The rent had been pass due for months, but she kept it all to herself trying to protect us. At the age of 16 I was homeless and felt like an orphan. My siblings and I lived with friends, which is where we stayed for the next year. The month of September felt like the worst month of my life and it lasted even longer. Of course, our father was nowhere to be found and too busy self-medicating to care. After several days we would go and visit my mom at the behavioral center. We would go a lot more often than I wanted with everything that had happened. It seems like a horrible thing to say or feel, but when we were evicted, I had the responsibility of packing and cleaning. Almost all of our pets had been given away except for two and they lived in a cage outside someone’s house. I can’t even remember the day a bunch of people came to help move our things to several different storage places. The stress of that was so intense, I must have blocked it out of my…

The problem at hand for me was the necessity to purchase my own home. In 2002 I was renting a home in a small city with my husband and son living there as well. The house was also shared with my Mother-in-Law, and it was too small for all four of us to share. My husband and I realized after a short period of time that this living situation was not going to work out and that we should start looking for a place of our own. Since I am an animal lover and was the owner of one horse and one dog at that time, finding a home that also had a small amount of acreage was also necessary to accommodate us all.…

As a child I have always wanted to help other people. When I was 8 my parents decided to separate. At the time, my mother decided to move my sister and I away from Chicago. My mother packed our luggage and decided to move us to Detroit. That wasnt the only time we moved, we moved four times while I was growing up, all over the country and even to another continent. Eventually we had to leave our mom in Nigeria and my sister and I went to Detroit. When we got to Detroit my aunt didn't hesitate to make us feel comfortable. It was just something about it,I still didn't feel right. I called my mother one day crying to her and explaining how we didn't like being there. After talking to her, I felt that it was time to go back to Chicago. I called my dad, (knowing I haven’t spoke/seen him for many years) and explained to him the situation on how we felt uncomfortable in Detroit.…

    Dear Ben,

Hey Ben! I was talking with Sean yesterday when he told me the news, you're planning to delay college. This came as a shock to me when I heard it. By not attending college, you may get a year's rest and a chance to think your decisions through, but if you ever do decide to attend college, you will miss out on a lot of opportunities as well. My family was never a rich family to begin with. My father, mother, and I migrated from Dominican Republic in 1998, following my father’s side of the family to create a better life for themselves and their kids in the near or far future. Like most families who’ve come to a new country without a dime, my parents tried to get jobs to get us an apartment just for ourselves. The struggle they had gone through to get to where I am today is unbelievable, and I am so grateful for everything they have done. During my life, my parents have had to go though some hardships with the downpour of the economy after 9/11, to my dad getting sick and not being able to work for a couple of months.…

My father was deployed to Afghanistan for eight months and my mom and I really struggled during that time. I remember the times before deployment being very hard. My parents had a lot of arguments and my dad spent less time home than ever. When my dad finally deployed it took a lot of adjusting for my mom and I. It was definitely harder on my mom to pay the bills because she had to be home to go to school and take care of my sister and I. My father's deployment definitely took a toll on my mom but we were lucky enough to have people so willing to help. Some of my dads friends would help my mom by babysitting or coming over to help make dinner or clean. It honestly made life without my dad much easier. People need to understand that even the slightest bit of help could go a long way. I remember for christmas my mom couldn't really afford christmas presents but some of her friends pitched in and helped her buy so many christmas…
