment. The most volatile solution is pentane because it has a higher vapor pressure of 525.0 mmHg and the lowest volatile solution is Isopropyl alcohol because it has the lowest vapor pressure. Acetone has the lowest boiling point. Isopropyl alcohol started splashing before the water started boiling and this is the reason to conclude Isopropyl was the unknown…

I read The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain and enjoyed reading about a wealthy prince name Edward Tudor and a pauper name Tom Canty trading lives with each other and experiencing how it is like to live a life that is totally opposite from what they are used to. It really made me depressed to read the part, “Drunkenness, riot and brawling were the order, there, every night and nearly all night long. Broken heads were as common as hunger in that place. Yet little Tom was not unhappy. He had a hard time of it, but did not know it. It was the sort of time that all the Offal Court boys had, therefore he supposed it was the correct and comfortable thing. When he came home empty-handed at night, he knew his father would curse him and thrash him first, and that when he was done the awful grandmother would do it all over again and improve on it; and that away in the night his starving mother would slip to him stealthily with any miserable scrap or crust she had been able to save for him by going hungry herself, notwithstanding she was often caught in that sort of treason and soundly beaten for it by her husband.” No child should have to go through that sort of violence and abuse, and most children who do usually ends up becoming traumatized and disturbed. After reading that part, it made me want to jump into the book and take Tom away from that horrid place. However, it was interesting to read about how despite the environment Tom was brought up in, Tom was still happy with his life. This made me think, “How could you be happy with a life where your family abuses you and you’re forced to beg on the streets all day?!” Tom even managed to obtain a proper education in his hometown since Father Andrew would always teach Tom “the right ways” and how to read and write in Latin. The part, “His head grew to be full of these wonderful things, and many a night as he lay in the dark on his scant and offensive straw,…

In today’s media world, we have the ability to access innumerable amounts of information. Such accessibility provides a positive impact on our lives, but at the same time leaves us vulnerable in conforming to information that is not trustworthy and false. We must not be passive when we are subjected to the various types of media, we must be active. Meaning we must analyze the information at hand and use our reason to come to a conclusion as to whether or not the information is factual. As I began reading Chapter 1 in Mediactive by Dan Gillmor, I was presented with an email that informed me of a discussion between Lt. Col. Oliver North and senator Al Gore. I found myself in acceptance with the information the email provided. I was so intrigued over the fact that Osama Bin Laden had been a threat to Americans since 1987. As I continued reading the material I came to find out that the email was just a form of propaganda. I was so surprised when I found out this email was fiction, and must not trust any information unless it’s backed up by a verifiable source. This made me think back to when I was in my good old Middle School days. I would trust information presented to me by my friends, never questioning if the information was trustworthy or not. Since there is an abundance of information present in the world, as I previously noted, we must be active participants in order to manage this abundance of information. It is also important to make informed judgments when subjected to information overflow. One must question whether or not the information derived from the specific media at hand is trustworthy. I found it interesting that “it has taken millennia for humanity to produce democratized media.” The fact that the moveable type and printing press, way back when, is where this all started intrigues me. I never would have thought to look at those inventions as the first profound democratization of media.…

While I was reading the article Stressing the Group; Social Identity and the Unfolding Dynamics of Responses to Stress (Haslam & Reicher) and based on Hypothesis 1 and 2 referred in the article, I was led to an interesting perspective. Based on the hypothesis, we would expect that resistance would increase the low-status group sense of shared group identity and also willingness to challenge the high-status group power. That could create a shield against stressors! Simultaneously, it would “shake” the high-status group sense of shared group identity, causing stress and uncertainty amongst its members. Behind this hypothesis the reason that often powerless groups win battles against powerful states may be located. Now, imagine a war between two states: A powerful state with numerical, strategic and economic advantage, against a weak and helpless state. It is an unequal battle, which would be particularly interesting, if after strong resistance from the side of the powerless state, we measured the extent to which the two states were exposed to stressors. We would reasonably expect that as weak state members’ sense of shared identity increased, they would provide each other with more social support and would…

Diosdado Macapagal was born on September 28, 1910, in Lubao, Pampanga, the second of four children in a poor family.[1] His father, Urbano Macapagal, was a poet who wrote in the local Pampangan language, and his mother, Romana Pangan Macapagal, was a schoolteacher who taught catechism.[2] He is a distant descendant of Don Juan Macapagal, a prince of Tondo, who was a great-grandson of the last reigning Rajah of Selurong, Rajah Lakandula.[3] The family earned extra income by raising pigs and accommodating boarders in their home.[2] Due to his roots in poverty, Macapagal would later become affectionately known as the "Poor boy from Lubao".[4] Diosdado Macapagal was also a reputed poet in the Spanish language although his poet work was eclipsed by his political biography.…
